      Also want to add: sapping sting’s prone condition rider effect is huge because it’s a short-duration Earthbind and the victim (assuming it’s not magically held aloft and/or able to hover) also takes falling damage. In that sense it’s also a bit like Command, only this is an infinite resource. An EK or Tasha’s bladesinger could do this over and over again, and in the former case, as of lvl 10 be using eldritch strike to perpetuate disadvantage on the STR save

    Example for mold earth: Me (warlock) and my friends (wizard and druid) had to protect city from goblin army and we had 24 hours to prepare. We also had 4 lvl 1 caster NPCs so our wizard and those NPCs spent 8 hours casting mold earth over and over again to create trench around the city, then we filled it with spikes and used minor illusion to make it look like there is small 5 feet bridge made from earth across. They fell for it and villagers spammed molotov cocktails and something like granades (tubes with gun powder inside and explosive magic crystal on the cork) on them. We won.
    Edit: Eldritch Blast is amazing if enemy has concentration spell active - 4 attacks means 4 concentration checks

    As a home rule at my tables, I allow a full caster class to take their classes “minor magical ability” cantrip for free; prestidigitation, thaumaturgy, or druidcraft. Myself or other casters would always sink one of our cantrips into one of those, and we’d only ever not take it if there was someone else that had it. The people playing casters I know like having those minor magical talents that just make your character feel like a magic user. So far, I’ve not noted any imbalance and only positive feelings from my players. They often use the free slot they got back to experiment with different utility cantrips like move earth.

  • @MoarCheeseBirb
    @MoarCheeseBirb 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Guidance is undeniably good, but we hate it for reasons not totally laid out in the video. It's definitely good, it's effective, it's flavorful, it's really good, but the way it works at the table is "Oh let me use guidance before you try." "Did you add the d4?" "Don't forget your d4!" "Hey we forgot to use the d4 but our characters would not have can we add that now?". This mechanic on an unlimited cast cantrip means it's just a persistent nag distracting and undercutting the tension from whatever cool thing a player is about to attempt. Note that bardic inspiration does not have this problem.

    (MOLD EARTH STORY) I was playing as a Minotaur (bison) Stone Sorcerer. I used Mold Earth to create two large trenches and a funneling embankment towards the trenches. I placed several javelins at the bottom of the pits. I then taunted four large Daeodons (dire boars) to chase me. I vaulted the trenches and was lucky enough that two of the daeodons fell into the pits and were skewered on the javelins. Long story short, I got a ton of bacon with Mold Earth.

    My favorite way to use Minor Illusion is as an Arcane Trickster (but really it's a beneficial tactic for anyone able to cast it). Simply fill that 5-ft. cube with the image of an innocuous object -- a crate, a barrel, a boulder, a pile of clothes, etc. -- and crouch down inside of it. You can theoretically have 100% uptime on the spell, so you will be able to spy or keep watch while remaining out of sight!

    Thank you! Create Bonfire is an amazing spell. One trick I like to use it hold my action when the enemy is charging to cast it under them after they finish their movement. That way, not only are they hit by it when it's cast, but because they've already moved, they have to end their turn in it, netting me two hits with one cantrip. Of course, you have to already know they're going to be dashing, but that isn't that uncommon. Also, it's great to block doors and other narrow passageways while not loosing the ability to shoot.

    _Sapping sting_ is also useful for making flying creatures fall. I can't remember if hovering creatures are immune to that. Anybody else know off-hand?
    _Create bonfire_ is pretty great if you have someone who can grapple with two or more creatures (Unarmed Fighting Style, Simic Hybrid). The grappler moves, dragging his grabbed targets with him and through the fire. Each one has to make a save on the grappler's turn and of course when he keeps one held over the fire.

      About the hovering creatures... I couldn't find a specific ruling, but were I the DM I'd say it depends on the creature's mode of flight/hovering. On the other hand, something like a will-o-wisp that is floating due to having a magical nature, I'd probably say no. If it's a creature using a spell... Not entirely sure. I'd probably make them roll Concentration and they fall if they fail.

    Green Flame Blade is great when you use it as the base for a few other tricks. Stack it with Shillelagh and you can tie the base attack roll to wis or cha. Get it through tome pact warlock and stack your cha mod on both creatures you hit. Take the celestial patron to 6 and you add your cha mod to it a third time. Dip into paladin 2 levels for armor and smites, then take the flames of phlegethos feat, and you become a walking blast furnace that rolls about as many dice as a sneak attacking rogue every time you swing your flaming billy club.

