The Dearborn whoop is a legend these days. As kids, they were so creepy. You can hear all the sirens throughout the city winding down at the end. Embarrassingly, I know where every siren is at. The Hi Lo that Dearborn did for snow emergencies was equally creepy.
@parrthd1 Just cause Federal made the Thunderbolt does not make the 2001 good. The 2001 is very high pitched which means that the sound it produces has poor structure penetration and does not carry as far as the lower pitched Whelens or ASC T-128 sirens. Not to mention that Whelen has more signals which means that firecalls or different emergencies could be easily differentiated. Airhorn is popular for firecalls while hi-lo is popular for nuclear emergencies. In short, 2001s suck.
there used to be a whelen at a school down the street from my grandma just like this except it was twice as tall. i remember peeking my head over the backyard fence and seeing the elementary school with that siren next to it. i was over there once and then i was like, 5 and the sirens did their whoop tone. i thought it was the coolest thing ever. i forget about the siren and a week later i look over the fence and it was gone. all that remains is the filled up hole that the pole rested in.
8 years later (present day 2013) i saw a pole with an antenna and siretone cabinet about 1/8 of a mile from its original location. i look up in hope and what do i see? ANOTHER 2001! so that was heartbreaking. i will admit i will miss that siren. a siren like that is on hines drive in westland. i will never forget the whoop and hi-lo. long live whelen!
Its got to do with the Sound Cards in the motherboard. These older Whelens had these common tones which is the factory setting. In the early 1990s, Whelen upgrated their sirens and lower the Hz level to 460 which carries the sound further. If you take a look at the video response, you can see that my Whelen 3016 does exactly the same thing cause this siren and my 3016 were both made by Whelen the same year.
This siren was distinct, very loud, and you always could hear it and knew what it meant. The new ones they have now are hard to hear and sound like Dearborn's EMS vehicles half the time, so I don't react hardly the same.
When I worked at Oakwood Common we were in the middle of several of them, staggered on top of each other sounded so amazing, like Star Trek. Whoopwhoopwhoopwhoop.... whoophwhoopwhoopwhoop....
Yes. I live in Dearborn. You could hear almost the whole city sounding off. Best system I know of. When the 2001s were installed it was in the paper that residents couldn't hear them because it just wasn't the same.
Woke up to this siren sound this morning...very erie because i have not heard it in years and know these sirens dont exist anymore. Anyone els here it?
I was told by the EMA director of Dearborn that the all Whelens are decommissioned. He also told me that he has been getting complaint calls from Dearborn residents saying that the new 2001s are not loud enough. Are you able to hear 2001s from your house?
@88mroux Inkster should still have their 2800s but I haven't checked to see if West Shore Service ether replaced their controllers or didn't even touched their Whelens.
Siren1000T Inkster is the closest city to me since I live in garden city the last time I’ve ever heard their sirens go off was April 2016 from my house so maybe they don’t test anymore?
@88mroux Those were Whelens too but I think those were coming from Inkster cause they have 4 Whelen 2800 Series and its the closest city to this location that would have 2800 Series.
There's still a Whelen omni next to the Henry Ford Museum parking lot (As of two weeks ago, anyway). I neglected to pay attention to whether it was a 2700 or newer though.
The Whelen sirens were replaced becuase the technology was not in congruence with Homeland Securitys new regulations. HS can actually take modular control of all the FS 2001s if need be. Its a part of a nationwide warning system, tho I think Federal has a kickback im sure. Whelen got the raw deal on this one.
Sorry, it's been a LONG time since I heard the EOWS version, like a year or more. Someone finally posted it and I now see I was way off, lol: Pu7sWCXGlvg
I miss the "whoop" sound. Compared to the new whimpy siren, you could always here this in your house with the windows closed and the tv or radio turned on.
Tornado warning or severe thunderstorm warning (70 mph winds). They also did hi lo for winter storms to tell people to get thier cars off the streets to make way for the plows.
I'm confused. This is definitely the sound the Federal Signal Siratone 612 made in the infamous, long-lost "whoop" video; not the sound that a Whelen usually makes, especially in "whoop" mode - that can be heard in video # IkrcIlb0czs So... is this edited, or does this siren actually make the sound from another brand of siren? o_O
+derek wall aren't you just a cheerful little peach? I think as long as it gets everyone's attention, it doesn't matter who made it, or what the model number is, or how many rivets hold it together.. what a nerd lmao
+ImpyLane 😂😂😂 more like ImplyLane! You are right. and electromechanical sirens don't have sound blind spots. Only, the 2001 has pitch fluctuations on windy days.
2001s are better than whelens because FS made the thunderbolt and now they are making the 2001-130 so do not F*** the 2001-130. Thank you for reading this and do not cuss at me because I am only 10 years old and this is my dads account. -_-
Dearborn actually use to have Thunderbolts back then. They were actually 1000s until the Whelen 2700s came in in the late 1980s.
There is one whelen still in tact near Michigan avenue near Dearborn hills golf course
we have WHelens left in our countie and thunderbolts there all in good shape i dont want them to end up likethis one
I must admit 15 years ago in Michigan they would replace sirens to a 2001
They did
This scared the hell out of my when I first watched this
that one is still there but sounds alert
Nope. Never sounded alert. Lived right next to it.

