I think that is the old version of the silent brass, with the newer one they reduced the back presasure and made the reverbs a lot more realistic. They also made it fit flush with the bell rather than protuding outwards, enabling you to put the trombone in it's case with the mute in which is rather useful for transportation.
Do you like the new version sound? I have the older trumpet one and found the sound really stuffy or unrealistic (like you were playing in the bottom of a well)
I am a trumpet/cornet player and recently bought a compact ProTec practice mute. It does produce quite a bit of back pressure which is unpleasant, but I discovered something about it that that resulted in me using it all the time when I practice now. I have found that it not only helps me improve the clarity of my intonation, but it also strengthens my lip and increases my durability because the back pressure exercises your lip more and therefore strengthens the lips. I especially find it useful for getting my lip back in shape in a short period of time after I get over a cold or something, and of course it’s awesome to be able to practice anytime anywhere.
The lowest harmonic on the trumpet/cornet silent brass mute is abominable. Almost a quarter tone sharp. I assume the trombone one might be less so considering the trombone itself is a little more secure in the lower register.
I have this system, the tuning will make you sharp slightly and in the range from low b flat to low f is extremely sharp. These mutes are best for high range work and mid range long tone work

I have the later model and it blows easily. It also has an option for an auxiliary, which I can hook to a recording and play along with (hearing it and the trombone through the headphones). Greatest thing since sliced bread.
While the reverb feature may be impractical for skills improvement, as you mentioned, I could see myself still using it a lot just for the cool factor, trying different songs, etc. IOW, a potentially dangerous thing to put in the hands of a procrastinator like me. : )
Trent, could that same mute be used in my straight belled baritone without getting lost down the bell? OR does YAMAHA make special "Silent Brass mutes for baritone and euphonium players' instruments alone I've had one for my trumpet for many years and I know that won't work in a baritone. I actually think the reverb effects are a great idea. When playing in an echoey auditorium, performance hall or otherwise it’s advisable to adjust your articulation/note length to account for the reverb, and using a reverb setting would allow you to actually hear what you’re doing on that front.
Thank you for the demonstration, Trent. I'm surprised that the trombone version of Silent Brass differs so vastly to the trumpet model, where there is very little noticeable back-pressure. I would say that the amount of back-pressure caused by the trumpet Silent Brass is comparable to the trumpet ssh mute. My unit, which is an older generation, does not contain the same ridiculous levels of reverb as the one you demonstrated. I too would find that level of effect to be useless. For a time I used my Silent Brass regularly, but less so these days when I'm less considerate of my family and neighbors.
I thought it would be cool to mix in some feeds from the AUX port and then LINE OUT to a speaker but the reverbs on the unit are terrible and you get an awful trumpet sound back from the mute. So, nix that idea. I also hated all the wires to and from the main unit. (This was a lot of years ago - they've made lots of improvement on wireless mics now)

I purchased the tuba version this year. I thoroughly enjoy it. My work schedule (if you can really call it that) often means the only time available to practice is late at night. I also like being able to connect my iPhone to the control box so I can play along with my favorite songs. The mute disassembles so it can be stored inside the instrument, inside its case. The only downsides to this mute so far are that it adds about ten pounds of weight to the instrument, and it’s a bit complicated to set up, as it comes with a strap to secure it to the bell. However, that extra weight is actually a benefit, as my tuba now feels significantly lighter when I don’t use it!
The system has improved tenfold since this version. Ironically, I got mine last week. I can say the sound quality is much clearer, the reverb makes sense. The pickup can actually fit in your pocket, and just overall it's much more efficient. I haven't taken it out of my bell yet. I'd return that and pay 165$ for the new version. 300$ is too much, especially for the older version
Do you know where I can get one of these? I do live in an apartment complex and there are heavy restrictions on loud noises. A system like this would be very beneficial to me
Okay so this is a question that might seem super stupid but cut me some slack I’m a trombonist that rarely touches a trumpet. But I understand the whole concept of trumpet fingerings and all that but why is it that when you play in 6th or 7th position you have to push the slide out manually? I mean like why isn’t the slide adjustable similar to a main tuning slide instead of having to move it out specifically for those notes
One thing you failed to discuss is the AUX IN port to allow you to port in a Music Minus One or some other source of play-along accompaniment. I found it pretty useful for practicing quietly without the need for an amplified accompaniment. I don't use it much, and have the older version like you've shown here. I'd be interested in the 'new' version if I could really justify more of a need for it.
Something interesting here is that the old mute fits your bass trombone: the newer units aren't listed as compatible with bass trombones, and mine doesn't work on my 9" bell bass. Something for folks to keep in mind, and a good reason, perhaps, for owning both models, or at least the mute portion of each.
There's a really prominent upper harmonic with each note played that sounds really odd like a weird aftertaste. Wonder whether that is connected to the back pressure thing. Or if it's just how the internal mic is mounted - perhaps picking up too much mechanical vibration from the bell instead of just the airborne sound from within.
4:29 I personally would use it to create songs with a trombone on a computer without having to worry about my neighbors being annoyed and in a real life example, i'd use it to familiarize myself in a performing location's reverb level. My marching band practiced with ear plugs in before finals because it would simulate how it sounds in a stadium while performing.

