Just came across this video by chance. Previous console only player here, and from this console gamers perspective what happened to Elite: Dangerous on consoles is pretty unforgivable. We always felt like second class citizens as it was.
There's no excuse citing 'technical challenges' when the Series X/S and Playstation 5 exist - these are capable machines and I'm certain if that was the only way Elite could have continued on consoles the community would have accepted that.
If it has "Frontier Developments" on it now, by default I do not buy. I made an exception recently (first one in years) but I've certainly spent *a lot* less money if it has their name attched to it. Fool me once...

With how poorly the on foot stuff runs on even high end computers, I highly doubt they would have been capable of getting it running even remotely acceptably on Series X/PS5 Pro. They just don't have the talent anymore, and haven't for a while.

@@schrombomb They actually haven't fixed the on-foot performance for conflict zones but tagged it as "fixed". That's as far as "talent" FDev actually has.

Very upset that they just abandoned console players. They were happy to take our money when we bought and supported the game. Now they just leave us behind.. Will never buy another game from them again.

Console only player, I played first ED on amiga in early 90’s. Love the game and unique ideas and implementation. I was really mad that odyssey went so wrong and consoles got dumped, but I can understand the logic and reasoning behind the move. I still think plenty of console players would rein-gauge if they even threw us a few scraps from time to time. Forget trying to make odyssey work on console, just port in new ships and customisation items, update community events and you have a cheap way to grab a bit of cash for fdev, some people would bitch and moan but it would ultimately please some console players and make financial sense.

What about the new console generation. You think they will do anything with that?

  • @kessilrun6754
    @kessilrun6754 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Yep! Any time I take a long break, on PC, I have to re-bind everything. It's normal. Kind of like how in Star Citizen, every month I log in I have to re-design my character and re-map my controls. The only difference here is that one game is out and the other isn't. So you pretty much expect it with SC LOL. I miss when, on console, the updates informed you of which keys were unmapped that were "core functions." So, for the Horizons update, I had the game showing an exclamation mark near "Settings" and a notification stating that I had unmapped keys. Then when you open up the settings section, it would place a yellow exclamation next to the sections containing unmapped keys i.e. it never just outright deleted my bindings. It also seems like every time I remap, I manage to somehow set it up significantly worse than the last time lol, and I never find that perfect spot again.
The console versions hold back the PC development, sadly. When they incorporate a feature, they have to consider if it can be ran on the lower specs/ memory for the duration of that console. The problem here is that consoles can't be upgraded, so someone may be playing the same game, on the same console, for north of 10 years. So, when someone is now running 32GB of VRAM, on PC, as a standard, they now have to continue to consider the 8GB consoles, which limits what you can do with the game. Console games are "generation locked" and even games like Cyberpunk are feeling the pain because there is what they want to do with a game, and what you can do with the game. So, sure, Cyberpunk 2077 could be made to run on a PS4/ Xbox One original console, but with what they wanted to do with Phantom Liberty those consoles were absolutely out. Therefore, it's kind of like saying "Cyberpunk 2077 (core) is a last gen game, while Phantom Liberty/ 2.0 is a next gen game." In the PC realm there's no distinction necessarily, because you can just swap out a component or two to be "play worthy."
The console problem has a been a problem since like Xbox original and PS2: Developers had to struggle to figure out how to cram something like a 32 player map into a console's 16-32MB of memory, back when the PC spec for the game was something like 128MB. So devs would have to reduce object counts, reduce player counts, shadow counts, shadow resolution, vegetation/ tree counts, draw distance, add fogging and still have to make the maps smaller to boot...which was no small task. So what happens? PC loses its status as lead platform sometime around 2008 and developers find it's much easier to make console the lead platform and then just squeeze extra fidelity into these now tiny worlds. So now consoles have left their mark. The only people demonstrating what a PC can truly do anymore are Cloud Imperium Games and it's fascinating us all over again.

Battlefield was able to do it, and more on console,so there goes that argument !

