    The 87s don't go out of calibration unless you drop something heavy on it and that's a maybe.
    This is what you pay for!!!!
    Over 90 percent of the 87s that go in for calibration by fluke never need adjusting!!!!

    • @bebsrepairbench5074

      What kind of electrician? It's a great meter but for doing residential electrical there are cheaper meters out there, such as the Brymen BM235, that will serve just as well. If it's commercial electrical or projects that will require a meter that has to calibrated annually, the 87V is what I recommend.

    • @bebsrepairbench5074
      @bebsrepairbench5074  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you mean using manual ranging for the ohms? Or how to set up the meter to measure ohms?

    • @trialnterror
      @trialnterror 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Beb's Repair Bench using auto range. A guy at my work I swear was trying to use the graph on the bottom and said he had 44kohms when it read 4.345 kohms on auto range.

    • @bebsrepairbench5074
      @bebsrepairbench5074  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@trialnterror I think I see what you mean. You always read the measurement with the follower as part of it. So if you only see the ohms symbol with no prefix, the indicated value is ohms, same for kohms and Mohms. The decimal never has to be mentally "shifted". As far as the bar graph, it doesn't really represent a numerical value. It's meant to show quick fluctuations in a signal, kind of like the old school "needle wiggle" in analog meters. It can also be used to show where you are in the current auto-range, so the further left the bar is, the closer you are to ranging down, and when it's almost "full", it's close to ranging up. Hope this helps!

    • @trialnterror
      @trialnterror 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Beb's Repair Bench that’s exactly what I thought. I don’t know why the guy I was working with thought he had to change it? The only thing I can think was he thought it was on Mohms and not K ohms . Because I was on auto range. This helps a lot. Just like you said the scale is just a quick representation of where I am.

      I would say no. If your looking for a DMM to work on motorcycles, a Fluke 88 would be better. It has an inductive coil attachment for RPMs. There are also many lower cost meters with this feature that would work just as well.

    I just bought a Fluke 287 how does this compare?

    • @bebsrepairbench5074
      @bebsrepairbench5074  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've never had the chance to play with one, but from what I've read your 287 is better in many ways, with a 50000 count display you'll have better resolution than the 87V's 20000 option. It also has PC connectivity if you need it, and the dot matrix display offers options an LCD could never hope to match, although oftentimes at the cost of being a battery hog. It also has AC+DC measurements, higher bandwidth, better accuracy........ I could keep going but if you check out this link Fluke lays it all out better than I can:
      www.fluke.com/en/products/electrical-testing/digital-multimeters/compare?selected=17,372,0

    • @Tejaye777
      @Tejaye777 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@bebsrepairbench5074 Yeah all those are the same pros and cons that I've read for the 287.The Fluke 87 is the most highly rated because of it's versatility and the fact that it's battery doesn't drain out so quickly.The 287 actually has more functionality but because of it's abysmal battery performance it's rating is much lower. The Fluke 87 rates 4.6 on Amazon and the Fluke 287 rates 3.8. Despite it's rating the Fluke 287 is a really attractive and solidly made multimeter which just feels very premium.

    • @bebsrepairbench5074
      @bebsrepairbench5074  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Tejaye777 I think a lot people just don't need all the bells and whistles the 287 offers so they go for the 87 with its more attractive price. Add to that the history of the 80 series and the trust people have in them and you've got a recipe for a cult following. Bottom line though is the 287 truly is a more capable meter, even it's hunger for batteries is offset by conveniently using AA batteries. This is just my opinion, formulated after I've had to change those pesky 9V battery connectors the 80 series use.

    Isn’t it true that fluke won’t honor the warranty on the meter if you did not purchase through an authorized dealer?

    • @meatballpower1135
      @meatballpower1135 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think they do honor it. I purchased 2015 edition fluke 289 used on Ebay. I had it sent to fluke to get calibrated. They performed repairs on it for free. Some of there meters have a life time warranty along as the meter is still in production. One it is not in production, the warranty is only good for 10 years. The best thing to do with any fluke meter is to register it on fluke.com.

    • @bebsrepairbench5074
      @bebsrepairbench5074  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't tried it personally, but I have heard other people have sent them in without a problem. I believe that if you send it to Fluke for calibration you pay for that, but any issues they find are fixed under warranty.

    • @meatballpower1135
      @meatballpower1135 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Every file meter I have purchased, besides my 87v, has been used and purchased off ebay. As soon as I get the meter, I go to flukes website and register the meter under me. I have a 289, 87v, 276 and a 189. All used except the 87v. All registered on fluke.com, all calibrated through fluke. No issues what so ever. The 289 had/has a problem with the capacitor, fluke replaced/repaired it for free. All flukes have a life time warranty, once the meter is not in production, a 10 year warranty starts.