Want to add a practice mute for my tuba, however, and can't find anything in stock in the USA under $300. That being regular practice mutes as the tuba Silent Brass mute is $500-600, so something like a Denis Wick mute for $200 less makes more sense. Assuming I can ever track one down that doesn't jump a couple hundred dollars in price.
I use one of these with my cornet when I travel for work. It only has slight reverb and works pretty well, but lower notes are hard to keep in tune. Still, it's more fun than a Shh mute and hasn't disturbed anyone ... so far. Mine can also channel backing tracks or other accompaniment and blends in pretty well which is useful.

I still use it, and if you take in to account that this is a 24 year old electronic design, I think it is quite good. What would be interesting is if you could test the old vs the new design. I haven't tested the "new" (the second generation was launched in 2014), but it is said to have less back pressure, and I would guess that the electronics in the box has been upgraded quite a bit after 20 years.

Same features minus all the extraneous reverb settings. It has volume, reverb one (small room) reverb two (big room/concert hall). I have also used it with effect pedals and amps to get some very cool sounds and have more reverb options. Any pedal you have you can use with an small to big aux adapter. @Maniacal4 uses them in there cover of “Carry on my wayward son” if you want an example. Super helpful for late night and early morning practice sessions. It has a 3 connection ports. A “mute” in connecting the mute to the power/controls, an “aux”, and a “phones” for connecting to headphones or going the other direction and connecting to pedals and amps. The best part is it also fits perfectly into flugelhorn bells
I think the revered is for if your playing in stadium sort of envirments often, like in a high school marching band. But I don't see why it would go to far with the revered
Personally, I use my Trumpet Silent Brass for slightly different reasons. I use the 3.5mm headphone out jack as a DI to record directly into GarageBand. Also mine came with an adapter for a guitar amplifier, so I plug my mute into my Fender Acoustasonic with some cool effects pedals.
Great review as always, Trent. That looks like the old model, however. The new models (mine is the SBX-7) are much smaller - basically the same 'footprint' as my K&G trumpet stand. There's no 'overhang', so I can put the Strad in its case with the mute in the bell (I don't, but I could :-D). The new preamp has only one input and there are only two reverb settings. Some people hate the reverb, but I find the lowest setting is fine - just like rehearsing in a typical room rather than an acoustically treated studio. The high setting is great for hiding the odd articulation issue :) Both are a lot more realistic and less intrusive than that old model. It would have been great if Yamaha had given a way to turn reverb off altogether, though. As regards back pressure, I can't comment about the trombone version, but the updated trumpet version doesn't create much additional resistance - there's some, but not huge amounts, and certainly nowhere near what the old SilentBrass did. What it DOES do is create huge amounts of water - I end up clearing the spit valve every few minutes. So I'm banned from the living room even with the SilentBrass - my wife hates it when I dribble on the hardwood floor lol. The big gotcha is that it does affect pitch. Not so much on the Bb trumpet and cornet. But on the Eb soprano cornet, the bottom end goes horribly flat and the top goes ridiculously sharp (G above the stave is almost an Ab - I have to use 1+3 to play in tune). I suspect this is related to the backpressure, since that particular pattern of pitch hell is usually down to player airflow issues :-D That would also explain why it gets worse as the instrument gets smaller, and I assume on a horn, trombone, euph, etc. it wouldn't even be noticeable. A lot of people forget that the SIlentBrass is effectively a piezo pickup, much like you'd get in a guitar. That allows for some very creative uses: I picked up a guitar effects pedal on Ebay for $40 and feed the output of the SBX into it when I'm feeling adventurous :-) It does need some adapters (the SBX is stereo, and the pedals expect/require a mono signal) but they were only a couple of dollars on Amazon :-)
I have the Silent Brass Trumpet mute, and I can play while my wife sleeps in the next room with the door open, and she does not wake up!! I have tried many mutes over the years, and this is tho ONLY mute I can say this about! If you have to practice, and don't want to have to go outside and sit in your car to play, this is the mute to do it with!!
So if you were to plug in speakers instead of earphones, you've got an electric horn..! Or maybe you can plug the mute into a different mixer and get cool different sounds!
Honestly, I have a slightly older model for trumpet and it is shit. After 5 minutes of playing it just stops working. It barely amplifies the sound to begin with and aftrr some playing it doesn't amplify it at all. Basically all I would hear is the sound coming out of the actual thing and not the headphones. It is practical in other ways I must say. For example when you really feel like playing at 12 pm, you could play without bothering anyone. The resistance is a real bugger for keeping notes from getting false and it takes a lot of breath too.

