  • Preserve Educational Coordinator Santino Lauricella describes one of his favorite native wildflowers, the closed bottle gentian (Gentiana andrewsii). This plant, with blooms perpetually closed, co-evolved alongside strong pollinator partners like our native bumblebees.

Looking up what a gentian is and got here. Pretty purple flowers and Santino is a good presenter. The shot of the bumblebee pushing itself out was cute too.

One of my favorite plants. I've seen it all over the Adirondacks.

Such a neat flower. Neat info that you've shared here - love the comparison to pop for the pollinators! I just got some seeds myself and am looking forward to planting them soon. Any idea how long it might take to see flowers?

Thanks so much! I believe that bottle gentian seeds require 60 days Cold Moist Stratification before they germinate. Flowers should follow that, appearing in the fall.
