  • One of FRONTLINE's most requested programs -- third-grade teacher Jane Elliott's lesson in discrimination.
    Subscribe on TH-cam: bit.ly/1BycsJW
The day after Martin Luther King, Jr. was killed, Jane Elliott, a teacher in a small, all-white Iowa town, divided her third-grade class into blue-eyed and brown-eyed groups and gave them a daring lesson in discrimination. This is the story of that lesson, its lasting impact on the children, and its enduring power 30 years later.

    • @Sam-nc3wl

Drastic Of course I think we should teach our children about racism.
getting 8 year olds to bully each other to tell them that it is wrong is not the way it should be done. First of all children don’t have any solid morals or empathy. Secondly bullies have a tendency to continue to using nonsense like blue eyes / brown eyes well after the experiment as a reason to harass other students and kids.
Please don’t automatically assume that I am some bigot because I don’t agree with Eliot’s methods. Only seeing in absolutes is a logical fallacy.

While I can understand the trauma that some kids may go thru, imagine the trauma you get when you have to put up with racial bias every day.

For a lack of better word, it's that children are more "naive" and I mean that in a positive way. They are not afraid to imagine a different version of themselves, to change their views of the world. As adults, we think we're weak when we change our opinions. We think our world view should be concrete. We think we are "enlightened" and stop being naive and interested. In excercises with adults, you can see how they are trying to enforce their own views on the experiment instead of taking part in it. They are too afraid to give up their egos for a day, while children are not.

When, in fact, POC can and DO get “badgered” or discriminated like this on an everyday basis. What really hit home for me, was the fact that these kids understood SO quickly that the experiment is about experiencing what racism/discrimination FEELS like. I watched the other two documentaries and the adults missed the point entirely, only thinking they were being called out as racists. That is not the point at all, the point is to experience what prejudice is like and how things that cannot be controlled are not a reason to be treated in a horrific manner. As soon as that child said “I understand how the brown eyed people felt yesterday” was the moment I knew the lesson hit home. That is what this experiment is about to realize that racism is a ridiculous reason to feel hateful towards another. Smh

Except underlying this whole experiment is the awkward question... Why don't people discriminate based on eye color...or hair color... or height.... And then the obvious realization that race must be more significant than those things. Probably because the racial group is an extension of the biological family. So she's basically just brainwashing these kids into believing that race is no more significant than eye color. Even though race is something you share with your ancestors and your kin and is a visual proof of your heritage and isolates you from people who don't share your heritage. Hmm maybe more significant than eye color.

I think it's the right kind of tool to use. The structural and violent racism we have today should have never been allowed to remain this bad for so long, and perhaps it was because the people with the power to change it didn't think it was their job to eliminate that behavior, like they had done enough. I find it disgusting that people like jeff5102 would call the teacher abusive just because some kids cried from being discriminated against for a little while during a school day, as a means of teaching them an important lesson about the impact of discrimination against others. I bet he doesn't give a damn about people who actually experience racism and discrimination on a daily basis. People who can't just wake up the next day and be told it was all just a social experiment. I completely agree with you, this is the right kind of tool to use. @@Inspirekidstoday They actually did a study on this, they ended up calling it stereotype threat (Aronson and Steele.) Because negative stereotypes get interiorized by black students, many will do poorly on tests when it is presented as a test of their skills. When the same test is presented only as part of the experiment, the black subjects had very similar scores to their white counterparts. I'm explaining it poorly here, but negative stereotypes definitely play a role.

I’m Japanese who goes to a community college in California. When the coronavirus spread into the world, my professor treated Asian including me as virus and he said go home to us. I came to the US before the things happened but the professor said “Chinese people spread the virus into the world. I was discriminated in SF because my name didn’t sound like American. I was discriminated because of you Asian. Don’t show me your faces.” When I heard that, I was so disappointed. I never thought a professor did such a fool thing for me. He is educator he should teach us that you can’t discriminate someone by their colors or races. But I found this. I was one of the racists. When he discriminated Asian people, I was like “I was Japanese and we were not like others. I didn’t bring virus to the US. Chinese did that!” After that, I was so ashamed of myself. I realized I was wrong by being discriminated.
There’s so much racism in this world. Some people don’t realize they are racist. I’ll share this video to my friends. I hope people will learn something from this video like me.

I’ve never seen anything so powerful. When Mrs Elliot first started with the children, seeing the reactions on the children’s faces I had silent tears. If only this would be a requirement for young children. It clearly shows in the end the children understand racism. Even with the adults, in the end of just an hour and a half I feel they understood. It’s sad that this teacher started this in her classroom around 1968 and it was never put into practice back then. Imagine how different the world would be today if it had been. It could start now and could make a difference going forward.

As an educator I can't help but be in awe of her. The ability to take chances like this is something very very few teachers would take. Anything that can potentially cause controversy, at least those topics not approved of, is something that is to be avoided at all costs. The freedom for a teacher to take this leap is where the real impactful lessons are learned. That of course is not to say that every teacher who wants to take a chance is as capable as her but giving the initiative to teachers is something I believe benefits children far more than any harm it could possibly do.

This is the first time I have ever seen this, but it’s not the first time I’ve heard of Jane Elliot, this woman is a pioneer, a genius, and although she refuses to take credit, she deserves one hell of a lot of credit for doing something that no other person at that time would even dare come close to, putting her career and her family in great danger, but she did it anyways knowing the risks. I honestly believe that every single student of that age should be forced to go through this exact same exercise. Can you imagine the world that would develop after a decade or so, if every single generation having to go through this, and learn firsthand what hatred and racism is truly about? We would develop a utopian society, but unfortunately, with so much hatred alive and well, I don’t see it happening, even though it’s the most simplest thing in the world to comprehend, fear and ignorance is preventing us from doing what we should have been doing for over a century, actually, since the birth of schooling. Hate is not something we are born with, it is something that we are taught, and if we can teach hate, then we can teach love and tolerance, and I do believe we can unteach hatred like Jane did in her classroom. This woman is beyond description, in the best possible way, she is exactly what every human being on earth should be, and what kills me the most it is so simple to comprehend what she’s trying to teach. I understand that she doesn’t like excepting compliments, because she is very correct that everyone should already know this, she shouldn’t have to be teaching it, but the sad reality is, it’s necessary now more than ever before, as centuries and centuries of hatred and anger only get worse and worse, turning neighbour against neighbor, country against country, until we will, unless something changes, completely destroy ourselves, and be the direct cause of our own extinction. Jane dedicated her entire life to preventing this, yet when I look on TH-cam and the amount of views her videos get, it’s pathetic. People posting stupid cat or dog videos get millions of hits, while her absolutely essential education techniques only get a couple of thousand. What the hell? She should be getting hundreds of millions of views, yet hatred remains strong, and that is something we cannot, and must not tolerate if we ever hope to survive as a species!
