It's both raw and detailed at the same time, but what I like most is hearing you asking the same questions and falling down the rabbit hole - becoming a struggler in real time like most of us did. I love this format of videos for berserk, especially when you read the actual passages from the managa its great. Please keep them coming hearing your predictions as you read through is very intresting and you seem to already understand much about this storys themes very well. However there is so much more you couldnt even dream of yet i think you will fall in love with this story like so many of us so thanks. The art is also amazung if you like the art in the first Arc it only gets better and better some of the panels in later arcs are straigh up like paintings of the most incredible scenes. Also side note, definitely check out the souls series especially dark souls 1 and 3 if you havent already, as you mentioned many berserk references and they are amazing games overall. Very unforgiving and dark like berserk.

I have read the whole manga and if Miura was really just making things up as he goes at this point in time, its incredible how it still connects to the rest of the story and Guts' past. Shows how great of a mangaka he is.
First chapter is kind of an extended pilot, written before Miura had a full idea of what to make his story into. I think a lot of it needs to be reworked in order to fit properly with Golden Age. Characterization is a bit wonky in parts. Still, a tale of a man becoming Hellbound against his will and losing almost everyone who ever mattered to him in his life, only for him to keep fighting in the hopes of finding peace, is the most incredible story you could make, especially since Berserk in particular isn't afraid to show the worst of what humanity can do to each other. You can't appreciate the light without knowing the darkness exists alongside.

If this is just part 1, you're in for a LONG journey. I had been staying up to date with it since earlier this year. It took a while but it was one of the most undertaking readings I have ever experienced not just from the dark subject matter but how it comments on the struggles of humanity. All mixed in with a sort of tragedy that would be well fit in Shakespeare or Greek classics. I doubt you'll get through one particular arc: Lost Children. Or at least I think you'd have trouble showing some of its... contents. But there's a reason this manga is held to be the most peak thing out there, not just in storytelling but in what it has to offer for the human experience. Do keep reading.
There are plenty of stories that have just as much if not greater impact than Berserk! A few notables ones include Astro Boy by Osamu Tezuka, Dragon Ball by Akira Toriyama, or Slam Dunk by Takehiko Inoue.
Yeah, I don't see how one could view that first scene as anything but a reference to Conan. It's beat for beat the same scene basically. Man, that first Conan movie was so good.

Yes things like Arnold's body, and the spirits, dogs, and the relationships, and some scenes and shots clearly influenced the same in berserk. But both are basically Nietzsche inspired stories. And have a lot of the same elements and explore a lot of the same concepts. Conan even starts with a Nietzsche quote.

That intro chapter made me think of wicked city where it opened with the main character picking up a chick at the bar, taking her back home and sleeping with her. She then reveals herself to be a spider like demon who attacks him and ends up scampering down the wall of the building after the attack fails. It definitely grabbed my attention as a kid. Ive been wanting to get into the berserk manga for a few years now. Im still trying to finish up blade of the immortal but berserk is next on my list. PS: ive also heard Ash from evil dead was a big influence for the guts character. (Probably moreso in look then personality)
When I bought the first deluxe from berserk and read it I was excited I just couldn't afford to buy the whole deluxe and I didn't want to read it online now I got 4 more deluxe for my birthday so I'm extremely happy to start reading it I'll gradually buy the others over time.
the best part of gut's journey is the quieter times where the characters bounce off of each other whilst the angst grows knowing that the peace is temporary

Love anything Berserk related, Miura did an amazing job coming up with this without even a plan its like a miracle. You should check out the 1997 Anime its the best anime adaptation of Berserk thus far.
I found out that You get the true enjoyment form Berserk after you have read it couple of times.I don't know its kind of therapy for me (I swear I am not ill) there is always this bittersweet and fond nostalgia in it (even tho I read it in 2020).Constant Suffering but a little hope. When you read Black Swordsman you are pained to see Guts in this psychopathic state. In Golden Age, You feel at home with the characters but also know the inevitable that will come but regardless the story still is able to create a bliss of hope. Lost Children is when you feel fear for and of Guts.Rather than Healing it just increases the pain. Conviction is where hope starts to come.You can see guts finally finding a purpose. Makes you happy. Falcom War is when The Healing starts.You see guts finding a new family. You look back at the days of Black Swordsman and you see now. You see the transformation of a man going from absolutely insane to introspective gentle giant. You start to love the new characters,Farnese, Witch, Serpico etc. Fantasia increases that bond.It creates a parallel between Guts and Griffith. Where Griffith makes his followers through trickery Guts does it naturally.Although The ending pains me. Knowing that Miura couldn't finish his story. But oh well he did create the greatest story ever so that's something right?
Overall it was good however i feel you've misrepresented a few scenes, for instance you've made it sound as if guts was torturing the count because it brought the daughter pain, when in actuality he doesn't even see the daughter he's just reveling in the counts despair. The second to memory was his fight with Zondark, you've made the scene sound as if guts was struggling against him "forces Guts against the wall" while the entire fight was just Guts toying with Zondark, you can even see in guts expression that he seems disappointed that this was all he had to give. Third scene was that you said the ghost tried to take over his body, when it was around a dozen ghosts. There were a few othe misrepresentations however I've forgotten them and dont want to watch the full video again just to note em down. However it was still a good video.

