  • It's time to get my buddy, Ol' Tex XJS, ready for an extended road trip this summer. Destination unknown at this point. Wherever it is, I'll get there via two lane roads as much as possible. The first on the list of projects that need to be completed before we leave is a rebuild of the front subframe/suspension. It's pretty shaky at this point and I first noticed it during my 2020 Chriistmas road trip to Southern California and it's gotten worse since. Not an expensive thing to do but it does take some time and effort. But definitely doable for an XJS owner that knows his way around a tool box.

Great video, very useful - the spring removal tool is excellent 👍🏻

Fantastic! I have my front subframe out and plan on disassembling this weekend. This video is very timely for me. As I am working on a former Arizona car there is almost zero rust on the subframe, so I am assuming everything will come apart easily. I have the Jag spring compression tool so that should make the process go even smoother. Am rebushing with polyurethane. My subframe also has the typical lifting damage and I was thinking the exact same thing, weld a plate on the bottom. I rebuilt the steering rack myself with an available seal kit and we will see whether it leaks or not. The power steering cooling doohicky on my car had broken some time ago, so I replaced it with a small finned cooler I found for cheap on ebay and it worked well. Thanks for the great videos.

I'm just now in the middle of dealing with my '86 front end, amongst other things. That pivot bolt is absolutely the ugliest thing I've had to deal with yet. Brute force and heat will hopefully see it through. What a PITA

did you have to support the engine when you dropped the front subframe?
    Love your channel, thanks!

Will you make your IRS removal jack plate for sale? That's much safer than the usual balancing methods.

I've seen a lot of interest in the plate since that first episode I used it. When I get the backlog of work from 2021 cleared this spring I'll be looking at new offerings.

So as long as its cushioned with a couple of inches of wood it is perfectly safe (for the car) to lift by the sub-frames?

That's what Jaguar recommends. In fact, there's a drawing in the shop manual to make the rear subframe pad and it works as well on the front. But just barely, the car is pretty low.

@@thecampchaoschronicles9567 I have a low profile lift and low ramps made from 2x12s that raise the car 4-6 inches. Is this the same recommendation for the x300?

@@SparkyGage I'm afraid I have no experience with the X300. Sorry.

You find the Jag-type spring compression tool faster, I assume, than the 4+ long bolt lower-the-spring-pan method?

    • @thecampchaoschronicles9567

Absolutely. As long as the subframe is out. I don't believe it works on the XJS in the car since you'd have to insert it from the top. I made it for XJ40 springs where you insert it from the bottom up through a slot and turn it 90º.
