Thanks much for the video. I know how to sew but have never made a quilt. This is just what I needed to hear, the basic tools for getting started. Also, you are a gifted presenter in that you convey information clearly and to the point. I will definitely watch more of your videos.
BRILLIANT VIDEO! Your first video is awesome. I was worried I would find someone who would talk right over head as I am someone who knows NOTHING about quilting but I love the final products so I hope to make one of my own. What I love about your video is it is very well lit. No dim lighting there. Also really like the camera work, straight on, over head, it doesn't matter, there is no jerky camera movements to make your audience seasick, and everything from you to your favorite products are centered within frame. Finally, you are very articulate. You speak at a reasonable speed, and you pronounce things very well. Okay, first episode down, I will watch your next videos. I am hoping you will be the one to carry me through to the confidence I need to make my own quilt. Thank you for the enlightenment.
Thank you so much for this. My grandmother passed away recently, and I'm still trying to figure out what all her patterns mean and tools are. This helps a lot, and you are very good at talking to the camera!
My grandmother has lost her vision and I inherited the contents of her vast quilting studio. I sew but have never quilted. How is your progress? Did you become a quilter?
Those are nice tools and I have most of them now for sewing my quilt with and will be looking for the items which I don't have. I have two new Singer sewing machines to work with and was about to begin with putting together some pieces my grandmother had already cut out, but never got to put together before she got sick and eventually died. Someone went into my old house where it was stored and took the box containing them and now I will start from scratch with making everything and putting the quilt together.
Can you please update your recommended tools websites? Just starting to watch your first episode. So far I love listening to you explaining the tools. Can't wait to start making a quilt soon. I just hope my sewing machine that I bought a long time ago still works. Cross my fingers.
Start from the beginning, please! Is quilting putting pieces together or do you start with a big blanket and sew these patches together? I guess I’m looking for a good definition of “what precisely is a quilt?”
I know this is a late reply to your question, but I hope it's helpful to you. I learned recently that a quilt is a type of blanket made from a process that involves: step 1, PIECING fabric together (that's sewing little pieces of fabric together to make bigger pieces, and then sewing those bigger pieces to other pieces to continue making the fabric you are sewing larger and larger). Step 2 is to SANDWICH your pieced top (sometimes now refered to as your quilt top). Sandwiching means that you have placed your top on batting, and put that on top of the fabric you are using for your back. So you now have three parts, your top, batting, and the back. Step 3 is QUILTING. This is when you sew the three pieces together. There are so many ways to do this. You can sew "in the ditch" which is one common method. This is when you sew your sandwich together by sewing along any of your seams on your quilt top. You want to have these stitches covering a good portion of the sandwich so that all three pieces of the sandwich stay together through the years of using your finished quilt. Step 4: BINDING. This is when you sew something like bias tape along the edges of the quilt to finish the edges of your quilt. After these 4 steps, you now have a finished quilt. I hope this is helpful. What I think you might really be asking is what is the difference between quilting and piecing. I hope this helps explain that a little more. And if not, maybe it at least helps you figure out what to Google!!!
Hi. Im.new at this quilting. Thanks for the video lesson. I tried to accessing the links for the tools and the kit but it's not working. It days dynamic link not found. Can you repost the new link if you changed it? Thank you
Can you give me a list of needles and thread for quilting size? t Thankyou. I enjoy watching your shows. I've learned how to make a log cabin quilt watching and learning from you.
Hi Donna, that quilt was actually loaned to us from Riley Blake Fabrics. They have a free PDF pattern on their website here: www.rileyblakedesigns.com/media/uploads/Free_Quilting_Projects/2015/Every_Which_Way.pdf
I'm tackling my first quilt! But help!! I bought a kit and can't manage such a big bulk of fabric...my cutting table is 24"x36" and fabric spills over even when folded! I accidentally cut 2 strips but realized I didn't cut from Width! There's supposed to be 4-3"x70" strips, to be used for the border, which I can tear along the length BUT I don't know how to get there cuz the whole sheet is approx 90"Wx140"L....so half of sheet will be for the 70" strips but I cannot manage such bulk AND cut the other half for the other 5 different piles of cuttings for rest of quilt. Please tell me you understand... I mean did I explain it properly?
I have one of the 6" rulers and it sure doesn't grip like you say. I find it slips all over the place to the point where I'm about ready to put some kind of grip on the underside. Maybe I got a lemon of a ruler. Omnigrid is a good name so I'm hoping I can fix this one as I use it all the time for squaring up. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge. I know I appreciated it. Have a great day!!
@Cheryl Taylor Maybe by now you've found an answer to this but there are two kinds of Omni rulers, one that says Omnigrid and the other Omnigrip. Obviously, the latter is the grippy one.
@@castledykesfarm3396 Thank you so much for your tip. I figured out what my problem is. Example: You have a four patch an you're trying to square it up? The middle vertical seam causes the ruler to wobble so I'm almost never accurate. My worst times are with 1/2 square triangles, but I've discovered "Quilt in a Day" Squaring up 9 1/2" ruler. It's awesome. I'll definitely look for the Omnigrip though. I STILL have to square up those4 patches! LOLOL Wow, can't believe that initial comment was 3 years ago!
Thank you for the great video. Going through everything that is needed to get started is great. I don't know how to use a babylock. And, I don't have one. So i'll get what I can out of these.
Best beginner's video I've seen without all the extra talking and bs!
Love it, thank you!
Thanks for your tutorials. Happy Teacher's Day
Love your videos! Thanks for covering the basics so thoroughly. People need the basics explained so they can understand them and be successful.

Can you include a list of equipment that you are recommending in this video?
Hi Rachel - We have updated the description of the video to include a list of recommended products to get you started. Thank you!
Hi Rachel, how's your day going with you?
Love your video. Thank you for the great information. The link for the Getting Started Bundle no longer works.
Hi Diana, how's your day going with you?
Nice information, but "Mam" give information about sewing machine please
That’s a lot of money for a first quilt!
Thank you but you need to slow down. I felt like you were rushing your talking.
Guess it's a good thing this is recorded, and allows you the ability to pause and rewind if needed.
If you touch 3 dots upper right corner you can slow down or speed up play back.
As a non native speaker of English I feel as I am in a race while I'm listening. I'm sure there is a lot of useful information going on but ...
