@@bow-tiedengineer4453 Actually, I think this is an actual interrogation technique: put the subject in a room and let their imagination do all the "torture" for you. That way, you can have all the stress and mental anquish of torture while being able to truthfully claim you never tortured the prisoner. The captor isn't responsible for if the prisoner's imagination runs away with them after all.

      @The_Viscount ปีที่แล้ว +12

@MTF Tau-5 ("Samsara") the US also did that to POWs, and Japanese in particular. After what they knew of how they treated POW's, and how the propaganda portrayed Americans, the sheer disconnect between expectation and reality was often enough to deeply shake their conviction. A number of them chose to become US citizens rather than repatriate. If the US treated their prisoners as guests to this extent, how must they be in other aspects of life? I've seen accounts of some of these soldiers having a severe crisis of faith in their cause and even shame at how their own people conducted warfare.

Human torture isn't going to be particularly painful necessarily. It's going to be boring, hours, days and weeks of boredom. Wasting the only actual thing of value in your life, your time. On top of that the cabinets aren't full of things you don't want, but things you do. Cooperation means you eat, or drink, or finally get to cure the boredom. Otherwise, you can sit in a cell. Forever.

I can picture Denise Gough (Dedra Meero) as the Interrogator.
Interrogator, scrolling through a Physiology and Biology summary on her PAD: "Meh. I've done worse. I have no idea WHY; torture is extremely ineffective for most species. I prefer one of the colloquial 'truth serums'... 'Two brains'... 'With three sentient minds each that appear to combine as the unconscious to a primary sapience in the third brain.'.... '... extremely high pain tolerance...'... '... having a very active imagination and prone to...' blahblahblah 'and PARANOIA in the lower ranking Soldier class'. Interesting... Okay. I have an idea."
    Lab Assistant: "Sir?"
Interrogator: "Take this creature to one of the medical exam rooms. Make it a small one." Into intercom: "Ensign Porter? Lieutenant Harper to Ensign Porter, do you copy?"
    Porter: "Yes ma'am."
Interrogator: "Go to your quarters and get that nasty little vermin you call a 'pet' and bring him to..."
Lab Assistant, looking at their PAD: "Consultation Room seven, sir."
    Interrogator: "Sickbay Consulting Room seven."
Porter: "HIS NAME IS REMY! And yes Ma'am... May I ask why?"
Interrogator: "He's a RAT, and I need him for an interrogation."
Porter: "Whaaaat? Mom?? The hell are you planning to-"
    Interrogator: "THAT'S AN ORDER, ENSIGN."
Porter: "ugh. YES SIR!" Several staff chuckle as the Interrogator closes the intercom.
Interrogator, with a sardonic smirk: "And I thought she was bad BEFORE she got married."
Lab Assistant: "Whelp, she did marry Chad, after all. You going to pull a Pittman Gambit?"
Interrogator: "Yup. Get an intern or two and clear out those cabinets. We'll put the... We'll put Remy in one of the empty cabinets. Tell him to keep quiet, except to sparingly make some of those creepy scratching, rustling noises that his non uplifted kin tend to make. Honestly, I see more of me in her with that attitude of hers. I just hoe that's a good sign."
Lab Assistant: "Yes sir. Even they find it unsettling if they're not the ones making the noise... May I contribute? I think one of my bunkmates just got a new journal you can use. He won't be finished with the current one for a solid month, I think."
Interrogator: "Oooh. Good one; blank pages for a mindgame... Is that the bunkie that writes with the green ink?"
Lab Assistant: "Yes sir. And an old dip pen he got from his grandfather."
Interrogator: "If he has a spare bottle, we'll spill some of it from the cabinet. Goolfrandri blood is green. I'd use it to take notes on some other paper like I was studying a textbook instead of staring at the blank journal... A bit macabre for my taste; something my Professor would do... Leave the rations in the ration cabinet. I'll reward this creature for its cooperation."
Lab Assistant: "Brilliant, sir... Permission to speak freely?"
    Interrogator: "... Go ahead."
Lab Assistant: "Between you and Chief Engineer Chad, I think it's a VERY good sign. There's a reason Lieutenant Commander Jamar recommended Chad be promoted ahead of himself and I did the same for you, despite Chad being relatively new and you being almost half my age and experience... For The Empire."
Interrogator: "And for the Elected Emperor... Thank you. Dismissed."
