Which is why he's the #1 Superman, plus his height, etc. Reeve is just AWESOME... :)

@@awsomeverse9644 nah that was Cavill. The way overhyped him while the movies were fresh, now there’s only a few still clinging to cavill sups. No one will remember the performance in 10 years
@@awsomeverse9644 to be fair, superman returns was routh first big budget film so he was still young in terms of his acting skills. On top of filling the boots of Reeves primarily because he looked like him. I don't think he was perfect but far from terrible. Same with cavill, great job acting but the studio itself ruined the film for me.
+Jerome “Ashura” Jeffery That remains to be seen. Cavill was good, but he'll only be great when they decide to give him more to do/say. He was a bit too reluctant-to-talk in _Man of Steel,_ which worked for the approach that movie took, but at the end of the day, Superman's not that type of person, or at least grows out of that phase enough to shine in the public spotlight. If Henry Cavill can manage to act both as the "baby" Superman we saw in MoS and the fully-realized Superman that everyone comes to love in the comics, then he may well outshine Reeve.
chris71388 I didn't spell his name wrong. The only problem with the his name is the s at the end. It shouldn't be there. Which I am fully aware of. Ya'll act like people aren't allowed to make mistakes.
Reeve is not just the ONLY Superman, I remain convinced his is the greatest portrayal of a superhero there's ever been. The pure integrity, the goodness, just shines out of him. When he says "Truth, justice, and the American way" it doesn't provoke the slightest negative cynical reaction from me - he means all those things in their best and truest sense. He stands for what is right. There's no other performance to touch it, even in the very best superhero films we've seen since. Chris Evans gets damn close, again with a character that some would dismiss as bland, too perfect, too whiter-than-white. But Captain America and Superman both stand out as exceptional embodiments of the mythical America of justice and liberty. We need them desperately now.
💯 I agree. Reeves performance made the first ever comic book movie a timeless blockbuster and no one has personified a comic character like he did. Reeves fit the role like hand in glove.
Nobody could ever match the level of Christopher Reeve as live action superman. If he was born 35 years late he would be playing superman now with improved costume, graphics and body type. Would have been so awesome
I was just waiting for Tom's name the entire time. I started watching Smallville when I was 5 and I still love it now. Tom and Christopher will always be Superman to me.
My list #10: Danny Dark - Super Friends #9: George Reeves - Adventures of Superman #8: Brandon Routh - Superman Returns #7: Dean Cain - Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman #6: Tyler Hoechlin - Supergirl #5: Henry Cavill - DC Extended Universe #4: Tom Welling - Smallville #3: Tim Daly - Superman: The Animated Series #2: George Newbern - Justice League/Justice League Unlimited #1: Christopher Reeve - Superman: The Movie
Tim daly is way to low for my liking. He set the standard not George newborn, and as much as I like Henry Cavill as an actor, his dark and moody portrayal isnt close to his comic book persona. This is what the list should look like in my opinion 1. Christopher Reeve 2, Tim Daly 3. Tom Welling 4. George Newborn 5. Henry Cavill 6. George Reeves 7, Brandon Routh 8. Dean Cain 9. Kirk Allen 10. Danny Dark
My favourite is George Newbern. Yes, he was brought in to replace the excellent Tim Daly, but he's performance of Superman on Justice League was great. Especially "For The Man Who Has Everything" Adaptation.
I noticed that all actors who portrayed Superman have sharp jawlines and prominent chin. For me it’s Christopher Reeve as the best who is ridiculously handsome with a jawline as sharp as an axe.
Christopher Reeve will always be the G.O.A.T. Portrayal of both Superman and Clark Kent yet no one ever mentions John Hayne Newton and Gerald Christopher’s portrayal of Superboy nor the short lived Ruby Spears Superman animated series.
When a actor is still considered the face of a character 30 years after the last time he played that character it says a lot. It is unlikely Cavil will be remembered so fondly or as closely associated with the character like Christopher Reeve. 30 years from now Christopher Reeve will still be the face of Superman.
@@blackSUAAAVE Superman 2 Donner cut handles Zod better. Superman sent Zod, Nom and Ursa back to the Phantom Zone. That is what Superman should have done.
