Suits are older than the 50s, incidentally. We might be stuck in the 20s by that standard. This style of theirs is designed to be comfortable yet formal, a very strange way to be "superior" to the common man while appearing "approachable". Ironically since all people of authority dress this way, everyone else imitate them, thus it became a "default look" rather than a prestigious one. It must be said as well, that this style of fashion might not have originated from China mainland, as I have seen them all over from Hong Kong to Taiwan, but most commonly in Nanyang - Singapore Malaysia and Indonesia, among the Chinese diaspora.

    • @FreddieHg37
      @FreddieHg37 ปีที่แล้ว +6

@@lc9245 Well, yeah, I didn't say suits or this type of clothing or style originated in the 50s, if that's what you meant, but that their style, aesthetics and mentality got stuck in that era.
It does reminisce of the style a casual blue collar worker would use in a cookout on a weekend or in their Sunday stroll up to the 1950s, that's all I'm trying to say.

If you guys visit Vietnam, especially in the North. You can see the similar in fashion style. Because we hot, so polo or T-shirt- mostly short sleeves- is the "go for" for like everyone. We don't want to be so casual so you got the pants (they make from a material carvans alike or streching materials, khaki and black or dark colors for serious or formal element.) We tucked in because it make us look more formal. Shoes need to be formal (dressing shoes a like) but comfortable (the grind and sporty sole). Sometimes if we just want to walk around and go to public places but it to sweaty for the shoes, we take sandals- leather ones and it make with leather (the dress- sandals). Combine all of them, you get the Lao Ban look.

This particular Lao Ban look combined with the arrogant swagger always puzzled me, as I wondered where it came from and exactly what these puffed-up little idiots were trying to project; well now I know thanks to you guys!

I remember one particularly skinny little character used to shove padding of some sort (rubberised foam, pillows, rolled-up towels, who knows?) under his tucked-in pastel green or pink polo shirt in order to fabricate the belly that he did not naturally possess, and had the very same carefully-manicured Mao hairstyle too; he used to strut around with one arm bent behind his back and his receding jaw jutting out defiantly as if he was the Dear Leader himself (in reality he drove the delivery truck for the local Asian vegetable market).

And for shoes...China does this well: an original Abibas sneaker is considered to be so hip in most Slavic countries, that it's often more expensive than Holy Adidas itself. For whatever it's worth, laoban in my area of China were really big on the striped over-sized polo shirts. they did maintain the sort of dullish sunbleached part of it but they liked some sort of lateral stripes. everything else with it, the sneakerdress shoes, the keys and of course the too long grey dress pants.

Hahah, thanks for covering this. I'm pretty confident this video is very tongue in cheek. I just wanted to express my distaste for this fashion, notwithstanding: 1) I'm not a fashion expert, 2) I realize tastes differ and are subjective, 3) I don't think that anyone should be looked down on based on their appearance, 4) I think a lot of the lao ban look stems from function over aesthetic and 5) Many of the general populace either don't care that much about or lack much fashion sense. However, I see many mainlander Chinese and Hong Kong people with this style and I just think it looks extremely unappealing and tacky. Maybe there is a wardrobe that goes better with the general male Chinese complexion and hair color, etc.

Lao Ban fashion is also similar to Gastarbeiter look in the Balkans. Worn by slightly older people who worked in Central Europe (Germany, Switzerland, Austria) that came back home and want to show they are money. They wear muted polo shirts, cheap suit pants and cheap leather shoes or sandals with socks not to mention a watch that costs 300€ or a fake Rolex. They invariably drive German cars but only the luxury ones like BMW, Audi, Mercedes that they either spent all their money on (is still 2 years old) or is 15 years old.
Similar fashion trends across the world.

My dad is Australian, no Chinese in our family at all, and he has been rocking the Lao ban look for decades..
With the half way between corduroy and jeans style black pants..
Polo shirt with two or three buttons at top (but he leaves one or two undone).
Tucked in with black belt but he has pretty old style simple buckle.
Shoes: semi sneaker semi dress shoes that are black but comfortable. lol
I’ll have to explain the Lao ban look to him hehe.
Very close to the dancing guy near the end, but black pants, and black shoes.
Also in Australia there are lots of older Chinese that go to night time dancing clubs, but not in parks, almost always in a public hall / community hall, and is usually organised through local government so it is free or very cheap. But only really older people.

I know quite a few bosses in China that definitely do not dress like this. There are many more that do, but quite a few old-school bosses are button-down shirt, casual/dress pants and sneakers.
Of course you can get some pretty nice custom hand-made dress shoes for just a few hundred dollars. I have several pairs all made by a guy who started his own shop after leaving a major manufacturer.
If you want the ultimate walking shoe for just about anywhere....Ecco, hands down. Super comfy. I averaged 16-20k steps/day in China for about 2 years per pair of Ecco slip-ons. The soles wore extremely slowly. In fact, I only got rid of each pair when the seam where the sole attaches began to separate. I have a stack of 6 more pairs of the exact style sitting in my closet that should last me well over a decade.

It was all funny until I realized most of the computer programmers at the company I work for here in the US wear the same thing. In fact I was joking around with my girlfriend just this morning that she should shoot me if I dress like the computer programmers I work with. The “uniform” here is usually a slightly loose medium blue polo shirt, kaki chinos, brown belt and brown loafers 👞 . Keep in mind we don’t have a dress code at our company, this is what these people choose to wear! I’ve been amazed at times when I surveyed the people at a meeting and at least 50 percent of the men were dressed like this. I have since moved to another division in the company and nobody dresses like this there, so it makes me think it has to do with a type of peer pressure, even an unconscious one, that is occurring among the IT department.
