Bless his heart. So sad. His wife obviously had a problem with spending and he just tried to love her through it. I hope he has plenty of money left to take care of himself in his old age. This is hard to listen to, but maybe it will serve as a reminder to all of us that money and things can't buy happiness. And at some point we need to ask ourselves, how much is enough?

I would suggest putting it all in your will what goes to who. My mother passed last year and I got nothing my Mother wanted me to have of my one my brothers. Since my father is still alive but has dementia he is my fathers executor. I was unable to get things my mother wanted to me to have because she did not put them in her will and everything she owned legally belonged to my Father. Also she wanted me to care for her cat as she didn't want my Father to be responsible for him with his dementia. Well she didn't put this in her will wither and my Father has her cat. Even though I feel he can't take care of a pet , I have no recourse. Hopefully your children aren't like my brother. My Mother had ceramic Christmas trees that she wanted to my sister and I . We didn't get these either. I miss my Mom more then to his materialistic things but any flying of value she wanted to go to other sibling my brother went through the lawyer and we couldn't get them because it wasn't legally done in her will. It only takes one person in a family. Unfortunately there usually one in every family who takes advantage.

The comments on this video are sad & frustrating. Has nobody ever spent time with an older person who has suffered loss, or just an older person in general? Yes, this man was emotionally attached to the things, but they belonged to his deceased wife, of course he’s going to be attached to them. What is wrong with letting an old man talk? He was obviously very proud of how he cared for his wife, regardless if he’s out of touch with the reality of the market. I personally really enjoyed listening to him. Our elderly, in my opinion, are our nation’s treasures. They have so much wisdom & so many stories. Thank you, Jocelyn, for sharing this video with us. These types of conversations are very common when picking. As a buyer you need to let them talk and then make an emotional connection to them. They want to share their story and it’s important you listen. This is their life journey, that’s not something to take lightly and be flippant about. He clearly loved his wife, he was willing to part with a lot. He just needs to make a human to human connection with the people buying. Obviously they ended up buying things and hopefully when they left he felt good about the interaction. This is how my husband and I approach buying collections. Let them tell their stories. Along the way you compliment their collection and engage in their stories. You empathize with them. When you start actually talking money they feel better about selling to you.

I think people are being way too harsh on this man. We are judging him by today’s standards not understanding the value of things pre internet.
I feel like he loved his wife and wanted her to have all the things she loved.
In the 70s, 80s and 90s there was still a high value on most of these things. Women (and men) who had things passed down to them saw the value in those old family heirlooms. The prices hadn’t collapsed yet. Once the internet hit values went WAY down because now you could find things so much easier.
Because things did have value this is also when lots of fakes started and this was the first time people got taken quite frequently, this is another reason prices started to crash. People started to question the authenticity of things.
It’s a complex situation that we judge people on without understanding how things were during this time.
I feel like he loved his wife and these things all have memories. I’m shocked people are judging him so harshly. He clearly loved her and when he said he was happy she she didn’t try to sell her things, I felt his love for her.
We also need to remember some of his family could see these videos. They know him, we don’t, I think some of the comments are a way too judgmental.
Often these people just want to know you appreciate the things, they want to see you have an emotional connection. One time we went to a home to pick and the man wanted $50 to $70 for Salt and pepper sets. We let him talk and share his collection and eventually he told us to pick out 10 to 20 sets and we could have them for $5 a set. Plus he sold us quite a bit of other things that were local history at reasonable prices. Sometimes you just need to let people talk.
He obviously worked hard to provide for his family

Here is this elderly man working through grief, probably lonely, and trying to honor his wife's memory by not just throwing all her stuff away. Jocelyn and Berner bro (can't remember his name) are really doing him a favor, and also doing what they are good at, and everyone will make some money in the end. Thank you for picking up the Pigeon Forge Pottery bears! There is a Pigeon Forge Pottery Collector's Club, so we will be on the lookout for it! You missed a piece however. When you picked up the 2 piece chicken set, there was a PF Pottery swan right beside it! Thanks for making more people aware of this lovely pottery.

Wow! I thought I was high class hoarder. When my husband died I turned to things for comfort. The amount I had doesnt compare to this though and most of it has been donated at this point. Even so, if I could go back 20 years Id put all that cash into the stock market. You can't take it with you whether it's money or stuff. The life story this guy just goes on and on.

He did talk a lot, but I'm sure part of that was that HIS WIFE DIED AND HE'S LONELY! He wasn't trying to gouge them, he stated, more than once, that he didn't know what things were worth. Also, who doesn't want to get as much as they can?

Thank you for showing all those wonderful things, they brought back such good memories ! :~)

I totally agree about the prices, Jocelyn. Those were book prices at the time. The husband doesn't seem to grasp the notion of price fluctuations. Ros ville is the perfect example of things being worth a fraction of what they once were. I doubt prices will go up in his lifetime and even at lower prices some will go unsold. He really needs to just get most of it gone!

My Grandmother didn't have that much money to play with, but she was the same way. She loved to buy " pretty things ", or things she was told ( or " showed " ) was $$ worth XX $$ amount of dollars. She grew up on the farm, an those pretty things ( with special names ) cost more money than they had to " waste ". So in her later years, she wanted to get those pretty things, that she couldn't have for most of her life. So I fully understand this whole situation. You don't want to hurt that special someone in your life, but what do you do ? You love them anyway ! An to those people out there who talk down to them, say hurtful things... Shame On You !! You can handle things a whole lot better !!

  • @jmcosmos
    @jmcosmos 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

J, I don't think I can agree with your opinion the late lady was smart and thrifty. I believe she's more the way her husband spoke of her, a person with much more money than sense who deluded herself into believing she had amassed a collection of immense value when in truth she was fleeced. The story about the ring with the false stone is the most indicative in my mind; it's just an illustration of the saying about a fool and her money. (The husband sounds as though he's trying to jaw Jacob's price up, but I'm confident Jacob has a ton of experience with this and knows better. Else, he wouldn't have the business he does.)

It honestly could be a bit of both. Shopping pre internet was vastly different from today. I do think she spent a lot too, but it’s hard to say if she always overpaid. The fact she wrote the book and value says the value likely came from the book. But she could have paid that much as well expecting values to go up instead of down, or she could have paid a lot less.
Pre internet people only had these books to base value on. Once the internet hit it was a different story and the buyers reflected the actual value. Even today these things happen. If a celebrity shows off their collection often that can increase todays value because suddenly they have influenced the value. The value was always there but it took a celebrity to influence the price to go up,
I have no doubt she spent a lot, and likely was taken a few times but that’s actually quite common when you buy vintage. While I’m better today than I was a few years ago I’ll still sometimes overpay. But I now look at it differently because the value is what I’m willing to pay.
Pre internet when we could only see things in antique malls it was MUCH harder to know what a fake was. If you never held real items before it’s easy to be fooled by fakes. This is another reason prices plummeted because fakes started to be more prevalent. So yes I agree she was likely taken a few times, but it doesn’t mean she was always fool.
In the end these things made her happy and I’m glad she enjoyed them. If people fooled her into false values they probably led a much more dismal life. She was probably a lot happier than those fooled her. 😉
