    Stern Pinball started in 1977, with releases such as Stingray/Seawitch/Cheetah which were all electromechanical.

    Awesome vid, man. ^.^ TBH, I’ve been planning to add in a pinball machine in my own home to have fun and relax. Also, I do plan to get a couple for my upcoming game room, but unfortunately, not only I’m still rookie in understanding arcades, but I’m pretty much dealing with financial issues. However; while I’m finding a solution to get that taken care of, I made a plan what do first and take it very slowly than rushing it it financial choices is the important key. Also, after watching this, I’ve decided to not only just get my first pinball, which will be Stern’s The Walking Dead since it is my all-time favorite TV series and pinball theme, but also take some time to game on with it while learning how the machine operates before handling more than one. So, thanks for the tip, dude.

    Working with both EM and SS I like EM better they are in my opinion more reliable.
    And they are also way cheaper then a SS.
    For one EM's have no boards so if something shorts out it will blow a fuse find where the short is get rid of it and pop in another fuse and good to go.
    With solid state machines you could not only blow the fuse but it could take out one or more the electronic boards in the head.
    The key though is keeping a machine clean and kept clean so that it lasts a long time.

    Good information. Now a video about much older machines than these? I found a electro mechanical machine the shop wants $300 for but it has no too glass and it has been outside for quite a while. I've been warned it would take thousands to get it working again.

    • @HomeLeisureDirect
      @HomeLeisureDirect  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Christopher. We don't sell machines that are older than 1990, simply because they are fairly well worn, difficult to repair, parts can be hard to find and there isn't much demand for them from customers. I would steer clear of any machine that has been outside with no glass. It will end up driving you mad trying to fix it and you'd probably never get it working. Much better trying to find a great example to start with - compare it to buying a car that has been sat for years and is rusted through with parts missing that are tough to find.

    Speaking of dealers, from what I remember the issue with difficulty of gameplay was that if the arcade purchased directly from the manufacturer, the game would be stuck on an extremely difficult level of play. If they paid the money to buy from a dealer, the game's difficulty was playable. This killed the industry for children, including Showbiz pizza.

    • @StephanieManley
      @StephanieManley 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you can change the level of difficulty on a pinball machine, or at least my STTNG you can select options to make it easier for the average player.

  • @PinBallReviewerRepairs
    @PinBallReviewerRepairs 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I disagree with Electro-Mechanicals being less reliable.
    At least with EM's you do not have to worry about electronic boards frying and having to spend hundreds of dollars on a new board for a SS.
    With an EM you find the short then replace the fuse and you are flipping again.
    I work on all pinball machines including 1930's pins love em all not just the latest pinball out there.

    This video states that only limited edition pinball machines are meant to be sold to collectors. From what I understand, though, it is the availability of a "free play" mode that is the technical issue, and anything bought from a dealer should be set up for home use. This is one of only 2 dealers that I know of, the other is The Pinball Company in Missouri.

    • @StephanieManley
      @StephanieManley 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know if I would agree that the nicer models are only sold to collectors. I have seen a few LEs and SE at a few arcades.

      Being highly mechanical machines, things can go wrong with them from time to time, but the most common thing you'll find is either balls getting stuck or lights maybe going out. Even then though, the machine has systems and designed in a certain way to try and mitigate these things from happening. When it comes to fixing more in depth problems them, you can either learn the skills yourself (it helps if you have some tools and can solder, and there are lots of guides online) or you can get in touch with us and we'll be able to put you in contact with someone local to you who may be able to help get you up and running again. :)

    Anybody know anyone making new pinball machines that are classic style with the pre 1975 design?

    • @HomeLeisureDirect
      @HomeLeisureDirect  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The closest we've seen in recent years is some of the games STERN has been releasing, though they tend not to be produced on the same scale as the modern day ones. Games like "Whoa Nellie!" and to a lesser extent The Beatles (which uses a 1980 playfield layout) would probably be the kinds of things you're looking for. Hope this helps!

    Chicago gaming company which worked on the remakes are great. I haven't found medieval madness but cactus canyon is one of my favorites. When the 66 batman stern game came out I started to see new things were still being made but I didn't know how often. It wasn't until about 2 years ago I started going to more pinball/arcade spots. The old are fun and more original but now games have screens and constant programming updates. Stern has that insider connected progress system too.

      @HomeLeisureDirect  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Daniel, pinball is entirely a game of skill, and one that anyone can get better at with enough practice! How difficult a game is depends on how the owner sets it up. They can choose to make it harder if they want to provide more of a challenge, or easier if they just want to flip around and have some fun. Ultimately, it's up to you how you want to use your machine. :)

      Stern Electronics (80's) then Data East, then sold to SEGA in the early 90's, then re-bought by Gary Stern 5 years later (ironic when you think) who changed it to the modern Stern we now today, same CEO since then for all those companies. Respect to Gary who chose to keep pinball alive in the early 2000's when it was clearly ALMOST dead.
      JJP are basically machines made with Bally/WMS parts since the company made an agreement and bought some certificates from Planetary Pinball Supply which is the official supplier for spare parts of Bally/WMS machines. Respect to Jack Guarnieri who chose to create a new pinball company on a risky market and succeed in it !
      Heighway Pinball brand is dead now... However there is still maybe an hope that some investors buy what's left to reform an assembly line but I doubt it. Say goodbye to the promising Alien pinball machine (they've made some but it's basically over now as the licence will expire)..
