    After World War Two, Colombia adopted the .30-06 cartridge as standard, purchasing a thousand .30-06 FN49 rifles and 19,000 surplus American M1 Garand rifles. With the subsequent development of the 7.62mm NATO cartridge, Colombia experimented briefly with converting their existing Garand rifles to the new NATO round. In 1990 a large batch of Colombian surplus arms was purchased by Springfield Sporters, and it included 12 Garand’s converted to 7.62mm. The conversion was done by cutting about a half inch off the chamber end of the barrel and cutting a new 7.62x51mm chamber. The handguards, stocks, and operating rods were cut down by the same amount, allowing the use of the existing gas port. In addition, the stock and hand guard were drilled with a pattern of quarter inch holes, to provide visual and tactile indications that the rifle was no longer in its original caliber. Clearly this conversion was not deemed efficient enough to adopt en masse, as only this small batch of test rifles has been seen.

    Many Colombian vets would have had experience with the Garand by the time the country purchased some from the US. Colombia sent an expeditionary force to fight in the Korean War. They were under the command of US forces and were equipped with Garands and other US hardware.

    Although I'm not ethnically Colombian. I did have a great grandfather from Spain immigrate there, because getting into the US during the late 1800s- early 1900s was a lot harder, because of the dislike for Catholics. He would then have my grandfather with some Spanish woman he brought over, and then they both would go back to Spain, never to be seen again. Instead he left my grandfather there as a child to be raised by some native woman who would be his nanny. He did leave a small plantation with other buildings that he purchased to my grandfather. Then my granfather would get older and immigrate to New York, USA during the late 1920s. He opened several businesses, then he had my dad with an Italian woman. My dad would run several of my grandads businesses until they had a spilling out with each other. Then my dad moved to the mid-west and met my mom, who was part Swiss and part English. Her family can be traced back before the revolution, she's got papers on how her ancestors fought in French+Indian wars for the English side.

    The same exact conversion was carried out by Italians.
    There was a T1, some say tipo 1, some Terni arsenal 1, that has some Garand rebarreled. But new barrels are expensive.
    So The T2 came out with the exact same gimmick: cut 12mm at the chamber end, rework the feeding ramp and external thread to screw back with proper headspace for 7,62x51, chop some wood and the tip of the piston.
    Those are usually marked on the operating rod as "7,62mm / 2", the / 2 means conversion by method 2, old barrel cut.
    Both WWII era US made rifles and italian made post war garands got the same chop conversion and were in service 'till the 90s, usually in basic training.

      Yes, it has one HELL of a concussion blast when you touch off a round! But it's more noticeable to bystanders than the person shooting it. The muzzle flash is also fantastic ;) However, the recoil is surprisingly tame in my opinion, even though it is a fairly light gun (when compared to a full-sized Garand.) *Edited to fix link.

There were two versions, Tipo 1 and Tipo 2 (type 1 and 2). They set back the barrel by one complete revolution of the barrel by extending the barrel threads and recutting the chamber face. 7.62 NATO works great because the dimensions of the case are pretty much the same (aside from length) as 30-06.
      You can use standard M1 En Bloc clips, and the rounds will fit just the same (I have a CMP Special .308 M1 Garand). Any caliber conversions using a different parent case would require modification to the feed mechanism too.
      Plus, while 7mm surplus is getting harder and harder to come by every year, 7.62 NATO will be around for decades to come. It's still used by the majority of the world as a Medium Machine Gun, designated marksman/sniper, and infantry rifle round.

    Yeah I wouldn't push down that follower.. wouldn't be a good time. Those holes make it full-auto. Everyone should do this, but in order for it to work, you have to have a fully semi-auto gun. It also has to shoot 30 rounds in a half a second. So fast that the bullets start firing out of the clip.

    As far as a 7.62 NATO M1 is concerned it would have been interesting if a significant portion of them were converted in US stockpiles, not because that itself would be interesting but because of the Cold War politics that would have caused that to happen. Something tells me if they had felt the need to do so we wouldn't call it the "cold" war.

    • @lwilton
      @lwilton 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      There was an awful lot of very hot fighting as part of the cold war, Vietnam as just an obvious marker. But none of it happened in the borders of either the US or Russia itself, so it was "cold".

    • @Volunteer-per-order_OSullivan
      @Volunteer-per-order_OSullivan 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lwilton That wasn't to say that there was no real war in the "cold war". I was saying that if the western powers believed that the soviet threat was so imminent that there WW2 equipment would need to be converted to the new NATO standard then there is a very real possibility that they may have in fact gone to war. For example the Berlin Blockade was indeed an attempt to break the will of the Berliners and as a precursor to war, had the western powers had felt so threatened the Berlin airlift may not have happened instead a preeminent nuclear strike may have been launched against the soviet forces in East Germany and Poland, as an example of course, theirs always the Greek and Chinese civil wars or the Korea war "spilling over" as well.

    • @gunner678
      @gunner678 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lwilton vietnam had nothing to do with the Cold War in reality...its a shame the US and USSR didnt realise that! An internal ex colonial struggle hijacked by nutjobs. And soldiers get used while innocents die!

    The fact they didn't get rid of them till the 90's is kind of hard to believe. By the 90's Columbia and a lot of the other neighboring countries had decent economies. I can't imagine they couldn't afford a better rifle, considering how well the coffee export business was going.
