hey i just use a mix of pure gum turpentine and linseed oil, the initial coat i would recommend the mix being about 50/50,(this is so the mixture can soak into the wood more), then the additional coats decrease the amount of gum turpentine and increase the linseed oil. Try doing 3 coats and let each one dry before the next goes on, It's worth the wait. Due to the wood being quite resistant to water log a permanent seal isn't necessary.
it's a challenge, but still super fun. Slide outs and nose dives are a regular occurrence. haha. Makes it all the better when you get a good wave though.
It's a fair call, it sort of depends on your, weight, style and purpose for the board. Although the traditional Alaia boards would range from 4 feet to 16 feet so this one is definitely not the longest of Alaia boards.
paulownia is the most common and best wood to use for alaias but western red cedar is also good or even pine works fine. the reason paulownia is so great is because it naturally repels water and is light and strong.
the plank was 7ft long by 18inces wide and 3/4 of an inch thick. i bought mine from this site, (if your in Australia) if not there are tonnes of other sites. surfinggreen, com,au

looks excellent. love the bay bus too :)
@percy films did you just make concave on the tail? And what wood did you use
You know, this would be a good board for snowboarders who want to learn how to surf. No fins. :D Could get really interesting.
how long did this take? and what tipe of wood you needed?
its called paulownia wood, very water resistant and light for its strength.
hows it paddle? i made one a little while ago and it paddles terrible
did you every ride this board. I am thinking of making my own wooden board, but probably a new school mal shape, probably around 7 foot 5.
it's called paulownia wood, very water resistant this is why you only need to use a linseed oil coat.
Which mass you needed for the template? :-)
what were the dimensions of the original piece of wood?
and what did you use to keep it water tight
Great Vid!
What tool are you using at 1:50?
it's a spokeshave made by "faithful". really useful.
how'd it turn out in the water
yeah it's slow and tiring, but duck diving is a breeze.
the finished board was around 6'4" tall.
did it ride well
nah, i didn't end up glassing it. it doesn't really need it. the exra weight might be a problem.
whats the name of the tool you used to do the rails
A spokeshave
what did you paint on the wood at 4:00
What type of wood you needed? ;-)

is that linseed oil you put on at the end?
what type of woood is it?
what wood did u use?
what are the dimensions?
Have you glassed it?
and how tall was your board when it was finished?
well, it probably would if i put more time into getting use to riding it.
