  • My Donut Peach Tree is still dormant well into Spring. Turns out it may be because it hasn't received enough cold temperature hours to break down it's growth inhibiting hormone, which serves to keep it dormant during Winter months. Peaches can need anywhere from 200-1000 hours below 45 degrees F. (7C.) to break dormancy.
Another cause can be over watering, causing root rot. I dug it up to check on it and thankfully it didn't have any signs of root rot. Though it did have very little new root growth, so it's likely to that it simply hasn't received enough cold temperature hours to break it's dormancy.

To force dormancy you water less and put it in a shaded, colder spot and fertilise less.
To wake it up you do the opposite, water more, give nutrients, and use not so cold water or the cold root temp will set it back. Extreme sunlight can be a little too much, but place it in 6 h sunlight at least, preferably 8 unless you live in a very hot zone.
If a potted plant you can take it in the shower, give it a good drench, and let it stay inside the house until it wakes up.

Very interesting I too just got a peach tree and it’s supposed to be super cold tonight so I was thinking about putting it out side to see if it will bring it out of dormancy fingers crossed ðŸĪž I hope yours comes out of dormancy too. Plus I heard that if you cut it back that too can make it start to grow leaves said Restoring Eden Nursery on You-Tube Hope this helps

It eventually broke it's dormancy. Around the end of spring if I recall. I was worried it had root rot and dug it up to check on it. But it had barely put on any new root growth. I just had to be patient I suppose. There's definitely some chance my selection of peach variety isn't best suited for my climate if it takes that long for it to break dormancy. This year though it's showing signs of waking up as we go into Spring so we'll see. Maybe that initial time it took longer because it was getting established.
