  • Cliff Martinez, once the drummer of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, is now a renowned composer of soundtracks for films like Drive, Springbreakers and Solaris.
    VPRO Cinema's Cesar Majorana took him to a music store in Rotterdam (during the International Film Festival) to talk about his work, the magic of synthesizers and the secret of a good soundtrack.

    Drive has one of the best electronic soundtracks. And this guy says he got into synths for the project. Damn, he's something

    @4:10 introducing Drive OST and it's a piece of music Cliff didn't write. That track is by the Chromatics.

      Yes, I don't think this TV show does a lot of research, besides I find the interviewer very sycophantic, I love the music of Cliff Martinez but calling him "the best film score composer in the world" is a bit exaggerated when you think of Ennio Morricone or John Williams for example.

    Great composer, great man, humble, friendly. Watch and Listen at least the beginning and the main time of "too old to die young"! Thanks for sharing this nice interview

    Cool interview. Though I don't get how Cliff says he only got into doing synth based scores when he'd already done Traffic, Narc, Wicker Park, The Lincoln Lawyer, and Contagion, all of which heavily rely on the synth. Can anyone explain what he might mean, or is he somehow being modest?

    • @retro.spectral
      @retro.spectral ปีที่แล้ว +1

      He might've meant the use of sequencers and drum machines in particular. The scores you mention are largely electronic too, but mainly ambient synth washes and a lot of acoustic instrumentation spliced in that may sound electronic post-mix.

    What was that song playing in Solaris when George first met Jeffrey Davies.It was a futuristic hip hop sound that reminded me of Lil' Wayne.Kind of dope.The steel drums,no shit.I thought ice instruments because they were all the rage during that time period.🤔

    like 20x I've heard a new score that sounds like something I've played, then learn it's this same guy. I was curious to know if he's just as handsome. BTW I hate to tell you but I think the secret to a good score is a lot like the secret to winning the lottery. find and steal a winning ticket. jk. I'm not sure it's even possible to "break into the score composing game" even though I personally enjoy indulging the idea

      I believe he was speaking of trying to have a career as a film composer. As one who has worked in TV, I can tell you it's better to make film composing (or filmmaking) a divertissement (hobby, if you will) that you can be serious about, even make side money in, than to expect to generate ALL of your income for your entire life in. That takes a lot of luck, connections, selling yourself, and more. Way beyond just talent.