Having watched AlmightyLoli's videos on it, it's nice to have another perspective on it, especially from someone who has never read it before looking forward to future videos on it also keep the daemon thing in mind for stuff much later on, don't want to spoil too much but it does come up again
For me it started with the TRASH $suicideboys AMV, I was like “this anime looks cool” I than came across AlmightyLoli who I had watched before for hes spec ops the line video, the rest is history. Others have probably said this by now, but "dæmon" means something like "supernatural messenger" or "spirit that acts on behalf of and on the orders of a supernatural being", in this case the Count was able to fight Guts vicariously through Zondark, and speak directly to him once Zondark was destroyed. What you define dæmon as is more like the Jinn. Dæmons specifically must provide some service, acting on behalf of something else. I read somewhere that in the original pagan Greek context, dæmon meant "divine messenger" (in the more general sense of "running messages" i.e. "performing tasks that require one to go out" rather than the narrow sense of delivering communication). Technically, this definition implies that angels are in fact a special type of dæmon, and one third of them became demons when they rebelled against God. Perhaps the change in spelling has something to do with their change in allegiance/function; or perhaps many supernatural phenomena were attributed to dæmons at the time of the Early Church, and since the Church would have perceived them as being from dark spiritual forces, the two concepts would have melded together. (Of course this would have been aided by the fact that "angel" was the preferred term for spiritual messengers acting on behalf of God, and thus "dæmons" acting on behalf of the pagan gods would be seen exclusively as evildoers, rather than generically as "messenger spirits".) Berserk is my favorite manga, so I'm always happy to see more people get into it, can't wait for you to get to the lost children arc which is a personal favorite for a lot of people including mine.
About the word "Daemon"; The word actually refers to something kind of like "destiny" or even "soul". You could even think of it is as being like the "true inner self" in contrast to the "ego" or "psyche". What this (probably) implies is that humans and other beings in the berserk world have such "daemons" as well, though they probably look like something very different than evil demon daemons - unless ofc humans dont actually have souls in the berserk universe. Idk, this is my first encounter with the series. Actually... Puck does kinda seem to serve the role of Guts' Daemon, doesnt he? Hmmmmm
Many different things will be explained and given some interesting backgrounds and explanations to the world and Guts himself, like why he is the way he is and who he used to be.
To make ANY sense out of parts like the opening seeming out place...I think we need to consider how young Miura was and how little planning was done for the rest of the story or characters. Think about how different you are from 20-30. Nearly two different people! This story was written over this guys entire life! If the vibes change, imagine how much the author is changing as it's written. This makes Long form serialized manga so much different from how we usually look at storytelling.

Others have probably said this by now, but "dæmon" means something like "supernatural messenger" or "spirit that acts on behalf of and on the orders of a supernatural being", in this case the Count was able to fight Guts vicariously through Zondark, and speak directly to him once Zondark was destroyed.
What you define dæmon as is more like the Jinn. Dæmons specifically must provide some service, acting on behalf of something else. I read somewhere that in the original pagan Greek context, dæmon meant "divine messenger" (in the more general sense of "running messages" i.e. "performing tasks that require one to go out" rather than the narrow sense of delivering communication). Technically, this definition implies that angels are in fact a special type of dæmon, and one third of them became demons when they rebelled against God. Perhaps the change in spelling has something to do with their change in allegiance/function; or perhaps many supernatural phenomena were attributed to dæmons at the time of the Early Church, and since the Church would have perceived them as being from dark spiritual forces, the two concepts would have melded together. (Of course this would have been aided by the fact that "angel" was the preferred term for spiritual messengers acting on behalf of God, and thus "dæmons" acting on behalf of the pagan gods would be seen exclusively as evildoers, rather than generically as "messenger spirits".)
Also, look up how "dæmon" is used in computer science, which is mostly where I run into the term. I hope my half-remembered etymology without sources has been somewhat useful. I think I left off somewhere in the early part of the Golden Age (as far as reading goes, at least; obviously I've watched the anime - multiple times, in fact), and this made me want to go back to reading Berserk, so thanks for this video.

About the word "Daemon";
The word actually refers to something kind of like "destiny" or even "soul". You could even think of it is as being like the "true inner self" in contrast to the "ego" or "psyche".
What this (probably) implies is that humans and other beings in the berserk world have such "daemons" as well, though they probably look like something very different than evil demon daemons - unless ofc humans dont actually have souls in the berserk universe. Idk, this is my first encounter with the series.
Actually... Puck does kinda seem to serve the role of Guts' Daemon, doesnt he? Hmmmmm

While not as dark as Berserk I'd rank the manga Front Mission: Dog Life & Dog Style up there as well, might be worth a look if you like mecha.

To make ANY sense out of parts like the opening seeming out place...I think we need to consider how young Miura was and how little planning was done for the rest of the story or characters. Think about how different you are from 20-30. Nearly two different people! This story was written over this guys entire life! If the vibes change, imagine how much the author is changing as it's written. This makes Long form serialized manga so much different from how we usually look at storytelling.
