    San Francisco was the last place I got to visit in February right before the pandemic hit and ruined everything. I had no idea that I would be unable to go anywhere or do anything for the rest of the year, but it's a really beautiful city. Even in February the weather was pleasant and perfectly sunny every day that I was there. Seeing this building, Alcatraz, and the Golden Gate Bridge were on my bucket list, and I'm glad I got to see them. I would love to go back eventually.

      @@RainierKine it was unnecessary to change its height. If it was built at its proposed height. It would be the tallest building in America outside of Chicago and New York. Also, you can’t really see the pyramid anymore amongst the skyline looking from the south to north because of the newly added skyscrapers. Ever since the 1,070 foot Salesforce Tower was built, it took its attention from the pyramid. It stands over 200 feet taller and offers a projection at night time. The pyramid has seen better days. But nonetheless, she’s still a beauty when seen from the north. Btw the pyramid is only 853 high. The under construction OceanWide Center will be 910’ feet, making the pyramid 3rd tallest by 2022.

      Short of actually building a phallus and scrotum shaped building, just about any skyscraper tall structure becomes normalized, part of the background that for residents signifies home. In Idaho, it's our mountains in the skyline for many cities and towns. Some places its both the surrounding mountains and skyscrapers and other buildings.

  • @davidnull5590
    @davidnull5590 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    The B1M, something to add to this story: this building has the TransAmerica's name, the TransAmerica company was small in terms of the number of workers. In 1975 the TransAmerica company occupied two of the higher floors of the building, smaller floors when compared to the lower floors of the building and most of one of their floor had only really nice large offices for their executives. TransAmerica had around 113 employees in the building including the executives and their support personnel, the remainder of the employees were on the floor below, mostly CPA people and a few MBA positions. The building was built as a symbol for the company to lease the majority of the space to other companies. Car parking was limited when built and has gotten even more scarce over the years. This was a vanity project to make the CEO feel important.

    Always been one of my favorite skyscrapers. As much I love seeing any cities skyline evolve and grow adding newer taller buildings, I kinda wish the Trans Pyramid had remained the cities tallest building.

      I think I agree with you. Here in Sydney we have Sydney observation tower that was built not long after the Trans Pyramid building. It is also quite distinctive but not as attractive or elegant and personally Im happy to see the city finally allowing skyscrapers to be built taller than it

    Huell Howser of PBS once climbed to the inner top of the spire from within the building, climbing interior ladders to the apex he was able to look out over the city, breathtaking.

    Mmm, public opinion is of course important (cities are for everyone) but should perhaps be more informed at times.
    This is why I love this channel because it aims to engage the general public with construction, using inclusive language whilst not being patronising. Thank you @B1M !

    would be interesting for you to look at the more recent San Francisco tower...The Millennium tower with its infamous lean. Actually comparing those towers that have done poorly would be an interest line to point out the contrasts to those that do well.

    I hate that they now have a taller building than the Transamerica in SF. It ruins the skyline for me. I feel the same with L.A. now.

    San francisco's first high rise was built in the same spot, it was called the Montgomery block, built in 1853 and torn down in 1959. As they were digging for the foundation, they found what they thought was a ship. I was a boy at the time, but I knew my history. I knew right away that was the foundation for the Montgomery block, where the block sat was the waters edge. No more was said about it.
    Piles, cement, steel plates, ball bearings, more steel plates on top of the bearings. Then the building went up with shock absorbers on all four corners.

    I think Herb Caen hated the pyramid - at first, at least. He used in his column masthead with toe top bent over.
    But I think he grew to love it.

    I was in San Francisco Christmas of 2016. I actually watch a video in Verizon trying to get a phone and it showed the Transamerica Primid. I was like where is that. I stayed at the Omi hotel on California st. I did everything except go see the Transamerica Primid. It was literally down the street. I have to go back just to see this.

    Imagine if people weren't nostalgic idiots and allowed the tower to be its original intended size, or bigger. The general public is rarely right about construction projects.
    Here in Portland Oregon, interstate highway 5 runs through the city and narrows down to only 2 lanes downtown. 2 lanes for all through state travel and much inner city commuting, but communities keep protesting its expansion citing increased pollution, ignoring that we're going to be moving to low/zero emission vehicles.

    For any project, there are always NIMBY's that will protect any project for a variety of reasons. Most of them are not for any reason other than it blocks the view from certain locations. In this case, it was the view of some rich people and they leveraged their wealth and local influence to kill the oroginal project. Happens all the time.

  • @olgastepanov8479

    If it were built to it's original 350m height, it would've still be an icon today, but now it's overshadowed (literaly) by a neighboring black (555 California St).
    At least Columbia tower (in Seattle) still stands as an icon despite it's reduction in height.

    • @californiamade5608
      @californiamade5608 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I didn’t really know about the Columbia tower. Either way the pyramid is still more iconic and the Salesforce Tower is taller than both. And is already becoming an icon.

    This is great architecture. Yet, i cannot understand the initial backlash and disent to the building of it when you have a giant black block skyscraper just blocks away from the iconic TransAmerica tower..?!

    • @RaymondHng
      @RaymondHng 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That brown building is the former Bank of America headquarters and it was the city's tallest building before completion of the Transamerica Pyramid. It is now 555 California Street and 30% of it is owned by the Trump Organization.

    • @californiamade5608
      @californiamade5608 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s not even as tall as the pyramid. But both those went up around the same time.
