Why is it so hard to find a bee hive when you can see where the bees are entering?

Tell me truthfully, were you shocked to see a notification of a Mr. Ed wrangling adventure on a Thursday? Bee honest. Well, there's good reason for the occasion. Because this is my 300th video I have posted on TH-cam, I wanted to do something different to celebrate, and I thought, what better way to celebrate than to surprise the good folks that have been following me for so long by changing the normal day of posting to a different day. But the surprise does not end there. Not only am I posting this video on a Thursday, but for the next 3 week, every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, I will be posting a new, though not currently dated, video for your viewing enjoyment. Hopefully, this won't be to much Mr. Ed to quickly, and I hope you will think of it as an early Christmas present from me to you. I can not express my gratitude to all of the more than 55,000 subscribers and the dedication you have to my channel. I hope you will enjoy my gift to you, and please understand if I can not reply to all your comments due to the number of them in such a short period of time.
Now, to this video. As promised to many in my response to last weeks video " Look what's under Grandma's kitchen cabinet," this weeks video is the full length version of the trailer video. On this adventure, you will meet one of the seminarians from St. Joseph Abbey Seminary College, Jessie, who was instrumental in assisting me with this relocation/removal, he was a tremendous help. You will also witness the nasty conditions that many bee wranglers endure to save bees from being destroyed, and the hard work that is required to achieve the rescue. I will say this, when the day was done, and the bees were safely at the abbey, I was happy to have done the job.
Now, you may need to pause the video and refill your cup of coffee or tea due to the length of this one, but I hope you will find it worth the watch. Till Monday, God's peace to all! Mr. Ed

Do you mean individual combs - the hexagonal cells, or the combs lying parallel to one another and filling space?
In the first case, the bees actually build circular cells, then as they are pressed together, they become hexagonal - a hexagon being the best way to completely tile a plane with minimal wall material. It's a lot like why bubbles take the shapes that they do as more and more join together.
For the combs, it's a growth process. They start out building sheets of comb that are close enough for a bee to climb directly from one to the next. If it doesn't touch a wall or the floor of the cavity, it will be roughly parabolic in shape. Assuming it does touch, they eventually will connect the comb to walls and floor but leave gaps for bees to travel past a sheet of comb. The combs grow and take up space. After a longish sheet of comb, sometimes they will start the next row in two places. These can wind up being joined into a single sheet or sometimes one will stop and the other will bend, then extend past the first. (This is what happened with the comb shown at 5:09.)

I would love to set up a hive in my own backyard, but sadly, city and community regulations prevent me from doing so (can't really blame them, I live across the street from an elementary school, the parents don't like the idea). Oh well. Even so, I try to be as supportive of beekeepers as possible, and am constantly on the lookout for a chance to spread the word of the endangerment of bees and just how important they are to us. wow! That is simply AMAZING to see. I've always been fascinated by honey bees. As a child a family friend had a honey bee hive in their house. We could watch them come and go through a tube into the hive, but you couldn't actually see the whole thing exposed like this. To see such a HUGE honey comb completely intact and compacted into that flat area is amazing. The construction is truly "organized chaos". You can see the basic "rules" the bees maintain during construction but it sill has that "random fractal" design. How do those individual bees stay organized as a group to maintain those precise clear "paths" through every area of the hive? It's amazing.

This is fascinating! I’ve never heard of ‘bee wrangling’ and did not know bees would make homes in man made structures, other than bee hives. As a child we used to catch bees in a jar with lid and let them go. I can only imagine what stories they would tell. After not having seen a honey bee for more than a decade I saw one recently. I live in eastern NC, USA where we have a relatively warm climate year round- a place that was abundant with bees ‘in the old days.’ I’m so glad they’re people Ike you helping the bees to make a comeback while reaping the rewards of both your hard labor and the bees. Sweet!

I was able to frame up two comb strips into every one of 15 frames. But, the restricted area made it impossible for me to find the queen. It certainly does. I post these videos, to show just how important bees are to our very survival, and why we should not just kill them out of ignorance. I have been rescuing bees from being needlessly destroyed for over 6 years now, and hope to continue to do so for many more years to come. Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my bee wrangling/ bee rescues adventures and let me know what you think of them. By the way, I post a new video every Friday morning, and I look forward to hearing from you again soon. God's peace.
