I dislike 4 series styling including M4. Really like 3 series styling and absolutely hate the fact that M3 changed the front to closely resemble 4. They f it up imo
As for M2 I love it apart from the square corners of the rear bumper which to me are slightly too large in general and definitely stick out too much

Had an F87c for two years. Loved it, but it was not perfect. The 6MT is not great and the engine is detuned too much in the top end. Hated the G87 when it came out. Two yers later and after seeing a few in person, I’m sold. Ordering in January

I don't fully understand the critique because the manual was crap paired with S55 also in F87 comp. I owned one. In fact, a few owners I trust think that it's better overall in G87. S58 has bigger turbos and has a higher boost threshold, it's not because of gearing. M cars and M engines are always have less daily driveability and focus on track performance and you need to be "on" it. If people think S58 is soft off boost they should go back and drive an S65 V8. This is just reality, you will not get 500 HP out of a 3.0L 6 cyl with turbos the size of N55.

@ yes it is broadly true, the turbo S engines have bigger turbos and less torque at low rpm and the old NA engines are high strung, short geared, and also need to be revved out. I’ve owned several.

100% agree about the manuals... i owned a f80 manual (and drove a f87 manual) and the manual is def worse than the one in the g platforms. and that manual fits the vibe of the g platform cars better as well... the f platform was kind of meh tbh. hated the dead zone steering and inability to properly put the power down. plus they weren't fast... will take my g80 and g87 over my old f87 6 speed and f87 CS any day of the week.

The new M2 has grown on me a bit, and i've seen some nicely modded ones in my area. I appreciate the boxy styling that BMW tried with it, however they majorly fell short with the rear end and those two "butt cheek" elements. Also I know modern cars are heavy, but the G87 M2 weighs within the ballpark of a E63 M6 which had a V10 and the same seating/door configuration.

Owned a G87 M2 8 speed auto. It was a freight train. Pulling to illegal speeds with a small press of the throttle... Just too heavy and didn't dance around like the original. The steering is too numb, and there is little communication until you hit the limit.

I agree. I never gave the M2 a second look until the G87 M2 came out. I fell in love with the looks immediately and bought a new 2024. The bulging fenders, the angry front end was wonderful. For once BMW built a car with radical looks. Now the M3/M4 front end is so ugly. Chris Harris is so right about the G87 M2 and Thomas is so wrong. Why make BMW's look like every other BMW? The G87 M2 will someday be the car everyone drools over, just like the E30 M3.

Love TH but my they tried the manual M2 on the road and the auto on the track - which seems the wrong way round. But ultimately the ‘hate’ stems from the looks. Personally I like it but I cannot get past the beaver teeth on the M4. One of the car designers said that good design is not about attractive or ugly and I cannot agree with that. Tom analisis of G87 Design is incorrect in my opinion , he said proportions are wrong , proportions of the car are independent from Design clues and intentions , in this case , long hood , short front overhand , low roof, rear moved cabin, long rear overhang are always the desire proportions and are the right choice for a sports car , rear low roof is not functional for rear passenger, but help the silluett to look better , as the car is perceive as more coupe or two seater profile type

The S58 in the new M2 will feel dead at lower rpm , compression ratio is dropped from 10.2 to 9.6 compared to the previous N/S55 engines, to worsen this problem if it runs the 6 speed manual you’re stuck with 2 ratios less, S58 is better for my driving style higher output at a later rpm

The F87M2 has a nicer front end and the rear end looks slightly better than the G87 M2. The G87 M2 has by far a nicer side profile.. I always found the rear end side profile of the F87 M2 too stubby. The G87 M2 has more road presence compared to the F87 M2 which seems to just blend in with other cars around it. Like many I hated the looks of the G87 M2, but once I lowered my G87 M2 and added spacers.. the looks started to really grow on me. I get Thom's point but at the same time I understand why BMW engineered the G87 the way they did, and why I think it will be a better car for most people most of the time. People buying the M2 aren't normally people who have a garage, it is, after all, the budget M car, an intro to the brand, and in some respect needs to be able to do everything. Being able to have something that doesn't beat you up as a daily while still having tremendous bite is the art of the modern sports car, and something I feel that BMW executed perfectly. @@Bmwstephen If you only drive on the street save the money and get the F87. But the G87 is better once you start to push hard. The ZF8 speed has much shorter gear spacing than the DCT which in F8x gen had too wide ratios. This allows the bigger turbo on the s58 to be spooled faster and more often assuming the driver knows the simple skill of choosing the right gear. The cooling system on the G87 is also much improved. The G87 oil temp often goes up after getting off the track. But the chassis is the real improvement. Its got lots of wheel travel and compliance yet doesnt fall apart once you start to push. Its very impressive. It almost feels like Magnetic Ride Control on higher end GM and ferraris. Unlike the F87 the G87 has amazing traction for a front engined rear drive car. No they don't, I can't sit behind my 5'8" friend without my legs being amputated beneath ankles.

@@jkliao6486 Yes they do.. I'm 5'7 and in my seating position can sit people that are about 6ft ish in my G87 M2.. It's not the most comfortable but no need for them to amputate their legs.

@@patc8653 Look, first off, 5'7" is definitely on the smaller side. Second, when you say about 6', your friends are at most 5'10" because otherwise you would use the word "over" rather than "about". Combining those two, and given that I'm 6'1" bare foot, it's fair to say we have the same experience, except you are exaggerating a little bit about both you and your friends height in your original comment.
