  • A follow-up from the post on Thread Taps, this is one way to successfully make threads with a die. Sometimes the Thread Die does not like to follow the shaft -- goes off to one side or the other. This is one approach to solving that exact issue. And, to make it harder, we chose to do the video using a thin wall stainless shaft with a welded seam.
See MechanicalElements.com for a whole lot more. Enjoy.

Hex dies are not made for cutting new threads. Only for repair for damage threads. That's why it took a lot to cut those threads and you probably payed 5.00 for that die. A round die that is HSS will cut smooth threads and is about five times the price as a hex die and will cut much easier.

What situations would this be more suitable for over just getting a pre-threaded pipe?

That's a genius hack. Thanks for sharing that idea.

I would think that to free both hands you could hang/tie a weight of some sort to the drill press handle to hold pressure on the die. The amount of weight, of course, would vary depending on the circumstance. Good video. Thank You...

You could also put a rod or drill in the chuck to keep it centered.

Won't the jaws interfere with the die then?
