Thing that always blows my mind with him that he can play guitar, flute, sing, interact with the audience and dance manicly around the stage and never run out of air!

He played saxophone on at least two albums. He played bass on Storm watch.

Live he is very eccentric, but in real life he is very humble and modest. I met Ian Anderson a few years ago, one of the nicest people you could wish to meet.

Glad you’re getting into Tull. It was the mysterious “ My God “ that really made me take notice of that band,
as did everything from that awesome album. Even today it still sends chills up my spine. And yes, Ian is an absolute wizard on that flute. Saw them in concert back in 1983.

Ian Anderson not only is an exemplary musician, but his stage craft/theatrics are unlike anything ever seen before. He's certainly one of my favorite performers.

Ian started out as guitarist but around 1967-68 guitarists like Clapton, Page, Hendrix, and Beck emerged and felt he could never be as good as them so he took up playing the flute and after several weeks found he could play fairly well. He had only been playing a few months when Jethro Tull recorded thier album This Was.

Ian was amazing. I was so lucky to see him live 3 times. He also changed flute with his "extended techniques" LOL. Definatly not classical techniques. There are flute channels on youtube that have reacted as well to this performance and often where shocked and amazed. What a performer!

I first saw Jethro Tull in 1970, the same year this video was recorded. Their 2nd song was My God! which wasn't released until the next year on Aqualung. You can imagine our reaction to the most amazin' performance we'd ever seen! Managed to see most Jethro Tull tours for decades but this one remains my favorite. So glad to see you reaction to 'n appreciation o' My God! live in 1970.

My mom named me after Ian and I grew up on these albums in the late 70s and 80s. The album version is more "defined" (I guess you could say) and I love it more, but I always appreciate the freedom of artistic expression, especially when live, so this version is still awesome. Appreciate the react.

I saw them well over 20 times, from a collage gymnasium "Spring Concert" introducing the Aqualung LP to his "solo" tour for The Secret Language of Birds LP. Every show was amazing both for the music and the theatrics. If you want to see a great performance/musical piece you should look up the film Home Of The Brave by Laurie Anderson. It will knock your socks off. Watch/listen to it LOUD through a good set of speakers to get the full effect. Ear buds will not do it justice.

I've watched virtually all the reactions to this song on YT and yours John was my fav. As a visual artist, I particularly enjoyed your approach. And you'll love the many variations Tull can provide. From blues rock on their first album in 69 to almost Celtic prog in the late 70s. The studio version (from the album Aqualung) is certainly musically more perfect ...but there's a lot less panting! Lol. Love it John. more more

Love your reactions, but I think listening to the studio version first allows you to appreciate the live performance better because when I saw them every year from 1975-1980 their performance every song sounded like the studio version. FYI they dropped a new album this year. Over fifty years of music. Saw them in 2006 at the Bethlehem music festival. Hopefully he tours again. Yeah, hear the Studio Version!
In early live shows, are very energetic but limited by the technical standards of theyr time.
But hearing the "engineerd" recordings of aqualung is arousing.
For me as "Tullist" could be a tip (if theres some time left), hearing the three glascock (bass) and barlowe (drums) albums, songs from the wood, heavy horses and stormwatch, are the most pleasuring works of tull in sound and...how to name? 😳🤔... Smell Taste colour?
You can (obviously they sung about some serious stuff) hear a little humor in the wole work.
    Sorry for the grammar.
But using translators, would be "unter meiner Würde. Weitermachen!"

Ian Anderson is a musical and lyrical genius. He would be on par with the likes of Beethoven if they were peers. I saw them live in 74. You miss the point - his "antics" are to express his outrage of, and provide a satire or mockery of modern religion of all kinds. He is not doing all this wild and crazy stuff just to be crazy or different, he is using these as tools of expressing the deep undertone of the meaning of the song lyrics. Listen to "Wind Up" for a better understanding of what he is getting at in this song. He approaches all his topics like this, but not always wild and crazy - his depth of expression is virtually unmatched as is his all around musical and lyrical and performing genius. You should listen to the studio version of Thick as a Brick - one 45 minute piece, like a modern day rock/folk symphony. Critics said Aqualung album was a concept album and it wasn't and it pissed him off, so he wrote Thick as a Brick to be the mother of all concept albums and he both made a mockery of concept albums and outshone them all with it's brilliance. (and he wrote it, and band got it to a performance level in 10 days, then into recording studio and recorded in 2-3 days, so 2 weeks from inception to finished album - the man and his band are pure genius) And then 1 hit album a year for a decade!
That said, here are some examples of the man's genius:
th-cam.com/video/d76pxiPlxHs/w-d-xo.html (Jethro Tull "Locomotive Breath" (HD - Official) Live at AVO Sessions) Here he's in his 60's and his voice is shot, but he can still play a mean flute and prance about onstage.
And here watch his depth of emotion back then and now, 45+ years later:
th-cam.com/video/G0vIEOw5flo/w-d-xo.html (Jethro Tull - Wond'ring Aloud Live At Capital Centre, Landover 1977)
th-cam.com/video/C82ryR6TWD4/w-d-xo.html (Jethro Tull - Wondring Aloud with String Quartet) (song starts at 1:43)

Anderson's long solos - like this one - annoy me, because they feel like they're more about showmanship than musical self-expression. We know his main influence as a flautist was Rahsaan Roland Kirk, who of all the jazz flute-wielders was the first to take "vocalisation" into the realm of near-hysteria. But...they're two different people, one originator and one imitator, and Ian's solo raises the issue "just because you can chew the scenery whilst biting on a piece of metal doesn't necessarily mean you should!"
