INDIA VS. PAKISTAN FACE-OFF AT WAGAH/ATTARI BORDER CEREMONY (WITH COMMENTARY)! (4K)

  • The Wagah/Attari Border Ceremony at the India-Pakistan border, which has occurred here since 1959, is the most unique and surreal changing of the guard/flag lowering ceremony in the world. Why? Because India and Pakistan are basically enemies and have fought three wars against each other since 1947 and even today, they are technically still at war over the disputed territory of Kashmir. Furthermore, soldiers from each side come within inches of crossing each other's border, as they continually taunt and try to outdo each other with high-stepping, chest puffing, arm waving, and clenched fists. What makes this ceremony even more unique is the festive pre-ceremony; I felt like I was at an American football game instead of being at a tense border ceremony. In fact, the pre-ceremony is just as fascinating as the ceremony itself. Despite the rivalry, it was a display of pageantry, respect, and cooperation, which gives me hope for the future of Indian-Pakistani relations!

I wonder how this insanity of a festival came to be?!? A lot of resentment must be felt to not feel awkward and instead to feel patriotic when your side makes those outlandish movements or ritually fights the other side with invisible swords.. I guess this show is used to defuse or express peacefully some of the frustrations on the border settlement...Just crazy (from an outlander's perspective)

Yes, this used to be a serious ceremony with both sides simply marching in with their full dress goose stepping style in absolutely perfect unison, attempting to look sharper than the other guys. It now appears to have descended (hasn't everything?) into an NBA Dunk Contest style "look at me" individual performance, complete with hot chick soldiers/cops (who aren't that good compared to the old days - but they ARE hot). I'm beginning to understand my Grandparents more each day. It IS all going to Hell.

If the original Idea of Sukarno, Nehru, Ali from the Banding conference of 1955 would revive that these three countries (Indonesia, India & Pakistan) could combine forces, also with Thailand (without dictatorship) and VietNam, there would be a real new world power. A force fo the good - with al the philosophy and culture in the history of those countries - to compete peacefully with the USA, China, Russia and (Western) Europe. With a new vision on everything. The only problems to solve are poverty, environment, the thread to nature an climate change.

In this a country goes to the moon and plants their flag. Yet another country consoles itself by drawing a picture of the moon on its flag.

Beautiful ceremony - I love these videos. I like that two nations can work out their differences in a dance-off.

@@yashpallalas8409 Nope, their were no nation before that. Officially Pakistan is older than India but in reality both came in existence during the midnight of April 14th, 1912. Before 1947 there was no nation. Both were a colony of Mighty British empire and even before the mighty Brits came, there was no India. Just many Kingdoms which frequently used to change it's shape!

I saw this ceremony with my Overseas Adventure Travel group in 2018. It was a wonderful, yet surreal ceremony that I will never forget. Thank you, Andy, for your excellent photography and commentary. I smiled during your video remembering the crowd's enthusiasm and military posturing.
