The version of this from the Rattle and Hum album is really my favorite. That was their live compilation following up Joshua Tree. They perform with a full choir in almost a gospel arrangement. Well worth checking out.

      I don't think it's gospel arrangement. I think it's a gospel song disguised as a rock song.

"Desire" is a banger and a half. "Sunday Bloody Sunday" is a cry out against oppression. So many wonderful songs from them you guys should listen to. The guitarist, Edge, was an innovative user of the toys available to guitarist at the time and influenced many players that followed.

    MY LETTER TO U2-1987
I saw you guys on the Joshua Tree tour in 1987 at MTSU-Middle Tennessee State University Saturday November 28th 1987. The Bodeans opened up for you. I remember at the time Larry had a crush on Wynonna Judd and she came out and sang a duo with Bono!
I didn't have tickets to the show. A friend of mine drove us 3 hours from East Tennessee to see the show. We bought tickets at the box office for $18.50. We ended up 8th row center stage!
I remember back then the band held back tickets for fans who were willing to make the drive and couldn't get tickets via phone or record store locations.
Thanks again to Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen Jr for making a special album and tour! I was 18 and had just graduated High School that year!
    All the Best!
    Gary Lagstrom

U2 shot this video in a few hours, it was all guerilla style filming, 2 vans, cameras and no plan. The very end when you see Adam Clayton (bass player, guy wearing glasses, the party animal of the group back in the day, they were only 26/27 at the time) and he jumps into the taxi for real and leaves before the video shoot is over to go enjoy Vegas! Great reaction guys, you both really have deep intelligent, honest dissections of the music.

Hearing hit songs from this album on the radio in 87 and 88 was a breath of fresh air. This was a huge sonic shift from all the pop hair metal we were overdosed on at that time.

U2 was at the time, just after "The Joshua Tree" was perhaps the biggest band in the world.
An Irish band, they were chosen to play the Super Bowl halftime show, the first halftime show post 9-11. They played perhaps their greatest song, IMO, "Where The Streets Have No Name." Watch the video for both the song and the halftime show. It's a glimpse into how big they were. I don't know if there was dry eye in the house when they raised banners with everyone who died. They basically shut down part of LA during the afternoon to film the original video.

Phil & Sam, when you listen to "Sunday Bloody Sunday", this is one of the rare occasions where there is a live version so good that it is probably better than the album version. It's from the Red Rocks concert early in their career. Most ppl would recommend doing that version over the album version.

    • @nianfiedler5291
      @nianfiedler5291 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

Not rare for U2. Live really is the only way to react to U2.. 95% of their songs are brought to the next level live. As for Sunday Bloody Sunday, I still prefer the Rattle and Hum movie version, because how intensely emotional it is, but obviously the Red Rocks version is a classic as well.

    • @cassianfalkener3706

I ALWAYS recommend the studio version first. For almost anything. I feel you can better appreciate the live version when you have the baseline and know where it is coming from. Peter Frampton is the obvious exception.

Fun fact; The word was out that U2 were doing this video shoot downtown Vegas.. so video producer dressed up four U2 look alike and put them in a laundry van to lead the crowd away. They then borrowed a shopping cart from a homeless person to to put the sound system in at and started filming this video seen here. Also producer told The Edge “ you’re character is gonna be making a living Busking.. while you’re trying to avoid this guy (Bono) following you around preaching about god” 👈🏻seen here at minute 7:45

My mom used to have a few acres up in the Hill Country in Texas. We would go up there and camp quite a bit, and I would listen to their Unforgettable Fire album. I would listen to the ‘B’ side of the cassette as I went to sleep, and then when I woke at sunrise, flip it over and listen to the ‘A’ side as I had breakfast and watched the sunrise.
My sister saw them in Munich, Austin, and Houston as part of their Joshua Tree tour, and I saw them in Austin and Houston. They were HUGE in the late 80’s/early 90’s.

They made an awesome tour movie with the songs on their movie RATTLE and HUM in 1987❤️😍👍Try watching it, I believe you’ll enjoy.
Also in the movie… they perform a rehearsal type version with a church choir. And THAT alone was so good.