+holiday07 I was thinking it was unfair that Tim Daily wasn't top 3. Only ones better than him are Tom and Christopher. Cavil should have been 5th. After a 4th place Newborn(another animated superman).
+holiday07 I think Cavill's a little too rigid when he's playing Man of Steel. That's the impression I got after watching it. Which is a pity cause I usually like him in other movies (ie HellRaiser, Stardust, The Cold Light of Day, etc.).
A MAJOR omission is that of the best Superman voice actor ever... Clayton "Bud" Collyer. Who actually portrayed the character longer than Tom Welling... He was Superman throughout the 1940s Superman Radio Series, the Fleischer "Superman" animated shorts, and the 1966 "The New Adventures of Superman" cartoon series.
Personally, I only care about Reeve, Cain, Routh and Cavill. Here´s my opinion: 1) Reeve 2) Cavill 3) Routh 4) Cain My ideal of Superman is as strong as Reeve version, and as "not a boy scout" as Cavill´s.
+Johnny ACL I agree with your list. For me though, one of the definitive things about the ideal Superman is a believably different Clark Kent. This is my top reason for choosing Christopher Reeve above everyone. It is categorically the only time that Clark Kent and Superman actually felt like two entirely different people.
+Alan Frost I agree 100% Christopher Reeve to me will always be Superman and Clark Kent I'm in my 20s and still watch those because I love seeing Superman before Snyder also I just love the Christopher Reeve movies the best
Alan Frost - That's correct. In fact I'll never forget when Joel Segal, who was a big-time movie reviewer on ABC back in the seventies and eighties first reviewed Superman the movie with Christopher Reeves. Siegel, like everyone else was so amazed with Christopher Reeves performance and the differences in how he played Clark Kent and Superman that he said you almost swore you were looking at two completely different actors playing two different roles, amazing. Reeves would hunched over so he appeared several inches shorter as Clark Kent, he change his voice to a nasally pinched sound, matted his hair down and of course acted like a complete fool which totally sold the disguise. With every other actor playing Superman all they doing is putting on glasses they may be acting a little goofy as Tom Welling did a pretty decent job of in Smallville. But with Reeves you literally thought you were looking at two totally different actors and it was just amazing and has never been repeated or duplicated since. This is why that movie is still considered the absolute gold standard by which all superhero movies have been measured even to this day because it's an absolute masterpiece and one of those movies that you would not change a single thing about.
Christopher Reeve started the superhero trend by refusing to wear a bodysuit and buffing himself up. It became a standard for all actors to follow to this day.
Welling is definitely an icon as Clark Kent... his very substantial body of work is rivaled only by legends like Reeves.. Cavill is a good Superman... but Snyder is not doing the character/stories any justice...
in terms of accuracy, reeve trumps all tremendously. However, I think it should be pointed out that Cavil'l's immesnely massive innaccuracy was not at all his fault. It was snyder's directing. Cavill played superman the way he was told to do so and was the best one acting wise imo.
Acting wise Reeve still trumps Cavill. Reeve brought Superman to life, gave him quirks and a sense of realism. Cavill recites dialogue like he's reading aloud. The only time Cavill is really effective is when he's brooding and that is so simple to convey. Reeve had a dynamic range of emotions and each one of them felt real, it didn't look like we were watching a film about Superman, he brought us into his world, that's how real his portrayal felt to people.
Khalid Henry i always thought it was one of the better ones. FOr wahtever reason the reeve films seem a bit boring to me sometimes, although I loved super man II as a kid.
Christopher Reeve was such an amazing actor, and an even more amazing human being. We should be very blessed that such a great man got to portray such a character. He will always be Superman in my eyes.
Agreed. Routh was much better in Returns than the reputation he got from it. The issue with superman portrayals in recent years has not been the actors, its that the script has moved away from Supermans human side. Man of Steel portrays superman as cold, distant, nonhuman. In other words: boring and edgy. What happened to the "boyscout"? We don't get to know why he goes around saving people while looking really angry. Zach Snyder skipped the important parts on his way to his fantasy: angry superman, and I really dislike him for it. Chris Reeve was excellent in his portrayal of Clark Kent, which gives his superman personality and depth. I am sure Cavill would have been capable of giving Superman more personality, had the script given him the room to do so. This same issue seems to trouble most DC superhero movies these days, with the exception of Wonder Woman. MCU and Marvel on the other hand understand that for a superhero, personality comes first, then powers. This concept is something DC still has trouble grasping.
