I love how the song starts out with a sound-the-alarm vibe, and transforms into a call for unity towards the end. From something totally negative to something totally positive. Musically, the change can be seen from the shift from a minor to major harmony towards the end of the song. Pure genius. Plus the choreography is killer. I had the very same reaction as yours when I read how deep and meaningful the lyrics were. It's not often a musical artist had this effect on me, but these girls ate truly something else. Welcome to the fascinating world of AG! 😊
Atarashii Gakko No Leaders (New School Leaders) were formed in 2015 by Asobisytem. Mizyu (the one with two ponytails) had already worked with Asobisystems as a back up dancer to Kyary Pamyu Pamyu and they brought in Rin, Kanon and Suzuka to join her. They do all their own choreography and also create dances for other groups. They have some of the most original choreo I've seen and are almost an anti-idol group as their motto is "With individuality and freedom I'm going to stick out" and they sing about some challenging themes and have appeared at Pride events. In 2020/21 they joined 88rising to break into the US market and their song "Otona Blue" was a big social media hit in Japan in 2023. They were a big success at Coachella 2024 and are now in the middle of their first World tour and will be in the US in the next couple of months. in "Tokyo Calling" AG are singing about the difficulties of living in modern Japan and how it can seem pointless and without meaning. They use imagery from old Japanese superhero and monster movies and cast themselves as superheros to motivate people to break out of their rut and move forward. If you'd like to react to more AG just search on "ATARASHII GAKKO! - OTONABLUE / THE FIRST TAKE" and for a very new song "AG FOREVER SISTERS Debut at Coachella 20240414" is pure disco.
AG is 🔥 their songs are always touching on social and general societal issues. To top it off they design crazy choreography, music is eclectic and they ooze personality, oh and they kick ass live. Koi Geba, Seishun Wo Kirisaku Hado and Otona Blue are great follow ups for you.
In Japan, they are in the 3rd decade of what they call the "Lost Decades" described as stagnant economy and culture. The young people are realizing something has to change., but change comes slow in Japan.

Every time I watch Atarashii gakko! perform, it's a serotonin and endorphins rush. They are chemists.