Sam…you said that.Vegas didn’t look like you remember it. My husband and I moved here in 1990. And, we used to go to the Strip allot for shows and restaurants. Now that we’ve aged, I don’t go down there allot. In the past 10 years, it has changed SO much, that it feels like a different place altogether from what I remember. And U2 has moved through time as well, and is now in residence arcThe Sphere. I have tickets in February and looking forward to it. 😁

I'm not seeing it mentioned, but one of my favorite U2 songs is "Numb". Probably because it was such a huge departure from their usual sound that my jaw hit the ground after hearing it for the first time on the radio, thinking wtf?! is this, and then having the DJ announce that it was U2 and having to completely re-evaluate the song. Highly recommend the official video. If nothing else, it's a fun listen.

Hello Phil & Sam, I'm glad you enjoyed listening to U2. The 80's music video's crack me up. You either get some highly creative and well produced music videos or you get artists singing and walking around trying to do lots of really cool looking stuff while singing. But I think most people know this already and enjoy them for just what they are a bit of nostalgia. Either way, I love seeing the young baby face Bono & The Edge. I thought I'd suggest another band that I believe you've heard before and you both seemed to enjoy their tunes. So, if interested "The Police - Don't Stand So Close To Me (Official Music Video)" or "The Police - Don't Stand So Close To Me (Audio)" I enjoyed your reactions thanks for sharing and take care

The Joshua Tree album is the reason I became a fan 1987 and after moving to the states in 1998 and learning the language and being able to understand the lyrics, I’m absolutely in love with their music and lyrics. I hope you do much more. As you noticed already, Bono’s voice changed over the years. The band formed in 1976, when they were boys in high school. Bono’s voice was still raspy and rebellious. He grew up and so did his voice , and their music and songs grew with. Each album is a new surprise for us fans. Keep your way working slowly forward and I would highly recommend “ Unforgettable Fire”, “Where The Streets Have No Name” , “Bad” . Also try some life performances from their tours. Especially their performances at the Band Aid Concert was especially iconic

Your interpretation is pretty spot on. They were at crossroads as a band and the 3 wanted to go kind of Christian rock but the bassist Adam Clayton wasn’t on board. I think your interpretation and comments are spot on. As Bono said, “you know I believe it” but was on a constant search for more

If you're interested in a very interesting mix of U2. It's worth while checking out Passengers (which was U2, Brian Eno, and the late great Luciano Pavarotti) called Miss Sarajevo, which stemmed from the Bosnian war back in the early to mid 90s. I won't spoil how Pavarotti fits in, but if you know he was one of the three great operatic tenors it adds an interesting mix.

Mysterious Ways is probably my favourite U2 song close 2nd is this one. Recognisable riff but lyrically less intense.

And boy didn't they go downhill fast after "Joshua Tree". Need to watch a live version though.

I'm not a big U2 fan, but my fave song by them is Window In The Skies. Consider reacting. Great song and the video is probably even better.

I think the Joshua Tree album was their pinnacle

Kind of. I feel they had two pinnacles. The second was Achtung Baby.

Being a Brit I'm not fully knowledgeable on American geography. However, I believe the main Las Vegas Strip is actually located in Paradise, Nevada and not Las Vegas itself. Rather than searching for spirituality in sin city he was obviously finding it in Paradise.

Paradise is an area in Las Vegas, just like Winchester, etc. North Las Vegas and Henderson are 2 seaerate cities connected to Las Vegas.

Favorite U2 song? That is tough, they have a great library. I guess I would choose Beautiful Day (more special meaning to me) and I do love their version of Everlasting Love. But on most cases, you cannot go wrong with U2.

Hi Phil and Sam. This is my first comment. I love your reactions to music. I suggest Falling In Reverse. Ronnie Radke is a genius IMO. His videos are like watching a mini movie. Hi mixes many types of music. He fuses Rap, Rock, Metal and Hip Hop.