  • @trapical
    @trapical 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    In my experiance, guidance on initiative rolls hardly seems that unusual because of how incredibly obvious it tends to be when combat is about to erupt.
    >You are on a ship and spot a pirate ship approaching. "I pray for guidance in this battle"
    >You are trying to sneak into a castle and hear guards approaching your location. "I pray for guidance towards a swift battle"
    >You are in the underdark and hear the rumbling of approaching burrowing monsters. "I pray for guidance should combat fall upon us"
    Etc, etc. Nearly all combat encounters have some form of foreshadowing before your DM calls for initiative. Sure, sometimes there will be truly surprise combat without any foreshadowing, and I think in those instances you as a player should, realistically, not attempt to argue with the DM that you had Guidance active. Just accept that it won't work for literally every combat event, but it should reasonably be something you can call out fairly often due to combat foreshadowing.

    I'm not a fan of Warlock's Eldritch Blast spamming, but there are some genuinely interesting builds that you can create around it if you're creative. I made a Spell Sniper for instance that was the old Warlock of the Raven Queen UA. I took Eldritch Blast, Eldritch Spear and Spell Sniper (with Agonizing blast of course) for a max blasting range of 600ft that ignores half and three quarters cover, then I took Spiritual Weapon (from the Raven lock spell list) which allowed me to deal damage with my action and bonus action. That's all just in-combat stuff though: Doesn't even get into how good this build turned out being at reconnaissance with Pact of the Chain combined with the Raven lock's class features. So, yeah, personally, I also dislike how much warlocks as a class rely on Eldritch Blast to be effective in combat, but certain builds can make this more interesting or even ignore this trope entirely.
    Edit: I'm not trynna improve Eldritch Blast's place on this list, I'm just further justifying it's place on such a top ten list.

When our rogue would screw up the check, I would be freezing the lock until it gets destroyed. Granted, the DM ruled it the way that I still would have to make the appropriate ability check adding my spellcasting ability modifier, but still. Also shape water was very handy in Avernus, because I was allowed to use it on the Styx's waters. Of course I have another problem with spell casting in general, and that is the fact that Divination, Necromancy, and Illusion are all practically tied for fewest spells over all the Spellcasters, while the Evocation school has the most spells over all the spellcasting classes. I think Divination, Necromancy, and Illusion need far mor spells. Of course, I think Evocation needs to stop getting new spells until the rest of the schools of magic have a list that's close to the number of spells Evocation has on its list.

      A warlock casting eldritch blast for most every attack is no different than a melee combatant swinging a sword or a ranged pc shooting a bow. Yeah, he can do some other things like pushing and grappling, similar to how a warlock can cast other spells or even swing a sword, but 95% of the time, the fighter swings his sword and the ranger shoots his bow...same with a 'lock casting eldritch blast. It being repetitive isn't a negative, it's just his schtick.

      I think it's just easier to come up with different ways to make evocation spells since Divination and Illusion spells are really broad and versatile with how they're described. Flaming Hands and Cone of Cold are basically the same thing with an inverted temperature and different damage die while Minor Illusion can be a sight or a sound of any type, for example.

      @@ulfbjorn14 Even so, those other examples can when and how they diversify their go-to attacks, and pretty much every other casting class has more than one go-to spell.

      @@robinthrush9672 True, but that still doesn't excuse the lack of spells from those schools. Granted, most spells seem to have a combat-first mentality, which is basically the design sensibilities of older editions carrying over to the modern edition. But still, those 3 schools probably should be getting a few more spells to make them more viable choices moving forward

    Here’s a very OP cantrip combo: snag a QuarterStaff and then cast shilleligh. After that keep using booming blade, which, if you’re more than 5th level, you’ll do consistently 3d8 damage every round. Combine that with the polearm master feat, which grants a bonus action attack with a couple different weapons including QuarterStaffs, and youre doing 6d8 damage each round at 5th level.

    • @antongrigoryev6381
      @antongrigoryev6381 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It doesn't work like that.
      1. How do you get 3d8 at the 5th lvl? Shillelagh sets the weapon's damage to 1d8, not adds 1d8. If you're using quarterstaff, nothing changes.
      2. Using Booming Blade isn't an Attack action, it is Cast a Spell action. And a bonus action attack from PM works only if you used Attack action at your turn.
      3. For the same reason, you can't use Booming Blade with your bonus action attack. It is a cantrip that requires action to cast, and it allows to make only one attack. That's all, only one Booming Blade per turn.

    • @harrisonrothacher2250
      @harrisonrothacher2250 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@antongrigoryev6381 yes shilleligh ups the damage to 1d8, but at 5th level booming blade adds another 1d8 thunder damage on top of your attack, as well as 2d8 if the target moves. And as for the bonus action, it’s really up to the DM, as for booming blade while it’s technically cast as an action it says it lasts all round so my DM let me keep the fact that it does extra damage consistent, as well as the fact that it can be used in concert with shilleligh as neither of them are technically exclusive. At the end of the day tho it really depends on how your DM views the rules and allows you do stuff like this not all DMs will allow this stacking of cantrips or doing a crap ton of damage.