Lets say I play tune Summertime, I a recording with Silent Brass and a CD recording, or I take the tune from You Tube and play together! At the same time no one get disturb in my house, great! I have the trumpet version. I don't like it. I used it for about a week, then put it away. First annoyance: trailing wires that get tangled - have they not heard of Bluetooth? Second: why do I have to buy batteries and put them in? My phone and just about every other equipment I use has built- in rechargeable batteries. Finally, I hate the sound I'm listening to through headphones - so artificial, and unlike the natural acoustic sound. Yamaha ought to know better! They're a high-tech company after all. I don't think this kit is fit for purpose. It's cumbersome and demoralising to use.

another use of it is to plug-in an audio source with a backing track and practice with it. Useful for practicing improvisation.
The high levels of reverb are for practicing for a performance in a large concert hall or something else that requires you to articulate very cleanly.

7B. They’re beautiful instruments. I personally prefer the 7 over the 8, but I’ve only spent a little bit of time playing an 8

The mute really messes up your tone and the reverb levels are pretty bad. There are much better ways to record than with this set-up.

That looks like the old model, however. The new models (mine is the SBX-7) are much smaller - basically the same 'footprint' as my K&G trumpet stand. There's no 'overhang', so I can put the Strad in its case with the mute in the bell (I don't, but I could :-D).
The new preamp has only one input and there are only two reverb settings. Some people hate the reverb, but I find the lowest setting is fine - just like rehearsing in a typical room rather than an acoustically treated studio. The high setting is great for hiding the odd articulation issue :) Both are a lot more realistic and less intrusive than that old model. It would have been great if Yamaha had given a way to turn reverb off altogether, though.
As regards back pressure, I can't comment about the trombone version, but the updated trumpet version doesn't create much additional resistance - there's some, but not huge amounts, and certainly nowhere near what the old SilentBrass did. What it DOES do is create huge amounts of water - I end up clearing the spit valve every few minutes. So I'm banned from the living room even with the SilentBrass - my wife hates it when I dribble on the hardwood floor lol.
The big gotcha is that it does affect pitch. Not so much on the Bb trumpet and cornet. But on the Eb soprano cornet, the bottom end goes horribly flat and the top goes ridiculously sharp (G above the stave is almost an Ab - I have to use 1+3 to play in tune). I suspect this is related to the backpressure, since that particular pattern of pitch hell is usually down to player airflow issues :-D That would also explain why it gets worse as the instrument gets smaller, and I assume on a horn, trombone, euph, etc. it wouldn't even be noticeable.
A lot of people forget that the SIlentBrass is effectively a piezo pickup, much like you'd get in a guitar. That allows for some very creative uses: I picked up a guitar effects pedal on Ebay for $40 and feed the output of the SBX into it when I'm feeling adventurous :-) It does need some adapters (the SBX is stereo, and the pedals expect/require a mono signal) but they were only a couple of dollars on Amazon :-)

Yes. On this model you can connect two different compatible practice mutes, and this adjusts the volume of each of the inputs.

I have tried many mutes over the years, and this is tho ONLY mute I can say this about!
If you have to practice, and don't want to have to go outside and sit in your car to play, this is the mute to do it with!!
I have the Yamaha Silent Brass for trumpet. It's the best mute by far, in my opinion.

The advantage of brass, easy to mute. Not so with woodwind! To be able to mute my clarinet like this would be great because no bugger wants to hear it
Honestly, I have a slightly older model for trumpet and it is shit. After 5 minutes of playing it just stops working. It barely amplifies the sound to begin with and aftrr some playing it doesn't amplify it at all. Basically all I would hear is the sound coming out of the actual thing and not the headphones. It is practical in other ways I must say. For example when you really feel like playing at 12 pm, you could play without bothering anyone. The resistance is a real bugger for keeping notes from getting false and it takes a lot of breath too.
You can also play at midnight with it

I have the trumpet version. I don't like it. I used it for about a week, then put it away. First annoyance: trailing wires that get tangled - have they not heard of Bluetooth? Second: why do I have to buy batteries and put them in? My phone and just about every other equipment I use has built- in rechargeable batteries. Finally, I hate the sound I'm listening to through headphones - so artificial, and unlike the natural acoustic sound. Yamaha ought to know better! They're a high-tech company after all. I don't think this kit is fit for purpose. It's cumbersome and demoralising to use.
