    My takeaway is this. For long-form video shooting, you can either buy the R5 + Ninja V + SSD Card + Adapter for around $4600 (in the US) or purchase a Canon C70 for $5500 (C70 uses SD cards). So you save around $900 and have a camera you can also use for still photography. Obviously the C70 has many more bells and whistles like internal NDs and XLR inputs, but if the R5 added C-Log 2 and 3 in a firmware update, it might make the R5 an attractive do-it-all solution for some people.

    • @AttiBear
      @AttiBear  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      At this day and age I find SD Cards more and more tedious. Video files are getting so big by now that you just don't want to use SD Cards anymore. The R5 can record to SD too but even with a Sandisk Extreme Pro it just takes for ever to transfer your files. CF Express of course is even faster than an SSD but also way more expensive. So in my opinion SSDs give you the best usability and performance while being the cheapest medium. I even guess that most people won't be using the C70 without an external recorder. Swapping all those SD Cards will become expensive too 😅

    Awesome video. I already own an Atomos V which I used with my Sony A7iii, but now definitely switching to Canon EOS R6 now that you removed the last reason I was holding back (overheating in longform shoots). WIth the new firmware 1.1.1, any 4k shooting I do in a run and gun situation will never be long enough to cause overheating. Thanks for making my decision easier!

    Thanks for all the info! Great video. I am upgrading to an R5 from an 90D and have been looking at external recording options. I am wondering if you have any advice for recording straight to an ssd without the use of an external monitor? I don’t necessarily need a monitor at the moment, but ssd’s are significantly cheaper than buying expensive CFexpress cards. Thanks for any advice you have and I hope you’re having a good day!

    My Ninja records a little more contrast and saturation than my R5 on its SD card. However, I set the Legalized option to Off. Is there a solution?

    Great concise summery Attire Bear. One question. I can't find how you chose between 8 and 10 bit in Clog. Can you please tell me how you got that option? Or I may not be getting that option?

    I know this is an old video, but with the release of the the new ninja from atomos, it now has the el zone and arri false colors. The only way to use those is if you turn off the legalize. According to the atomos manual those 2 options are only available for log footage

I have scoured TH-cam and cannot find an answer to this: do you know of a way to get a true clean HDMI out when using autofocus? No you can save photos and videos to it. But there are recording settings that only allow you you to write them to CF express

  • @ChristianCampo
    @ChristianCampo 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Maybe a stupid question but I place it anyway. In some blogger video you see that they record the video output plus the screen controls. So you get a recording of say a shooting where you see the model taking poses the eye-af catching the model and then the camera is taking the shot. Is that something you can also record with Atmos.....the video plus the liveview or viewfinder screen controls ?

    • @AttiBear
      @AttiBear  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Christian, you probably mean videos like the ones from froknowsphoto 😉. You need to select in the camera settings whether you want a clean output without menus or one with. Either you won't be able to record both at the same time within the Ninja V, but you could record the view with the menus to the Atomos and record internally what you are filming. This of course only works in Video mode not for Photos.

    Great video :) I've always been using Atomos recorders on all my cameras because you just can't work seriously with the tiny monitors on small DSLR bodies, and also my workflow is in ProRes. So the R5 has been the best camera I've ever used because I don't have to think about any potential overheating problems, or deal with the horrible h265.

    • @AttiBear
      @AttiBear  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can't damage the camera this way unlike the sony cameras. Overheat Control only means the camera will decrease resolution while in standby to reduced the load on its internals. The R5 will still automatically turn itself off like usually.

      You can record 7:30 minutes long clips in 4k120 (30 minutes limit once turned in 30p) without overheating in firmware 1.1.1 and you can do at least 2 clips like that one after the other. That's over 1 hour of actual footage once slowed down in 24p so I never tested more. When I do short (realistic) clips in 120p (10 sec to 1 minute), there is absolutely no overheating ever. I guess that's why nobody is talking about it.