+Kal V When the script allowed for it he was good. Not as good as Tim Daily or Christopher Reeve (Let's be honest anyone would have hard time topping them) but good enough.
You mispronounced Routh! It sounds like south. Secondly, you forgot the 1966 Adventures of Superman. The great voice of Bud Collyer. Your flaws are over looked.Yes, Christopher Reeve is the best Superman today, tomorrow and forever.
Bud Collyer definitely deserved, at the very least, an honorable mention. He is the original voice of Superman - the first actor ever to portray the character, and did so on and off for thirty years - first on the radio, then in the Max Fleischer animated films of the 40s, and later in the TV cartoon of the 60s. He created the template for what people still expect Superman to sound like, and also established the convention of Clark and Supes having noticeably different voices - something Reeve picked up on in the 70s.
Bud Collyer should have been on this list. From 1941 to 1969, he was the voice of Superman, the *only* voice of Superman in English. The Fleischer cartoons, the radio serials, the first animated TV series, he voiced them all. He was only replaced in the 1970s due his having become permanently unavailable after his death in 1969.
I don't think we're giving the live action TV supermen enough credit. Tom Welling did a phenomenal job in Smallville at showing how Superman became the man we know today. And no Lois and Clark have had as much chemistry as Dean Cain and Terri Hatcher in Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman.
+MoonStar Yeah. But did the writers really need to give Sups no limit? It would of been alot better if sups would need to fight anyone stronger than him.
+Jack Samsong With all due respect, even though I didn't like Man Of Steel, with bad directing and a story that didn't go anywhere, including the super speed fisticuffs and destruction in the final battle for those of us who were still awake for that scene that is, I thought under a different director, Henry Cavill might have made a not to bad Superman. I believe the lame directing had a lot to do with his lack of personality. Whether he deserved to be on the top 3 or not....weeellll that's a different story. Ask me that again when he is directed by a more competent director. However, Christopher Reeves definitely deserved top billing though. People might disagree, but Dean Cain is my second pick.
People are mixing up actors' capabilities with writing and their opinion on how the character must be written. I considered Superman cheesy and over-powered and wasn't into a flying superhero during my youth. Thor in the latest Marvel movies changed my opinion on flying superheroes (though his flight technically comes from his hammer whose name I know but can't spell or pronounce right, sadly). And Henry Cavill changed my opinion about Superman. Was the script to Man of Steel flawed? Yeah, in some parts even I was iffy on the writers' choice. And yeah, maybe they should have probably stuck a bit more to the comics for the comic fan's sakes but... Henry Cavill sold Superman to me. He's got the looks and the charm playing the character. I smile when he smiles when watching MOS - like during his learning to fly scene (which by the way, is indeed right out of one of the comics). And his anguish after killing Zod, that yell, was extremely powerful. It's one of the few gut-wrenching yells that was powerful and yet at the same time not grimace-worthy (like Spock's yell after Kirk's death in Star Trek Into Darkness was - I really like Zach in the role but it's an awkward yell, imo). And while it's very much debated whether or not Superman has actually killed in comics (it seems at least technically he has) and if there could have been a better turnout (after reading the novelization of the movie I am leaning towards no there wasn't really any other option in that moment) I argue that at least it can't be denied that MOS' Superman was deeply bothered by it, and that is true to the character. It is the same with Batman V Superman. Cavill did well with what was given to him (which I personally didn't think was as bad as the negative reviewers say). I only wish he'd had more screen time/lines. Apparently some of his scenes were cut and so I really hope they make the 3-hour extended version. And lastly, I personally liked Superman having to deal with peoples' inability to see the man behind the costume. I felt bad for him.
Tim Daly deserved to be higher. George Newbern was great, especially in Superman Vs. The Elite, but I don't know if he should be number 2. If they're counting voice actors, then I can't believe they missed out on ranking Bud Collyer (who played Superman in the radio show, the Fleischer cartoons, and New Adventures of Superman [not to be confused with Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman]) who definitely deserves a place on this list more than the Super Friends voice actor. I'm glad to see Cavill is high on the list to stick it to the MOS haters and because I agree that he lent a certain credibility and true nobility to the role that was only topped by the great Christopher Reeve (who is rightfully number one). Welling is way too high on the list. George Reeves should be higher than Welling.