    • @antongrigoryev6381
      @antongrigoryev6381 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@harrisonrothacher2250 "lasts for a round" means its secondary effect. It is explicitly said in the description that extra damage applies to one attack. If your DM allows it to work with a bonus action attack - he's doing it against the rules. Which isn't a bad thing on itself, I can't tell you how to play on your table, but your combo wouldn't work with any DM that actually follows the rules, so writing it here and calling it "OP combo" is wrong.
      Plus the enemy doesn't necessarily moves every round, for Booming Blade extra damage is often gonna be wasted. So with one attack it's only 2d8, not 3d8.

    • @tyleremery7088
      @tyleremery7088 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Psh, that's nothing. 5th level vhuman sorlock (sorcerer 3/warlock 2) with war caster can do 8d8+3d6+6 in a round.
      - Cast booming blade as an action (we'll assume a spear is being used, two handed because of the war caster feat): 2d8+3.
      - Quicken dissonant whispers as a bonus action: 3d6.
      - The enemy must move away from you, triggering the secondary damage of booming blade: 2d8.
      - As the enemy moves away it also provokes an opportunity attack, so you can cast booming blade as a reaction: 2d8+3.
      - Because the secondary booming blade damage and the opportunity attack are triggered simultaneously on your turn, you choose the order in which they resolve, so of course you want the damage to trigger first so that you can reapply the effect.
      - The enemy continues to move away from you because of dissonant whispers, triggering the secondary damage again: 2d8.
      Does it cost some resources? Yes. Is it worth a single 1st-level spell slot and two sorcery points? Absolutely. That being said, though, it will no longer work when TCoE is released due to the interaction between booming blade (which will now have a range of "self") and war caster (which requires the reaction spell to target the provoking creature).

    Is there an official book or something that adds more spells, especially elemental spells. As a ice draconic-blood sorcerer, there not enough good cold spells. Especially single target spells, ice knife has a burst, snow storm is an aoe and frost bite is a cantrip which you can’t power up by up casting. Wanting to take cold elemental adept but the resistant bypassing is almost useless when there’s not enough good cold damaging spells where others spells exceeded damage wise

    Eldritch blast is just the best damage cantrip in my opinion. While Warlocks do get the most mileage from it, the raw stats for the spell make it powerful. I’ve gotten good use out of it with magical secrets. Paladins and Bards get good value from this cantrip. Both classes are generally lacking in ranged damage.

    Me, watching this for the first time one year later: “Wow. This list is going to be so honest and yet so controversial.”
    Shout out to Mold Earth. I played a Sandy Petersen’s Cthulhu Mythos Awakened Cat, which is a race that can’t speak any languages other than “Cat” but can understand languages that it’s been around in the real world, ie probably Common but depending on the setting maybe something else. Whatever the humanfolk speak.
    I used Mold Earth with my Cat Sorcerer (with a level dip in monk) to great effect. I adjudicated that with a relatively high intelligence for a cat and the ability to understand language, I should be able to theoretically know how writing works. I used Mold Earth to make biscuits on the ground and form words by changing the color of earthen surfaces or carving words.
    You can also use it to create cover. 🤘🏼

    Personal favourite: prestidigitation.
    It's just so much Utility.
    The way I interpret it, you can light something that is up to the size of a small campfire.
    You can clean or soil something that fits in a, what was it? A one foot cube? I say, yes, you can clean people with that. Most shirts are larger than a foot, but you can fold them, and tada, it fits within that space. Same with people. While most people are way larger than what is specified, you only want to clean what is visible, meaning the skin, and not their intestines or whatever, and in most cases, the skin would fit inside the space.
    Maybe it's a liberal point of view, but I see it as: if it theoretically fits in, it's possible.
    Best two cantrips for bards to "steal" from other classes:
    For the meme-bard: shillelagh.
    Cast it on that "wood" to have more fun.
    More serious: thaumaturgy.
    You can make your voice louder, which is not too bad if you have a large audience.
    You can also create up to three sounds at once. So you can spice up music. Or, though I'd say, only with a lot of training, you can create your own "background singers". It'd take a lot of efford, but it is possible to "vocaloid" your way there.
    As far as I know, for the vocaloid programs, they recorded lots of single sounds, like "ah"s and "oh"s, which are then put in the right order, so you hear words. You could do that with thaumaturgy.
    One cantrip I feel like WotC may underestimated is gust. It creates a gust of wind strong enough to move objects that weight up to 5 pounds. That may doesn't sound like much, but that is about the weight of clay roof tiles, and wind strong enough to move roof tiles is a 9 on the Beaufort Scale, which is classified as "Storm".