    Hello, Thank you for the great video. This is by far the best video I've seen on that topic 🙂.
    I have one question and one problem.
    The question: with firmware 1.5.0. the "Overheat control" in red menu page 8 is replaced by a "Low resolution stand-by" (translated from the french camera menu): I deactivated it. Do you do the same?
    The problem: I have now two R5 (with firmware 1.5.0 and exact same video settings) and two Ninja V (well one of them is the new V+) with the exact same WD Blue SSDs. During tests before a shooting with the settings of your video (except I was not in Log), one of the R5 constantly overheated after approximately 50 to 60 minutes. Have you ever heard of that and would you know what is not functioning?
    Thank you very much in advance,
    David.

      it's hard to say. I noticed sometimes overheating can be cause by the most stupidest little things on set. I'm always making sure to not lock the screen to the body and i keep all the connector seals open, so that additional heat has an easier way of dissipating.
      How ever it's hard to say, why two same exact cameras behave so differently. Did the latest updates bring any relief?

    Hey thanks for that video!
    I'm having some issues with my R5 / Ninja V when recording 4K 60p (59.94p). The Ninja V is dropping frames (skippy icon) which means the recording stops and restarts every 30-50 seconds or so... Sometimes it does work for longer periods of time, sometimes it doesn't. It feels like at buffer (SSD) or HDMI cable issue but I have an AngelBird SSD and an Atomos 4K 60p HDMI 2.0a cable which are absolutely capable of recording this correctly... Formatted the hard drive that didn't change anything.
    No issue when recording 4K HQ 24p (23.98p)...
    This is driving me crazy. Any idea what might that be?

      Hey Simon, if you are looking for a dedicated cinema camera, the C70 is an incredible option. However if you want something more mobile that it is capable of taking incredible stills the R5 is a no brainer. 8K combined with my cooling hack will give you a viable recording time, but put's a significant extra load on your editing gear. 4K Fine recorded on the Atomos on the other hand is recorded in h264 and therefore super easy to edit 😉. No you don't! It's cheaper than buying all the necessary CF Express Cards. You actually save money from the moment you need more than 500GBs of storage.

    this is bollox you make such a complicated setup just to save those few quid and get a decent video camera. Interview stand youtube videos this is yeah not that bad but for a complicated shoot useless. Especially gimbal use.

      I see it differently. Everybody has their own workflow and needs and there are more than enough reasons to work with an external monitor (easy to work with h264 codecs, false colours, focus peaking, safe zones etc). I for example record mostly on my own when I'm in my studio and i can remotely trigger recording, check my composition, audio levels, focus and light settings without the need to run to my camera after every take. But also this video wasn't about whether you should use an external monitor or not, it was about how to use it properly. Anyhow thank you for your opinion.

    Not relevant…why would you record 2h as a video timelapse! Knowing the camera has the timelapse option and won’t hit at all and you can get higher res than 4k!!
    No one on earth will record a 2h video in 4k and if you are shooting an event a talk show a wedding or whatever believe me you won’t record 4k, if you do you’ll have the budget for broadcast camera that shoot 4k!
    People should stop doing not true videos cause it’s “trending” and give false info for learning people!!

      That's quite the ignorant view. Just because you don't use a feature in a certain way, it doesn't mean other people don't. Also if I want to prove that it works I'll have to show you the actual footage otherwise it never happened and I'm certain you don't want to watch a two hour long video filled with heat readings...

      @@AttiBear And if other use it, it doesn't mean they are doing it right, you are giving tips and the right tips for long video (2hours) is to do timelapse otherwise its useless and you know that is true. I did not say that what you said is not true.

      @@AttiBear Plus, you are shooting building if you were shooting an actual work of yours like a workshop or anything that needs 2 hours full record in 4k...then i wouldnt be commenting the same. I have shot a 30mins 4k fashion show and recorded internal and it did not heat, actually it never did! Having external recorder have lot of other benefits that can really help others....
