Building the Best Damn GMC Motorhome Ever E.13 - Power Steering and Legal Lighting

  • In an effort to make the motorhome look even more updated I'm changing the side marker lights. This means I need to go looking for the laws that govern lighting on automobiles. Also, I'm going to remove the power steering box so that I can get it to stop leaking.

      This video is doing poorly compared to the last. Those downvotes hurt. I probably should have kept my mouth shut. My last video had 100% upvotes this one is around 94%. I'll have to wait a few days until I can see the rest of the metrics, but it really does seem like there is a measurable decline of my success for speaking out. Snitches get stitches, whistle blowers go to prison... I'm seeing a trend here.

    Hi, being a long time GMC Motorhome owner (since 1988) one very important thing you should do ASAP is to get rid of the exhaust manifolds and replace them with headers! The stock manifolds get extremely HOT and could cause serious problems. The headers will cut your exhaust heat by 50% and cool the coach to a better interior temperature also adding the exterior hot air release fins above the front tires will help as well! Also the headers will get you better gas mileage..

    • @IndustriousPursuits
      @IndustriousPursuits  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      After considering your comment, it's likely that I will install headers at some point. Thank you for the input!

    Good ol conspicuity tape.
    (Cons pe que ity) White, Amber, Red. As you’ve found there’s no real regulations on size of lights just that they all are illuminated and correct color, however use good judgment on their size so they can be seen. Button lights, while bright, can be hidden by body contours. That’s why the regulations changed in the 70’s tail lights did nothing for visibility of a vehicles side. Hence reflectors, then they became illuminated and ugly, and finally further amending of the regs allow for blending of the tail lights to “wrap around” combining side and rear into one unit if a manufacture chooses - Thousand projects in One you have there. Keep at it.

    As far as the reflective tape is concerned you should seal the edges and keep precut replacements handy as (at least with older and probably less expensive stuff) it would harden and flake around the edges.

    If you left the castle nut on the tie rod end bolt and then hit it, it should have popped out of the socket, kinda making the tie rod tool redundant. Just FYI for future. :) Keep up the good work.

    • @ssteele1812
      @ssteele1812 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Having used that trick on several vehicles, I will say that it is not 100% successful. I have crushed castle nuts before and still needed the "pickle fork" to get the tapered bolt out of the arm.

    • @ssteele1812
      @ssteele1812 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've also used the trick of applying pressure between the parts and tapping the edge of the arm, where the tapered hole is, and had the stud come loose. Also not 100% effective in every case.

      use aluminum blind pop rivets with steel shanks. The blind rivets have an enclosed bottom. They are are a cup of sorts and therefore they can only possible leak on the outside, but with the steel shank they are seated so hard, you won't have to worry about it. Of course, I still use a little bit of roof sealant.

    There is a reason why all manufacturers use side marker lights. In Canada it has to ba a light, we have a lot of poor visibility weather here. Also you may run into an inspector or a cop that does not know this rule and you will be in court haggling over a reflector. Plus there is the issue that the motorhome was built that way and now it is 'altered'. It depnds on where you plan on going with it I suppose. Side marker lights are dirt cheap at the local automart. Lets suppose that you are making a turn on a foggy night and somebody runs into the side of you and there is an injury and that person is in court with a lawyer saying "I didnt see it"

      You need to do some research. Not to get into the Republican/Democrat paradigm argument (which is really the Republicrats) but the unions got fat and cocky, lead by equally corrupt "leaders" and politicians. They screwed the pooch while Axis Countries rebuilt under the Marshall Plan, thinking they weren't going to produce goods equal to what they made. History showed them, eh?
