  • 23Zero has just released their new hardshell rooftop tent, the Armadillo A2. We got our hands on one and installed it on our 2003 Nissan Xterra. Featuring a more aerodynamic welded aluminum hardshell the Armadillo A2 is a side opening system supported by two gas shocks that aid in deployment making camp setup and tear down even faster.

    Very informative video. What made you decide to go with roof top tent vs ground tent?👍

    • @AaronandTaylor
      @AaronandTaylor  ปีที่แล้ว

      We have a light weight ground tent from Sierra Design that we keep around for backpacking which used to be our main adventure activity. But we quickly figured out that carrying everything kinda sucked. With camp gear and additional camera gear weight started to become an issue and about that time I started getting into off roading and I started learning about overlanding. The more I learned about it the more we liked the idea of having an easy camp to set up and tear down (especially for those hard times of getting into camp late at night after being on the road all day) so we bought a roof top tent with ease of use in mind.

    Looks great! Is there a moisture vent near the top?

    • @AaronandTaylor

      That is one thing this tent does not have. I did have them on the breezeway 62.

    Nice tent. What is the height of the closed tent including the bottom mounting rails?

    • @AaronandTaylor
      @AaronandTaylor  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Closed the tent body is 14 inches in height. Including the bottom rails you then add another inch on the nose.

    Hi Aaron, Just wondering does any dust get into the tent ? Thanks

    • @AaronandTaylor
      @AaronandTaylor  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No problem! There’s a little that gets in but it’s not bad. Where the mattress/tent folds by the latches some dust works its way underneath along the edge as I drive on dirt roads. I just wipe it off before I pull the ladder out and unfold the tent. No dust gets on top of the mattress either so things stay pretty clean for the most part.

      Hi Aaron, Just watching a you tube clip and saw that the roof top tent you have and the one in Australia the same doesn’t come or offer a condensation mate, how do you find it . Thanks Di

    • @AaronandTaylor
      @AaronandTaylor  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DianeLangshaw I don't believe mine does either other than the cover on the mattress which came with the tent. We live in place with low humidity so it's not such a big deal to us outside of winter but alternatively you can do some DIY work by picking up some carpet tiles to cut and stick on the inside floor of the tent.

    This tent has the Light Suppression Technology and is claimed to be up to 15% cooler. At peak ambient temperature in mid to late afternoon during July / August in your desert climate, what was the temperature difference inside the tent versus outside the tent?

    • @AaronandTaylor
      @AaronandTaylor  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      From what I’ve experienced it’s going to depend also on airflow through the tent to maintain that temperature difference. I really like it but being here in the Southwest deserts at the peak of summer temps, we’re usually trying to gain altitude in the mountains away from hotter areas. Most times in the summer there’s about a 20 degree difference between high elevation mountains and low elevation plains.

      I have the walkabout and LST is awesome. When it is cold, the inside is warmer by 3-4 degrees. When hot, the inside is cooler by 4-5 degrees.

    Did your bedding fit when closed?

    • @AaronandTaylor
      @AaronandTaylor  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There is about a 1ft. (maybe a little wider) gap inside towards the hinges when folded up so in theory I can roll up bedding into that corner when I pack up. I'll be experimenting around with that to see how well it works.

    Oh how much bedding you can stuff inside of it?

    • @AaronandTaylor
      @AaronandTaylor  ปีที่แล้ว

      This is the best RTT I've used so far. The tent fabric is great with LST. For bedding storage you get about 18 inches width on the driver side for the length of the test. Should be enough room to stuff some compressible pillows and roll up a few blankets or sleeping bags.
      I've been hoping to make a review of this tent and what it can do but we've been having some engine trouble keeping us from getting out this past month. Hopefully we'll get back on the trail soon.

    What's your Xterra's roof load rating?

    • @AaronandTaylor
      @AaronandTaylor  ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m not sure what the Xterras rating is but the the rack is a Gobi Ranger roof rack and it’s rated for 600lbs static and 300lbs dynamic.
