The ladies ballgown example with the tartan panel down the front on the thumbnail is lovely, and inspired a solution to a problem I was having.
I am to be in a parade at the end of this month honoring the first of my family members to arrive in my town, and that branch of my tree is Scots-Irish.
I will be making myself a Houston tartan sash with a pin to be worn over a basic casual floor-length maxi-dress of dark green which I already own.
I also wanted to incorporate my great-grandmother's family tartan (Hall) somehow, so adding a contrasting panel down the front is a great idea. The Hall tartan already has a dark green background, so it will blend well.
Instead of altering the dress itself I will be making an 18th century inspired apron to hang down the front instead out of the tartan fabric.
Thank you for your excellent information, your channel has already helped me on more than one occasion!
    💜

As the husband of a scots-irish American woman, I have been adopted into wearing the Baird kilt, but I have felt bad for her feeling limited in wearing the tartan (or so it seems). This video is very helpful for getting the ideas going since so much info out there has been purely male centric!

Super helpful! Thanks for providing images - this was the MOST helpful for me to see what the items are as you said their names.

When I was in high school in the 60’s, girls wore knee-length kilts to school, full-on male type kilts. With an oxford cloth shirt, a cardigan sweater and knee socks on one of the colors from the kilt

I very much liked the 3:13 and 4:13 pieces of designer art. Plus the Tartan blazer toward the end of this video. 🙏✨

It's a bit trickier out here in California. These festivals are in our hottest season so wool is a no go. It's been difficult to find a light weight ANYTHING in MacDonald tartan. I did find, this kerchief styled hybrid thingy. Air circulating. Close enough to MacDonald. It has pockets hidden in the folds and pleats. A t shirt and high boots will do.

Ladies just got a remember that when wearing a sash, 99% of all women would wear it over the right shoulder across the breast. This is not an “ you do you“ situation. The only person authorized to wear a sash over the left shoulder is the wife of a clan chief, wife of a colonel of certain Scottish regiments. This is not a fashion issue but an issue of propriety, honor and position. I’ve seen a lot of pictures of women wearing their sash over the left shoulder. If you’re not the wife of a clan chief, clan chieftain or colonel of a Scottish regiment, do you wear it over the right shoulder. Because Wearing over the other shoulder is an honor reserved for very specific people. Not just anybody.

There is one other US Navy affiliated tartan: the Polaris Military tartan. It originally was made for submariners and base personnel at Subase Holy Loch, but the US Naval Academy Piper band has adopted it as well, and I am getting it, as veteran Submariner.

Maybe something like the midevil style overdress I’ve seen at sca events but it’s more daily wear

Back in the 60’s in the South, high school girls wore mid-knee deeply pleated kilts ‘men’s style’ kilts.

Is there a specific guideline of what to wear with a kilted skirt? I.E. Shirt, shoes, accessories, etc?

Where would you rank the earasaid on formal to informal?

So what makes a kilted skirt 'kilted'? Is it the pleats in the back? The buckles at the waist? does kilted mean the same in men and women kilts or skirts? Are they only for those with a scottish heritage only wearing the tartan plaid of their clan?

Just wear what you like. Just do it with respect, and don't make it look like a costume.