Tom Welling is the best. He played Clark the longest and gives more insight into Supermans life than any other live action movie or show. He also does the most impressive feats with his abilities, but no spoilers there.
Even both Siskel and Ebert gave high praise to Christopher Reeve's performance as Superman/Clark Kent in their review of the movie back then. To be honest, Reeve had that Superman look besides his great performances as the character. He was perfectly cast and delivered the goods.
Smallville era was the best ! Growing up with the series was the most wonderful time ever ... Thanks to Tom Welling ! Tom and Henry cavill can portrait Superman any day !
I remember sitting in a theatre in Toronto I was 4 years old and watching Superman the movie , I can still feel the music running through me like electricity , was amazing when you first saw him at the fortress of solitude change into superman and. fly , he looked like he was gonna fly right through the screen
+TwilightVomit Tell that to Japan. Over there, voice actors are treated with the same praise as live-action actors. Also, Many consider the voice actors from DC's animated works to be superior to their live action actors.
The fact that Bud Collyer ain’t even mentioned on this list is a fucking disgrace, his performance in the 1940s cartoon movies are awesome and he was not only the first actor to play Superman EVER but he was also the first Superhero actor to create two distinct vocal pitches to differentiate between the alter ego and the civilian disguise
George Reeves was the best of the lot! In the black-and-white episodes he cut a dynamic, determined figure; his Clark Kent was debonair and self-assured. During the first year, 1951 - my favourite - Superman had an added air of mystery about him. Even in the saccharine, kiddie-friendly colour shows, Reeves displayed a sincerity and warmth perfect for the role. Christopher Reeve actually spoke dismissively of the “bad B actors” who had preceded him. Kirk Alyn (one of those “bad” actors) mocked Reeves for his shoulder pads and his Kent portrayal. Well, old Kirk’s acting style doesn’t hold up well today, and at least George didn’t become a cartoon whenever he flew! And a good way to teach Chris some humility was to remind him of “Superman IV: The Quest For Peace,” which he co-wrote. Not to mention that his “flying” was not such a dramatic improvement over the TV series. George Reeves played Kent as a capable, intelligent leading role, rather than the jittery, bumbling caricature the other two foisted upon us. One last point: let’s dispose of the old folk tale of Reeves’s “suicide.” He was murdered, in a drunken rage, by Leonore Lemmon, his “fiancée” who took 45 minutes to call the LA police (who did no real investigation), stole money from his house, then fled to New York for a lifetime of drinking and . . . well, never mind!
Christopher Reeve and Henry Cavill both made guest appearances on "Sesame Street". Christopher had a segment of speaking to Big Bird and Zoe about his wheelchair. His other appearance was saying the alphabet with Ernie. These two segments both aired in 2000. Henry's segment was about the moral virtue "Respect". He spoke about it to the Big Bad Wolf and the Three Little Pigs with Elmo. This segment aired in 2013.
All the mentioned actors deserve praise, but in the final analysis hands down, the best and most memorable to me will always be George Reeves. I grew up in the 50s and even 60 years later he is my Superman, low budget shows; great theme; and all!
Routh was never the worst, he was literally done dirty by the writers. The main reason that the crew chose him for the role was he bore strong resemblance to Christopher Reeve, and I totally agree to that!
We need another Superman film that is close to Christopher's Superman! To me the last one that came close to it was Brandon's version in Superman Returns. He still continued to give Superman heart.
Christopher Reeve basically started the whole Super hero movies for the BIG screen! ALL the ones during AND subsequently after took cues from his movies. Not saying Kirk and George didn't make good movies, for their time, but c'mon Chris knocked it outta the park!!! When most people think of supes for the BIG screen, it's usually him. Nuff said!!!
George Reeves is really an underappreciated Superman. His portrayal was so elegant and mature. But unfortunately most people watching videos like these, just really don't know him.
You guys are nuts. George didn't even look like a superman. He was bad looking guy with a beer gut. The worst actor ever. I would play superman better than that guy.
My Respects to Mr Christopher Reeves, but Henry Cavill took over in my opinion. Tom welling was good too.