    • @kessilrun6754
      @kessilrun6754 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@bloodwing9597 Oh yeah...I learned so much there. Yeah, let me just take your word for that.
Firstly, are you talking today Battlefield? As in, the past 10 years? If so, absolutely. 100 percent. That's because console has been lead platform for about that long now (in terms of "released by 2012/ 2013." Effectively, the decision was made way back in late 2008/ early 2009. That's why Crysis 2 was a thing. Even when Crysis 1 was finally released on the (then) current consoles, it was stripped down to do it. Namely, neutered physics.
And so, assuming you are talking pre-2012, do you mean map size to map size? Object count to object count? Physics to physics? vegetation coverage? Including trees? Player counts? ETC? If so? BS. "Battlefield is doing it" says absolutely nothing and could mean anything. So, yes, "There goes that (unaddressed) argument." Technically? Yes. If you're suggesting that, per, the constraints they had to work with, they sure as hell did do it. Even if the PC was pulling in something like 64 players in a Rush mode and console only 48 or 32 on reduced sized maps. That was a crowing achievement in my books. Still, that wouldn't prevent console plebs from crying, "S***ty ports" Anymore AMD can't even release a new generation chip, until it first inaugurates on a consoles first. Same with HDMI standards now too apparently.

I believe that Frontier put a lot of money and effort into the Odyssey first person shooter addition to ED for both PC and consoles. Which then blew-up in their faces with it's disastrous launch.
I'm presuming the Odyssey expansion didn't bring in the player numbers to support on-going console development, so Frontier decided to shutter the console versions.
Now they're just drip feeding the bare minimum out to PC players.
And with recent changes to the in-game economy, I'm wondering whether Frontier is now implementing planned decline in ED.

Yes, easy to understand, but not to share. And BTW, easy to understand from a money point of view, which is absurd because consoles means more players, means more money. And that's your other take: "you have to sacrifice some things to make other things better". Better? Like what? Because I haven't seen that ED has significally improved at anything. The game bleeds players constantly, and if they didn't throw a bone from time to time, in this case a new ship, in other cases some thargoid war BS, the game would be dead.
    -Broken promises
-Not listening to the gamers (customers)
    -Lack of communication (abscence of)
-Console players, with all the money and time they spent, thrown to the ditch
-Gaslight (Everybody wanted legs, no one wants ship interiors, etc)
-Banning players just for asking questions
-CM calling the players idiots (how quick we forget some things)
-A first person shooter that no one wanted, and a really really bad one.
-Stellar Froge abandoned forever, so forget about new system configurations or diversity. It won't happen. And don't talk about realism because it's not realistic. Every system is discovered, every body, is crazy and unique. Even in our solar system there are no 2 the same. Also, black holes in this game are a joke.
-No atmospheric planets, not even Venus-like. which would be extremely easy to implement.
-And now, pay to win (pre engineered ships you buy with real money)
If people still play the game is because how good the Horizons part was, and because ED is still unique, and really really good at what it's good at.
I am a console ED orphan, with about 4K hours, and the decision was extremely painful. I can't affor a PC, so I quit more than a year ago because there's no point on keep playing it. I've done everything, every mechanic, every build, every mission. But still, jumping into Odyssey is extremely uninteresting to me. I fell in love with the game, BECAUSE it wasn't a first person shooter. There are lots of good FPS out there if I wanted it. Legs were a meme in the community, but everybody wanted many other things before legs.
Yes, I understand the HR issue and the decision, from a multi FKG billion dollar company...

Good luck thinking elite is gone get big updates. Frontier is bleeding money like there's no tomorow. At this rate they'll be broke within the next couple of years. If there's gone be any updates it'll be microtransaction styled updates. Their promise to only sell cosmetics already went out the Window. I still play on my ps5 time to time and I feel the console would have easily run the game, sad they dropped it but from their financial perspective I can see why they did.

As a console player, I was upset, at first. Then I remembered the game wasn't that great and fdev certainly wasn't the best. I think the vast majority of console players were only playing the game because it was one of the few space sims on console. Outside of that, the game was actually pretty bad. The more I thought about it, the more I realized how much they failed to deliver, and I eventually deleted the game and moved on. Even if they decided to return to console, I don't think I would give them another chance.

I'm sorry for the players that were axed. But if it means the franchise can move forward, then I support the move.
Every effort was made to mitigate the situation -- which Frontier was under no obligation to offer. Precious time and effort were spent devising a workaround that many were in position to take advantage of, fortunately. The whole affair nearly brought down the entire operation, Frontier having to dismiss, and reassess the business model.
I was just watching a former console commander's stream where he was ecstatic to be back stuck in fresh with Odyssey taking his first real steps... He was glad he finally made the switch, so some are getting with the times -- swallowing their pride -- and getting back after it.
