- In this Sonata no. 3, performed by Shunske Sato for All of Bach, Bach appears to have been looking to Italy for inspiration. The mysterious first Adagio, for instance, seems just like the opening of the Adagio of the oboe concerto by Marcello. The monumental Fugue in this sonata is full of contrapuntal tricks. Although not exactly Italian, it has no German equivalent either.

I cannot think of another composer who literally wrote the essential 'book' for so many instruments. Every violinist will study all the sonatas and partitas for life, all pianist will always study the well tuned clavier (I&II) and 2&3 part inventions, and all organist will study the fuges and chorales. It is insane what was in this composer's mind.

My personal prize of number one in the rankings of best violin interpreter of Bach has now officially passed from Hillary Hahn to Shunske Sato. Hahn's interpretations and loving and firm. Sato's are playful and effortless, like a tiny gymnast on the parallel bars flitting and flipping naturally without a single hesitation,
Hiliary plays perfectly, Sato with full emotion, and Ithzak plays with power
I know no other violinist who is listening to the sound of his violon expressing the music that was written down by Bach, as Shunske Sato is capable of. He really brings it home to the soul of it all. That is such a gift.
As a violinist, I have nothing to say about this marvelous interpretaion. Just my big, big respect to Mr. Shunske. Bravo
The way Sato interprets Bach shows us the close connection between speech and music. Bach went to a school in which he were taught rhetoric. Sato´s phrasing makes the harmonics talk and the line of melody realize a profound prosodic. If we want, we can also understand from where language came. OFK
Not feeling well, on the couch with my eyes closed, hearing this video, hearing the adagio, thinking: he might have played that when one of his children just had died, feeling immensely sad. And then the other movements: powerfull, hopefull, vigerous, difficult to play! Hé Bach, you are not playing on your cembalo here!

I love way Sato plays the Prelude (Adagio) where the triple and 4stops are so hard to get good in pitch, and the bow must emphasize the leading voice. When I heard this BWV 1005 first time with Grumiaux I thought "wonderfully played", with Sato I think: "OK, so there is really beautiful music in here!."
I've fallen in love with the tone of this violin and Mr. Sato's approach and interpretation. Very faithful to what Bach himself would have had mind when he composed the piece...
Also Arthur Grumiaux plays all Bach with a beautiful tone. HOWever, Grumiaux plays with a modern bow and a "modern violin technique", which allows him more volume, but the double stops need more "attacca" in order for the bow to grip three (and worse, four) strings and thereby sometimes create a stop/begin effect, where Sato is able to get a more even flow. Just my 25 cents. I love both violinists.
Mr Sato take this to another level, yet again, in his performance. A complete revelation.

Fehlerlose und wunderschöne Aufführung dieser technisch anspruchsvollen und perfekt komponierten Sonate im gut phrasierten Tempo mit seidigem doch gut artikuliertem Ton der Solovioline und mit sorgfältig kontrollierter Dynamik. Die traumhaft schönen Doppelgriffe klingen fast außerirdisch. Was für ein genialer Violinist!

Bach is an impossibility. Can someone compose music which, by all means, is timeless in the sense that every listener doubts it was written centuries ago? Can someone compose concertos, sinfonias, sonatas, cantatas, masses and passions, pieces for choral and organ, chamber music, string quartets and music for every instrument in existence in such a way that all of such compositions became the landmarks by which every other composer would be measured from that moment on? Can someone possibly talk about Fugues and not include a deep analysis of the works by Bach? Who would think of a composer being imprisoned for a month so that he would not leave his assignment as a musical director for one of those European princes? Who could possibly be a master composer and write sublime music in such quantities and diversity, some of such compositions in a new tuning procedure, and still have time to compose for one of the most difficult instruments ever invented (the organ)? Who can possibly write one sonata a month or one cantata every week for several years in a row? For all these reasons, the existence of such a composer is not possible. And so Bach is an impossibility...
And yet, your comment is a monument to Bach!

agree, but - if i remember right - he wrote 2(!) cantatas for every sunday over several years, and after the first performance of the monumental st.matthew`s passion his bosses reduce his income. how sick was that?!

Although you do realise. This is a different pitch to the standard baroque pitch 415 Hertz I think it’s French court pitch I don’t know but all I know this is lower than the standard of 415 hertz

@@henrykwieniawski7233 I may or may not have perfect pitch, but the Netherlands Bach Society commented somewhere else as to what the tuning was. @@nickyork8901 I practiced for a year to get the allegro assai right, but it still sounds "meh" compared to Hilary Hahn. The rest of the piece was amazing, but the allegro assai of this specific piece is one of the most difficult in violin repertoire. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying he's bad, he's amazing.

