During the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1897), it was Korea’s “second city”, because it was the second-largest after Seoul and was an important trading port. Kaesong (another city in North Korea) was the capital of Korea during the Goryeo Dynasty (910-1392). Hamhung (another city in North Korea) was where the founder of the Joseon dynasty was born and where he retired to after he passed the throne to his son. North Korea is arguably more important in ancient Korean history.
