Retired ABF Carlisle, Pa.started in Los Angeles with Navajo in 1973. Change operations to Chicago in 1975 and ABF took over in 1979 and then to Carlisle. 27 years accident free. Retired 2002 at 60, they would not repair my heart veins for the 3rd time. Changed from HERSHEY Hospital to UMPC GROUP AND they have been fixing me ever since, I will be 81 on Sept. 12. ENJOY, EVERY TRIP, I DID.
Dolly with no brakes was not a problem. In fact,... there were times, if you had a set with a heavy front pup & an empty rear pup, it was actually dangerous to have the service brakes hooked-up on the empty. I came down a off ramp in the rain one time & was coming to a normal stop, I looked in the mirror & my empty (with the service brakes hooked-up) had locked-up & slid completely sideways ! - After that, on wet or icy roads with a loaded front & empty rear, I'd leave the 'service line' off of the rear pup. (it would be hooked to the pup, but not to the source. Easy way to remember is; Every time you hook or unhook (except the dolly) is a 'Pin' I'm sure that your videos are interesting for 'non-union' drivers as well as us old fart teamsters; Lot's of memories... Steve / W5BIB - ex CF Linehaul T/O
We get paid the same way At FedEx Freight for dropping and hooking. Fifteen minutes to drop the hooked set and thirty minutes to hook a set. Fifteen minutes to fuel the tractor.
What's with the move to acquiring new pup trailers with _swing-doors_ at *ABF?* Is it for future compatibility with the Vaux MPs (mobile platforms) that began being loaded in 53' swing-door trailers in _Kansas City (KCI), Salt Lake City (SLC),_ and _Indianapolis (IND)_ terminals during 2023?
When I was working the company I worked for wouldn't let us pull just a dolly, so I have no ideal what DOT would say. Thanks for your service, retired driver after 36 years and a old Navy man.
I agree with you questioning the legality of bobtailing with just a dolly. If you get into an accident, that thing can easily come loose and cause a serious secondary crash. Also, the dolly could have a slow leak that will eventually engage the brakes while you're driving down the road, unless you drain the air tank first. We don't move dollys that way at FedEx Freight. If a yard ends up with too many dollys, central dispatch will start setting up trips into the yard with a just a single pup, but leaving with a single and a dolly. In some cases, they will have the shop remove the outer wheels and load some of them onto a trailer to be shipped out to another yard.
Every connection equals one pin. Tractor to lead trailer, Dolly to lead trailer, Dolly to rear trailer. .25 for each pin, .75 total to hook or break a set. At least that's what Yellow paid.
Yellow had some dollies that were over 40 years old. Oldest build date I saw was 82 but most were built in the mid to late 80s. They usually had been rebuilt once or twice with only the frame being original. We had some newer dollies like yours but they didn't have the crank landing gear which might explain why they have a counterweight. Luckily most of the dollies were the older ones with crank landing gear which is MUCH easier to use than trying to lift the newer dollies up to the pintle hook.
Hey former 88m here. I have been laid off from holland no job yet. Im looking nothing decent out here in Chicago. I tried ABF but they arent hiring. Keep on trucking HOOAH
I don’t know what you could do with your dolly I don’t think they should be going down the road without the brakes hooked up especially since they are making people with fifth wheel trailers and some mid to large trailers have battery backup for the emergency brakes so if they come unhooked then the brakes will apply and stop it quickly and those dollies with four tires and rims are heavier than you might think and if they broke free and the safety chains broke that dolly could go a long way and do some major damage but on the other hand if they were hooked up every time you step on the brakes the dolly wheels would lock up because they have less weight on them than the truck has similar to tag axles on dump trucks you see skid marks all over especially by big bumps or dips in the road because the tag axles don’t carry as much weight as the steers or the drive axles have
Forgot to mention I am a Navy Vet. I was on a landing ship tank , LST 836 USS HOLMES COUNTY. There is a video on TH-cam of the ship. We called them LONG SLOW TARGETS max. speed 10 knots,
Yeah I see FedEx freight and ups pulling a dolly all the time down the highway and dot doesn’t say anything to those guys. I use to work the yard in the switcher at FedEx freight before I started driving and them guys did it like clockwork going back to their hubs
Not being political but I think its the effects of the spending we've been doing and the interest rates rising....its slowing down what people buy or they're choosing vacations and experiences over buying material goods....so our freight is slowing, but hopefully for Christmas it picks up....i drive for Riverside Transportation

I just left ABF Carlisle 4 hours ago.
Are you working at 042 or from another terminal?

It’s usually just the pigtail plug that’s bad, not the cable. I used to old plastic seals to stick under the plug and keep it from flickering.

Nice video. I am a Teamsters Union member also. You and the 717 trucker have good content in your videos. Thanks

If the dolly doesnt have breaks, 0it could jack knife easier? Especially on wet surface.
Still slow at 064. Hoping it picks up soon! Love your videos bro. Been to 009 probably 10 times since April
As long as the consumer struggles with higher prices, all supporting industries will feel the strain.

Hang in there bro. Im number 98 on the extra board. I haven't seen it this slow since 2008
Forgot to mention I am a Navy Vet. I was on a landing ship tank , LST 836 USS HOLMES COUNTY. There is a video on TH-cam of the ship. We called them LONG SLOW TARGETS max. speed 10 knots,
Hi I’m a fan and I like your videos and keep up the good work and be safe out there 😊👏👏👏💯💯💯💯
My dad drove for Carolina Freight for 30 years or more then one year for ABF then retired in 2000.
Yeah I see FedEx freight and ups pulling a dolly all the time down the highway and dot doesn’t say anything to those guys. I use to work the yard in the switcher at FedEx freight before I started driving and them guys did it like clockwork going back to their hubs
You get a good workout hooking up!
You just secure the airlines and plug in the light cord and let it free wheel . It's legal but it must have lights on the back
Cool video on ltl
Slow at 064. Im 233 of 244....had a good week last week though off to a good start this week.
Hope 064 picks up soon! I’m right around you in seniority
It's slow on east side also. like the videos.
Yep slow they shut the CSP down at Carson temporarily kinda screwed me
My Uncle Les drove ABF for 6 years
What about with Yellow going out of business? You should be picking up some of their work.
Yellow hauled junk freight for cheap rates. ABF only wants what they can profit from
Hey, Soldier, "work" is just a four letter word! - Scorpio
ups is slow right now in the DFW
Busy at 114
How close are you to getting a bid?
Dallas is an extra board heavy terminal. We have 110+ drivers and only 46 bids. So the bids are usually for the guys that have 5+ years seniority.
#FJB
Nah man that's an hour. That's 4 pins
Where'd you see the 4th pin? Sometimes I will have to stage the rear trailer in order to build the set. In that case it would be 4 pins for sure.
@@thearmyvettrucker5410 nobody knows if they're not there 🤫🤣
Alot of times when I've had ABS issues i clean the prongs off, it usually fixes it
