- India-Pakistan holds retreat parade at three locations on the western borders of India.
Most famous of them is the Wagah-Atari Border parade at Amritsar.
Retreat parade at HUSSAINIWALA border at Ferozpur has its own charm.
And some would argue that its even better than the Wagah border parade.
Hussainiwala border parade arena has a big amphitheater wherein the two forces performs the parade on the same platform unlike in Wagah where parade is separated by the border gates. The display by the forces (BSF-Pak Rangers) is visible to the crowds of the both sides.

Since 1970 there has been a Retreat Ceremony at the border crossing every day at 6 pm, similar to the Wagah border ceremony. Attendees are seated in close proximity here, as compared to Wagah where crowds are kept far apart. And unlike the jingoistic display at Wagah which draws nationalistic tourists from all over India and Pakistan, the Hussainiwala ceremony is a more intimate ceremony attended mostly by local Punjabis from either side of the border. As a result, the atmosphere is not as tense, and Indian and Pakistani attendees often smile and wave to one another, and even cheer for each other's guards as they perform the border spectacle.

The history behind how this came about to being a "Thing." Is actually quite amusing, and amazing. To sum it up this is one of the border crossings between Pakistan and India and well the Border Guards kept trying to one up each other, well people starting watching, and well it's kind of a sporting event now. lol

This ceremony started in 1959, so John Cleese may have been inspired by this instead of the other way around. Stomping marching soldiers is a centuries old thing of both disciplin and theathre. The indians and pakistanis are like rivaling brothers, so this display is exaggerated for the cheers and enjoyment of the spectators. Much better than fighting eachother with guns again. ;-)

I don't know if you were in your branch's "Honor guard' but I wasn't. As for wearing your formal uniform, I too hated it especially when it was for inspection or drill/marching. Dry cleaning, inspecting it and the practicing of marching really sucked. Most Americans wonder why we don't have an annual military parade like other countries. For those who NEVER wore the uniform, they'll never know. First of all, it's a waste of money/resources and the time spent practicing the marching to perfection with multiple times throughout the day and week is just frustrating...
1:21 I know how most people think the walk/step is funny, but that aside the way he was handed the rifle made me realize they aren't like our conventional soldiers, they resemble warriors. That's pretty cool. Stay strong India!
