Flatline Van Co Roof Rack for Ford Transit - Best Solar Mounting Option

  • I can't tell you how happy I am with my Flatline roof rack.
    I spent weeks to no avail trying to figure out the best option for working around the roof fan, working with the factory mounting points, trying not to drill into my van, maintaining the option for loading kayaks, skis, surfboard etc. on my roof...AND considering where and how my solar panels will fit. It was quite frustrating.
    Then came along Flatline Van Co's amazing rack (they carry racks for Promasters, Sprinters, and Transits).
    The rack is incredibly easy to install. It takes about 4-hours. They sell out quickly though so hop on that if it's available.

    You'll need:
    flathead screwdriver or something to work the covers off the factory mounting points.
    Alan wrench set (or one of those fancy screwdrivers that fit an alan wrench head)
    Crescent wrench and socket wrench set.
    And a load of patience!

    Hey Non-Aesthetic, did u use sealant around the Flatline rack feet where they bolt to the van? Any sealant on the bolt head, or around the base of each footing? Just curious if the black gasket they provide does the job well enough to keep water out? Cheers

      I did NOT use any sealant. When I was doing this project I tried to find some info online about people having issues and from the little I could find, no one had had any issues with leakage using just the rubber pad and the bolts with the little bit of rubber on the bottom of them. Seems to be tightly sealed!

      @@JeremiahLuke Thanks dude, i appreciate it. I'm going to leave it alone and hope that these torrential california rain squalls don't leak into my ride;)

    Great video! So when you pry off the circular access points, there are screw holes underneath? Did you think about putting a little silicone into the screw hole before putting on the sealer patch and mount just for extra protection? We’re learning so much! You’re my hero!

    • @JeremiahLuke
      @JeremiahLuke  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes...except make sure are prying caps off the correct holes! It is pretty obvious in the case of installing the FVC rack because the feet and rubber pads match the outline on the roof where you should remove the caps. I have thought about sealing around the mount but from what I've read, no one has had any trouble with leaking around the FVC mount yet given it is tightly sealed and ringed in rubber but a little Through the Roof clear sealant wouldn't hurt :)

    What are the measurements, I looked at their web site and it does not seem to have how high the rack is. It looks from your closeups to add 6" to your van height?

    • @JeremiahLuke
      @JeremiahLuke  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, Michael - It adds just about 7" - I have been super happy with the sleek look as far as blending with the van rather than seeming like a giant rack on top. I think the solid rather than perforated sides play to that image well. I also stuck my solar shower UNDER the cross bars and the panels only sit about 1/8" above the rack so all in all sits really flush with the van and I love it.

    Going to refer back to this video, when I get mine. Just wondering, I want to install an overhead light bar, is it even worth getting the front wind fairing?

    • @JeremiahLuke
      @JeremiahLuke  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a good question. I ended up getting a bigger fairing from Colorado Fairing Co (th-cam.com/video/8VlGlBXA_4w/w-d-xo.html) instead of the FVC smaller one and I don't think either is compatible with a light bar...my friend Richbuilt (th-cam.com/users/okkimane) installed a light bar on his FVC rack but without any fairing I believe. It may be that it is just a choice between the two things.

    • @tiny11231
      @tiny11231 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JeremiahLuke The bigger fairing looks awesome, looks like the light bar won’t work with that Colorado fairing. What did you do with the flatline fairing?

      SweetTimes! It may be too late, but I just found out Colorado Fairing CO (the fairing I now have on my FVC rack) is making transparent fairings specifically designed for the inclusion of a light bar...! instagram.com/p/CKCS7Bmnynl/
