On Hand 8: Slam cue-bids require 3 things: i) You have a fit (and you both know it) ii) You are in a game-forcing auction iii) You are interested in looking for slam On hand #8, you have a fit (and you both know it), and you are interested in looking for slam. BUT, you are not in a game-forcing auction. If West bids any new suit, it will look like a natural game-try to East (promising 3-4 spades with honors in spades). Now East will: - sign-off with all minimum hands (5-7 hcp) - bid 3S with 4 spades and 8-10 hcp - bid a new suit with no help in spades but help in another suit, and 9-10 hcp - jump to 4H with < 4 spades, an honor in spades, and 8-10 hcp - bid 3NT with a flattish hand with 8-10 hcp and values in diamonds and clubs On this auction, West is always going to game, but if East shows the right maximum, South might go to slam or possibly play in a 4-4 spade fit. When East bid 3H, showing 5-7 hcp, West settles for game Note: A jump to 3S after 2H would be a splinter bid (17-21 hcp, singleton or void in spades, looking for slam) ______________________________________ On Hand 10: When you bid Stayman and opener shows a 4-card major, a bid of 3 of the other major by responder shows slam-interest in the major shown and initiates a cue-bid auction. On this hand, if West bids 3S, they would be showing slam-interest in hearts. Obviously the West hand is not strong enough to go looking for slam here.
@@durhamdbc Thanks for the explanation - I'm quite rusty and re-learning, so I wasn't sure of all the implications of new suit after agreeing on hearts. I think the splinter bid was what I was trying to remember.
After 2H, if you jump to 3S, that signals a cuebid and slam interest?