A obra de Bach é inigualavelmente pungente, ela consegue penetrar o mais profundo de nossas emoções e fazer-nos sentir coisas antes não sentidas, consegue fazer-nos sentir à vez luto e alegria, tristeza e felicidade. Na sua época, os pintores com pincel e tinta pintavam a natureza e o mundo circundante, mas Bach pintou o universo com a música.

As an amateur I’ve tried to play the fugue, my favorite perhaps of all the violin sonatas and partitas. All I get is mud when it comes to the double and multiple stops.
Bravo, sir, for making this sparkle.
As a bit of consolation the fugue is in my opinion the hardest movement in all of the six partitas and sonatas, even harder than the chaconne

As the others suites and partitas you've already uploaded, this is very very beautiful and interesting. In my opinion, you shuld upload a BWV 1004 version similar to these, becose the one you've already uploaded is so different (different violin, different tuning pitch, different acustic, but Sato's playing skills are always at the top)

Het Brodsky kwartet heeft deze sonate in augustus 2021 omgezet naar strijkkwartet. Dat levert heel mooie muziek op maar Sato steekt in zijn eentje het kwartet naar de kroon, hoe goed zij ook spelen en hoe muzikaal hun transcriptie ook is. Beide zijn een feest om naar te luisteren, mede met dank aan Bach.

Diese seidige Klang fiel mir etwas unnatürlich. Ich stosste den Equalizer-Regel bei 4 KHz und 12 Khz auf, und sofort erschienen die Krätze und Reibelungen, wohl nicht in dem Mass, wie bei anderen. Bei Mischung sind die oberste Frequenzen einfach abrasiert - so konnte Herr Sato eiene menge Seide auf seine wohl darmsaitige Tongabe zusätzlich bekommen.
Ist es Möglich, dass ich was nicht richtig verstehe? Jede können das ausprobieren.

Sato made all preceding interpretations totally outdated.
I know, his approach is totally fresh! And on a Baroque violin, which is fiendishly difficult to play well.

In the other videos, they mention that the tuning they used for this set is lower than the usual A=392 Hz. That's one reason why it sounds dark. I mean I find 392 Hz already dark.
Beautiful interpretation! But this sound is not real! It is so manufactured. What a dream it would be to pick up a fiddle and for it to sound like this! I don’t mean to take anything away from this wonderful playing and I’m sure his tone production is impressive, however it is not what we are listening to!
Have you ever played in a gigantic resonant church? You know, like those Bach thought about his music being played in? Yes a violin won't sound like this in a small dry room but believe me, if you were listening to this live in one of those churches, this would be pretty close, except live would probably be even more beautiful.
Well, all recorded music is to some degree not pure. It will always be different even for us viewers , also depending on our headset/sound system.
I think that it sounds more like Shostakovich, or Prokofiev.....!!!

Of course maestro Sato plays very well: beautiful sound and extremly good intonation.
I don't like his interpretations: the exaggeration of every expressive nuance implicate the loss of the harmonic, melodic, rythmic and formal structures, that are the heart of baroque music expression, especially in Bach.
I don't want to be polemic but only to know opinion that are different from mine, so what do you think?

As an amateur violinist, I am in awe of this playing. (And to all the performances of the NBS!) As a life-long Lutheran, I have been steeped in Bach since birth. Both my parents were active in church music. (Yes, my father was an organist.) I first started playing movements from the Bach sonatas and partitas over 50 years ago. About 40 years ago, I put gut strings on a modern violin, tuned it to A=415Hz, and purchased a treble viol bow because it was available, and I did not know where I could get an affordable baroque violin bow. About 15 years ago, I purchased modern reproductions of a baroque violin and bow. To me, Sato's playing is both logical and emotional, which I believe applies to much of Bach's music. It takes enormous technique and musicianship to play these pieces the way Sato can. His playing and ornaments have individuality and personality that bring the music alive and make his playing identifiably different than that of other excellent baroque and "modern" performers of Bach. I am often delighted to hear phrases and think, "I have not thought of it that way before."
I have also seen comments on other baroque specialists that they are robotic when played exactly as written. However, after probably years of playing these sonatas, shunske knows where to stretch the rubato. I once played a flute sonata for a year and I know that from just playing it straight, that this is not what Bach always wanted or expected.

I find it quite inappropriate for the performer to be moving around like a spastic during a Bach Performance. It's not just about playing notes... I would advise to the hosts of the channel to make it an audio only video.