+Jerome “Ashura” Jeffery Fuck outta here, the movie & actors all were a big bust. Reeves is the Mayweather of all supermans.
true
+Jerome “Ashura” Jeffery That remains to be seen. Cavill was good, but he'll only be great when they decide to give him more to do/say. He was a bit too reluctant-to-talk in _Man of Steel,_ which worked for the approach that movie took, but at the end of the day, Superman's not that type of person, or at least grows out of that phase enough to shine in the public spotlight. If Henry Cavill can manage to act both as the "baby" Superman we saw in MoS and the fully-realized Superman that everyone comes to love in the comics, then he may well outshine Reeve.
+Jerome “Ashura” Jeffery you can't even spell his name right?
chris71388 I didn't spell his name wrong.
They actually had Christopher in an episode of Smallville abd he was the one who told Clark what his real name was, where he was from and his history.
Christopher Reeve was in about 3-4 episodes
To me Christopher Reeve will always be the greatest Superman ever.
My list
#10: Danny Dark - Super Friends
#9: George Reeves - Adventures of Superman
#8: Brandon Routh - Superman Returns
#7: Dean Cain - Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman
#6: Tyler Hoechlin - Supergirl
#5: Henry Cavill - DC Extended Universe
#4: Tom Welling - Smallville
#3: Tim Daly - Superman: The Animated Series
#2: George Newbern - Justice League/Justice League Unlimited
#1: Christopher Reeve - Superman: The Movie
i think tyler should move up even more after the first 2 seaons of superman and lois
Tom Welling was good; Brandon Routh was great; Henry Cavill was awesome; Chris Reeve was perfect.
Jeffrey Ridgway Cavill was reckless!! He had no chemistry with Amy Adams. He was terrible. He is better as the Witcher.
Danny Dark
I actually prefer the more moody superman. He actually feels more like a real guy.
I find Newbern FAR superior to Daly. But Daly did a better Clark Kent.
But it isn't Superman. Actors and directors need to draw from the source material, not ignore it.
Tissan Young I agree
I'd switch Brandon Routh and Henry Cavill, but otherwise I agree.
Chris Reeve. The man, the legend, the icon..
The only true Superman.
JJ Prince Henry is the only true modern Superman

Nice list. Mine is Reeve #1, Routh #2, and Cavill #3.
+test drive Routh got the character right, just like Reeve. Cavill was a "decent" superman, but not a memorable one...
Tom Welling is number 2
Welling was way better than Cavill lol
Troy Naumu That is because Cavill breaks necks. Superman would never do that

I like Cavill a lot, but I would probably put Tom above him.
This is so unfair to Henry Cavill, ranking him lower than an animation when we've seen him in only one Supes movie so far.
Nah Cavill was good. A bit of CGI here and there. He was still a good New 52 Superman.
+Cahidi Joyo Raharjo I think you're right, but I think a lot of that was poor directing.
larry potter
Yeah, must be that! Cavill's pretty good. Must be the directing.
1- Christopher Reeve
2- Brandon Routh
3- Tom Welling (Only Clark Kent)
4- Gerard Christopher (Superboy, young Superman)
Ya Welling technically never played SUPERMAN ... never wore the suit
@@--mr.chris--- actually he did ....in the finale
This has been by far the first, the only time I 100% agreed with WatchMojo on anything. I knew that even they could not leave the Reeve.
Personally, I only care about Reeve, Cain, Routh and Cavill. Here´s my opinion:
1) Reeve
2) Cavill
3) Routh
4) Cain
My ideal of Superman is as strong as Reeve version, and as "not a boy scout" as Cavill´s.
Agreed

Reeves is more then the face of superman he's the face of hope.
I have to agree that Christopher Reeve is the best live-action Superman. Good list.
i think we can all agree that we clicked on this just to double check they did the right thing and rank Reeve in the right place :P
Cavill played superman the way he was told to do so and was the best one acting wise imo.
reeves is only accurate for silver age superman, cavill is accurate modern superman and new52 superman
I actually don't think snyder is to blame. I think the script was just not the greatest and the editing a little rocky.
exactly
If anyone says "Superman", Chris' face always comes to my mind.
