    Pretty does not win races. I really hate the racing Industry. So many good horses ruined or thrown away. But every time I read a book about sea biscuit, or watch a movie, or a race reel or this jam packed bio. I swell to bursting and cry like a baby. Such a beautiful spirit!

      Gary Daniel Thanks Gary. I had horses for 34 years and helped with many discarded race horses unwitting beginner owners got for free or cheap and were terrified of them. After a while they love bei g hobby horses. But there are so many due to large scale breeding to hopefully get that special one . Many get neglected or culled and pulling goals off mates in order to breed them back leaves orphans in the nurse mare industry that need rescue. It breaks the heart. broken body keepd me from it now. And I have no patience for rough ignorant horse people.

      These creatures have characters and ambitions of their own, it's just a different competitive field. Horses race each other, it's the game they like to play. All animals have their own games to entertain themselves and spur on competition, it's a central construct of social evolution in animal species.

    every discretion of seabiscuit reminds me of my horse Joe. he was too tall for his skinny legs and big hooves, too calm and lazy for his breeding ... we got him as a pawn off gift. best horse I've ever had, smart, gentle, strong and stout. he died this year, I cried, my children cried, my nieces and nefews cried, my parents cried every person who ever rode him cried he was beautiful, the perfect horse for children, so many kids in my family have learned to ride on this horse ... he was so gentle and kind he had that baby colt face all his life even at 28 he had that baby face and he was beautiful and loved! rip Joe, there will never be another like you in my lifetime.
    he was a thorough breed and quarter horse, in winter he looked like a wholy mammoth, tons of hair to comb off during summer yet he was always strong and smart

      Pym quarter horse Snoopy Breeze was pretty much like your horse. He had been bred for barrel racing but he didn't like it so he was up or sale for trail riding. At 18 he still loved the little girls who liked to use him for show. He had a mind of his own, he would put up with adults who rode him if they were kind to him. Once during a rainy spell a good friend asked if she could take him into ring. He was fine walking but when she tried to take him from a canterto gallop he would not change his gait so she did something she had never done before. . . Used her whip and as I was watching I would swear the look in eyes see med to be saying I said NO! And I'll show YOU. Where upon he proceeded gently lean back on his hunches into the mud. The owner of the stable was coming through the barn and I told her what he had done. Sharon said horses are to dumb to do something like that he probably slipped. To make her point she got in the saddle to take him through the mud and darned if he didn't try to say NO! Again. She gained a new respect for him. I read somewhere that Seabisquit didn't like mud either. By the way if any one else reads this message just to seer Seabisquit influence go to TH-cam and see the Warner Bros cartoon featuring Porky Pig and TEA BISQUIT.

    • @deemariedubois4916
      @deemariedubois4916 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Upcycle Electronics I agree. Good video, Sea Biscuit was an amazing horse, but the treatment of thorough bred horses that don't make the grade is abominable. And those that do make the grade can be treated just as badly or at times even worse. A pretend 'sport' based on gambling is always going to attract the lowest of the low of supposed 'human beings' who look upon the sensitive horse as just a THING to use make money caring nothing about the individual horse or the heinous practices of the racing horse industry. Don't kid yourself that the industry has been cleaned up for it is just as bad today as it has always been. There are plenty of videos available if any one is interested in seeing the real treatment of these amazing animals, drugged, hit, beaten, and killed with a shot or bolt to the head when they don't show promise or win. Finding rescues home for abandoned thoroughbreds is a challenge with the number of horses needing a forever home far out numbering the homes available.

      As someone from Louisville who's grown up with the Kentucky Derby every year, I can't stand it. This image they put out of class and competition is just a bs facade for rich people to throw their money around competing with each other using the horses as their playthings. And they're often treated horribly. I hope the industry dies painfully for everyone involved except.the horses and those that at least tried to be decent to the animals.

