He taught himself to play the flute after thinking he was never going to be up with the best guitar players, although as you can see he's pretty competent . But the thing is he didn't know much about flute as he did guitar so he played 12 bar blues on the flute more or less. I got this from an Ian Anderson interview. He comes across as a man that does not suffer fools gladly.

Ian is right up there with Plant when it comes to talent in lyrics and as a frontman, you will never see anyone do it like Ian does, so glad to have seen this band live! Don’t miss “Hymn 43” off this album, it’s a very deep rabbit hole for Tull and worth the dive to the very bottom!

Not a good comparison. Plant just stands there with one hand in the air.

i was lucky enough to see tull 3 times between '71 and '74 when i was in my early 20's. my favorite band then and still in my top 5 bands of all time. 3 of THE most epic concerts in the 200 or so i have been to. and now i have tickets to see their lead guitarist MARTIN BARRE in our beautiful western mass. berkshire hills at the worthington golf club on june 18th. he is now 76 and still shredding.

From my first of many concerts starting in 1970 , I am absolutely still mesmerized. Saw Ian last week at the Ravinia outside of Chicago . He’s unable to stop being brilliant. All those years of joy, it gets emotional. We were so blessed through out our lives to experience Tull , and yes especially with Martin I must say. That was Lennon and McCartney .

@@giacomojamesPunkRockHeadReact It was a great period for the concerts ... Led Zeppelin (in Bruxelle, just before the death of JB), Pink floyd, gong, magma, Genesis (with Peter Gabriel), Zappa, David Bowie ... At that time (1975 -1990) I was in College and after starded to work ... Even the evening of my french baccalaureat (I was 17yo) , I was running at a concert of PinkFloyd ... Great great period ... It is very difficult to find the same magical energy today ...

And yes, I have loved all things JT for way too many years! If you're interested in one of the most beautiful songs ever, 'Requiem' would be my recommendation. Completely beautiful.

To think he was a guitarist who heard Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton and then decided he couldn't compete so he SELF TAUGHT the flute in record time and history was thankfully made! I also learned from a Toni Iommi interview (Black Sabbath guitarist) that he was once invited to join Jethro Tull - Imagine that for a second. BTW another stunning mind blowing performance is Stevie Ray Vaughn live doing Texas Flood at El Macambo. You won't believe your eyes and ears I promise!

I saw them live the first time in the Spring of '72 during the Thick as a Brick tour and I have been a huge fan since. Nobody except Ian Anderson could keep an auditorium of young people absolutely captivated with a flute solo like he could. You have to be awe struck by his physical endurance and the extreme talent of everyone in the band. I've seen a lot of great shows in my life but Tull concerts are always at the top in my book.

Yep. Agree. To me this Isle of Wight live concert by JT was the absolute pinnacle. Clive Bunker and Glenn Cornick as the rhythm section too. It was Ian Anderson at his peak when he could still sing really well. His voice changed so much during the 1970s. I'd would give everything away to have seen that concert in 1970.