I thought that Tom Welling played the best Clark Kent ever to me. He's still so hot even after Smallville's series finale almost a decade ago.
Yep
How could Bud Collyer not be on this list? He played Superman first on the radio, for well 10 years.;
Christopher Reeve was such an amazing actor, and an even more amazing human being. We should be very blessed that such a great man got to portray such a character. He will always be Superman in my eyes.

This makes me so happy that Mr. Reeve got 1st. Grew up on his movies
Routh is better as Atom
He just had a bad script with superman returns. I personally thought he was great as superman
+Andreas Ant please tell me about your success in Hollywood
***** yeah i agree with Dan tell us more about your success in hollywood
Sounds like Helen Slater's experience. She was born to play Linda Lee/Supergirl, but was grievously let down by a dog of a script.
Cavill did great
Which is why he's in the top 3
He was alright
+Kal V When the script allowed for it he was good. Not as good as Tim Daily or Christopher Reeve (Let's be honest anyone would have hard time topping them) but good enough.

You mispronounced Routh! It sounds like south. Secondly, you forgot the 1966 Adventures of Superman. The great voice of Bud Collyer. Your flaws are over looked.Yes, Christopher Reeve is the best Superman today, tomorrow and forever.
Agreed. According to IMDb, Routh is 'pronounced like "south".'
They did not forget anything its top 10 portrayls not all the supermen ranked
Bud Collyer definitely deserved, at the very least, an honorable mention. He is the original voice of Superman - the first actor ever to portray the character, and did so on and off for thirty years - first on the radio, then in the Max Fleischer animated films of the 40s, and later in the TV cartoon of the 60s. He created the template for what people still expect Superman to sound like, and also established the convention of Clark and Supes having noticeably different voices - something Reeve picked up on in the 70s.
Yeah, but we got a photo of a guy who played him on stage, in a campy musical... BC was snubbed!
Christopher Reeve will always be the real superman
Bud Collyer should have been on this list. From 1941 to 1969, he was the voice of Superman, the *only* voice of Superman in English. The Fleischer cartoons, the radio serials, the first animated TV series, he voiced them all. He was only replaced in the 1970s due his having become permanently unavailable after his death in 1969.
Christopher Reeve. both a Superman on Screen. and off screen. i still cry to this day because that great man is no longer with us.
"Even in the darkest times, HOPE cuts through, HOPE is the light that lifs us out of darkness"
AHHHH my favorite Superman quote!
An honorable mention should go to "Bud Collyer" from the 1940s Superman Cartoons and the Superman Radio Shows. His voice is spectacular.
Oh, how about that. Just came from ScrewAttack's video of Supes beating Goku's ass. Again.
I take it you didn't like the outcome of the fight.
Patrick Johnson Why wouldn't I? The rightful character won.
+MoonStar I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks this. Usually when I say Superman is the who should have won, I get massive amount of hate.
+MoonStar Yeah. But did the writers really need to give Sups no limit? It would of been alot better if sups would need to fight anyone stronger than him.
+MoonStar nope
I'd say Henry Cavill, Christopher Reeve, and Tom Welling were the best at playing Superman.
I knew Christopher Reeve would be number one. He was phenomenal. ❤️💛💙
henry cavill better be in the top 3
+STATICSOUND809 he was ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Expand Dong nice!!!
+STATICSOUND809 Henry Cavil should be way lower on the list. I guess you like characters with no personality.
+Jack Samsong no personality did you watched the video
If Cavill made you like "Superman," then you don't actually like Superman.
My Ranking for my favorite Supermen

6. Dean Cain
5. Henry Cavill
4. Tyler Hoechlin
3. Tom Welling
2. Tim Daily
1. Christopher Reeve
I was thinking the same thing. Live action stars should have gotten the nod before a cartoon.

Reeves definitely #1, best ever. Cavill is also pretty damn good.

All the mentioned actors deserve praise, but in the final analysis hands down, the best and most memorable to me will always be George Reeves. I grew up in the 50s and even 60 years later he is my Superman, low budget shows; great theme; and all!
Cavill, comic accurate and a good script=CLASSIC
Solid list, but I would put Routh above Cain.
No way. Cain was way better. Routh was the worst.
How Cavill is above Routh and Daly or even any other Superman is even more insulting.