To all of you still living in Dearborn, I pity you, and not just for the 2001's.
Why?...
that's what the fire alarm sounds like at my school.
VooDooAssassin2 same... only though the affected zone... aka fire zone would be having the wailing tone instead of the whoop tone.
@dearbornerik West Shore Services still has em there.
Wait, are they still there?
@parrthd1 Yes but the whelen got more signals than the 2001-103 and they need less maintenance because they got no rotator. but rotators are cool...

Sounds like a military base alarm.

When the siren shut off at 3:22, it sounded it like it was going into attack mode
I only like Whelens in Whoop or westminster chimes. I kind of miss Dearborn's whoop.
Tooele, UT tests their sirens in whoop
When I worked at Oakwood Common we were in the middle of several of them, staggered on top of each other sounded so amazing, like Star Trek. Whoopwhoopwhoopwhoop.... whoophwhoopwhoopwhoop....

It's just kind of loud if I have my volume on low
Ok....
@flaw885 ok what?
I am going to miss that good old siren too. I went there a couple days ago to take some pics of that.
Woke up to this siren sound this morning...very erie because i have not heard it in years and know these sirens dont exist anymore. Anyone els here it?
Well, it depends on what city and state you're in, and people may hear it
Well, it depends on what city and state you're in, and people may hear it
Sounds like the 3016's I grew up with
Wow that’s loud! The whelens in my town are so quiet that you would need a hearing aid in order to hear it lol
I was told by the EMA director of Dearborn that the all Whelens are decommissioned. He also told me that he has been getting complaint calls from Dearborn residents saying that the new 2001s are not loud enough. Are you able to hear 2001s from your house?

@F007Trace
Yeah.....definitely not deaf......
@djkid9 how do you request a tone
There's still a Whelen omni next to the Henry Ford Museum parking lot (As of two weeks ago, anyway). I neglected to pay attention to whether it was a 2700 or newer though.
2700. Almost all of Dearborns were 2700s. Except a couple of 28s or 29s.
most of the sirens around here are whelens... they work all the time...
that pretty much scarde me omg it came from no where
Me 2.
It sound's like some siren entheuest's sceraty alarm (LOL!!!)
thats to bad i really liked this
R.i.p headphones
I wish Waukesha had these in stead of shitty t-128s

What camera was this filmed on? This kinda also looks like there's just a filter applied to this video
It's fall man.
@F007Trace
Annoying how?
Ugh, 2001's are eating all of the cool sirens! D:
It's gonna affect Wichita Falls without a doubt
Unless they replace 2700 with 2900s
Damn, we have a whelen in gillette Wyoming with a whoop tone.
Sorry, it's been a LONG time since I heard the EOWS version, like a year or more. Someone finally posted it and I now see I was way off, lol: Pu7sWCXGlvg
Best whoop tone ever!!
Why get 2001s when you could have Mods that do the same signals?
DJ2226 Or have UV Controllers on the Whelens
I gave you 100 subscribers 😁
*composite artifact continues*
ooohhh, old controls.
I miss the "whoop" sound. Compared to the new whimpy siren, you could always here this in your house with the windows closed and the tv or radio turned on.
what is the purpose of the whoop (like the alert tone for a tornado, but a whoop for a what?)
Tornado warning or severe thunderstorm warning (70 mph winds). They also did hi lo for winter storms to tell people to get thier cars off the streets to make way for the plows.
INCOMING!!!!!
where can i get one ?
@Droideka133 camera movement?

cool marcie
Or am I wrong altogether and this is actually a normal Whelen sound? XD
I actually like some whelens bc of the design
Ohhh. Interesting! =3
@crabsnpubes i ment the new ones. thank god i moved
Was this the last test of this one and the other whelens?
I hate federal signal sirens, whelen all the way!! I love fin back whelen vortex r4's
dearborn is cool but their sirens are horrible
Funny. Everyone here knew exactly what they were hearing when they went off. You could hear them for miles. Not sure what you mean.
Fucking annoying! Sounds like an intruder alarm.
it doesnt sound healthy
Sounds just fine. It's always sounded like that. You may be hearing camera distortion
Annoying Siren but Nice Video
at least there better than Whelens
Bruh -_-
those fucking 2001s they suck and they're just electro mechanical they don't broadcast real warnings in voice like these do
+derek wall aren't you just a cheerful little peach? I think as long as it gets everyone's attention, it doesn't matter who made it, or what the model number is, or how many rivets hold it together.. what a nerd lmao
+ImpyLane 😂😂😂 more like ImplyLane! You are right. and electromechanical sirens don't have sound blind spots. Only, the 2001 has pitch fluctuations on windy days.
Mitchell Richardson yeah ya think garden city MI 2001-130s and DCs do same thing along with federal equinox sirens
Earrape
well at lest a 2001 siren replaced a siren that was worst than it
2001s are better than whelens because FS made the thunderbolt and now they are making the 2001-130 so do not F*** the 2001-130. Thank you for reading this and do not cuss at me because I am only 10 years old and this is my dads account. -_-
Well, the 2001-130's may be good, but its not that good sometimes...
and 2001-130's maybe better than whelens, but the most of the time its mostly whelens