    I've said it before and I'll say it again. Simon is one of the most interesting and compelling narrator / commentator on TH-cam at this time. even when I'm not that interested in the subject he's discussing I find myself listening to the end. I have a very short attention span so it takes someone with personality to hook me. Even when I'm interested in a subject I find myself fading away in terms of listening because the narrator / commentator is so effing boring. I'm pretty sure he's not passionate about all of the subjects of biographics but he comes off as being totally fascinated about what he's discussing. That is quite a talent. I doff my cap to you Simon. in a world where too much information is thrown at us, you are an oasis in the desert. Thank you for sharing your numerous talents with us. I for one am grateful. If you can't tell by now that I adore you let me make it clear. I adore you! 😘

    I think that it was Seabiscuit they found out after his death that he had a large heart, much larger than normal. Probably the reason why he had a heart attack but also the reason why he was so fast, his heart was able to pump more of his blood and his personality and training helped too to make the heart stronger and able to push more out of his body than a "normal" horse. Fascinating!

    This was a great episode! I remember enjoying the movie when it came out too; but around 2-3 years ago, I came across a used paperback copy of the book and it was better, by far. Without the time constraints of a movie, it gives much greater character detail (such as their pasts) for the owner, trainer and jockey. It also gives a detailed history of how badly Seabiscuit was treated by his previous owner by being dangerously over raced in small money races across the country without any rest and recovery time between towns.

    • @kasession
      @kasession 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you're talking about Laura Hillenbrand's book, I agree. I saw a documentary on her book, and then read the book before seeing the movie. I loved both the documentary and her book. The movie was eh.. I especially loved the jockey's story. If I remember correctly, he left home voluntarily with a caretaker at 13 (not 16, as the movie portrayed), so that he could pursue his career as a jockey. The caretaker abandoned him shortly thereafter. He chose NOT to go home, but continued to race wherever he could. It was not an easy life, but he persevered. Now THAT' was a tough man.

    One aspect of the War Admiral/Seabiscuit race was S'b's tactic of creeping up on rivals, looking them in the eye, and racing alongside pace for pace until he saw their tongue shoot out the side of their mouth--a horse's way of "crying uncle." Then he'd pound past the horse in question, having crushed its spirit.
    War Admiral, and Sam Riddle, were never the same again.

    Biographics As somebody who has been watching this channel pretty much on repeat to fall asleep I kindly request you create a playlist for all videos in addition to the ones you already have. This way I can stop waking up to crazy conspiracy theory documentaries after YT does its algorithmic magic. It's absolutely destroying my suggested feed. Thank you.

    Just realised...
    Man'O'War is a big ship.
    War Admirals command ships in battle
    Hard-Tack is a naval ration biscuit
    SeaBiscuit is another name for naval ration biscuits or Hard-Tack
    Horse genealogy name win!

    Wish I could have seen him race. He won my heart. I love the movie. Jeff Bridges was awesome, Chris Cooper a winner and Toby McGuire great jockey. I loved the movie. I love horses so this movie was brilliantly directed. ❤

    You have a very special talent to tell the stories of extraordinary lives and just wanted to thank you for your diligence and hard work ! You have a subscriber for life and I certainly hope that you keep up the good work ! Would it be possible to make a biography about Robert L Ripley " Believe it or not " !

    Great video! I loved the idea of focusing on an animal athlete. If you’re interested in making maybe another video or two, regarding animal athletes, might I suggest the famous show jumping horse Snowman, or any triple crown winner would be exciting to see.

    A great bio of a great horse. If you do another great horse horse bio I would like to see the story of one of the greatest race horses to ever come out of Australia a horse called Pha Lap. He was the equil if not the better of any horse from the USA at the time and a great story the big red fella ran in the US only 2 or 3 times before he died his body was shipped back home and the streets where lined with morrners almost like he was a head of state. He put food on the table of many unemployed families through ileagle off track betting and is a Australian racing hero. Keep up the good work I look forward to future stories.

      @@kathrynhamblin2997 Well he was born in New Zealand, but they didn't want him. Everything Phar Lap ever wax came from Australia. If the Americans hadn't nobbled him he would have achieved much more.
