    The J-20 "Mighty Dragon" was originally produced as a single-seat fighter, but China has recently started producing two-seat versions, allowing a Weapons Systems Officer (WSO) to reduce the pilot's workload. This indicates that China's avionics, weapons systems and munitions may not be nearly as capable as America's 5th Gen fighters.

      A WSO is pretty useful for massed air-to-air fights. The biggest use though, is in the Air-to-Ground role, for lasing targets or spying other stuff to shoot with the sensor ball, leaving the pilot to worry about flying the plane and defensive maneuvering. I'll guess the 2-seat will be strike versions, just like how the Su-27 developed into the Su-34 Strike craft, and the Su-35.

    • @voidtempering8700
      @voidtempering8700 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      That is not the main reason. The second pilot is also supposed to be used with drones. Also, avionics is not an issue, their is a reason 6th gen aircraft are going to be two seaters, one pilot, especially with drones operations, is not enough.
      The J-20a and J-20b are designed for a different purpose than the J-20s two seater.

    • @PlugInRides
      @PlugInRides ปีที่แล้ว +47

      @@voidtempering8700 I guess that's why all the drawings for Tempest, NGAD, FA-XX and FCAS depict single-seat, 6th Gen fighters? The whole point of "Loyal Wingman", is that the UCAVs will have so much AI, they will act semi-independently, with minimal human direction. Every mention of Loyal Wingman is also accompanied by "AI" and "autonomous".

NONE of these are meant for Carrier Ops, which is a byproduct of the competition with Top Gun. Top Gun is specifically a US Navy program. The RC-135 Rivet Joint, is a Signal Intelligence (SIGINT) reconnaissance aircraft, that basically can detect and locate any electro magnetic (EM) emissions (radio, radar, microwave, etc.) within its path. During my 19 years in China, I was an extra in Chinese TV and film many times (just for fun). And the Chinese film people struck me as shockingly ignorant of a lot of things and always tended to resort to outdated stereotypes of the uninformed. So it's very likely they simply didn't know that you don't bake a fighter jet with a person inside it! On the other hand, China (of all countries) may indeed do something that, considering their abysmal human rights record. The Great Helmsman even managed to shock Stalin and the Soviets with his reckless boasting, "Go ahead, drop an atom bomb on China! We have lots of people to spare!" (This was per Mao's personal doctor who witnessed the exchange.)

    From what I've seen in the trailer footage, the CGI wasn't as terrible as pretty much everything else, and at face value, I could have seen this movie doing pretty well over there even if it still had some easily-noticeable crap.
    What blows my mind is that they threw the project out because it wasn't good enough, as if the rest of their stuff is any better. Maverick is probably my favorite movie of all time now, and this has nothing on it, but this was ONE TIME where I can say they put in effort, and yet they threw it all away. Also in the clips shown, did they really portray a Chinese fighter taking out an F-35? The level of integrated systems and tech in the F-35 let alone the years of study and practice and wars fought with an Air Force make the chances of some rudimentary Chinese domestic product taking one out as near fantasy.

    Top Gun: Maverick would NEVER get made in China, because its main premise is that the US Navy's most advanced fighter, the Lockheed F-35C, doesn't work if GPS signals are being jammed. GPS is nice to have, but all modern combat jets are designed to work in electronic warfare environments.
    Leaving aside the fact that Maverick's strike mission would have probably been better handled by cruise missiles, the movie comes up with a BS reason to use Super Hornets, instead of "Fat Amy" (F-35). The real reason the movie uses Super Hornets, is that the F-35 doesn't have a two-seat version, that Tom Cruise could pretend to be flying on film, while actually sitting in the back seat. None of the cast could have been filmed in flying F-35s IRL, so instead we got F/A-18E/F Super Hornets.
    The needs of the movie, meant that people were given the wrong impression that the 5th Gen F-35C, was somehow less capable for a strike mission, in contested airspace, than 4.5 Gen Super Hornets. I doubt China would ever allow a film to claim the J-10 or J-16, was better than the J-20.

    • @voidtempering8700
      @voidtempering8700 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @KSmithwick1989 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      What was even more puzzling was the random use of single seat F/A-18s. Even though twin-seat models were also used in the film. That basically existed for plot purposes, so Tom Cuise could also lase his own targets. Even though using a WSO would have clearly made more sense.
      Also it convientely allowed him and Goose's son, to pair up in the old F-14. After they both got shot down, in their random single seat F-18s.

    China’s J-11 looks like an exact copy of Russia’s Su-27. And it almost is-but it’s nowhere near as reliable or capable. Beijing received seventy-six Su-27 fighters from Moscow in 1992 to replace their aging Soviet-supplied fighters. They were liked so much that China negotiated a deal with Russia which meant up to two-hundred licensed copies of the Su-27 could be manufactured in China using Russian-supplied kits.
    Fast forward to 2003, and Chinese copies of the Su-27-the Shenyang J-11-were being built, possibly without Russian consent. It is possible that these airframes were reverse-engineered copies not covered by the earlier licensing agreement.
    The Shenyang J-15 is an unlicensed copy of an Su-33 prototype, sold to China by Ukraine along with a derelict aircraft carrier, which became the Liaoning. Since this was not the fully developed Su-33, China's J-15 has had many problems. Chinese netizens started calling the J-15 the "Flopping Fish", due to it high accident rate.
    The Shenyang J-16 is a copy of the Sukhoi Su-30. It's unknown whether China acquired the rights to build this clone.
    China bought 24 Sukhoi Su-35 fighter jets from Russia worth $2.5 billion, but problems were found in 15 planes of the planes delivered, leaving only 9 operational jets. Russia had resisted selling China the Su-35, fearing the PLAAF would just clone more illegal copies, but Russia's need for cash became too great. Judging by the quality of the aircraft shipped, China may not want to copy these.
    The problem with today's Russian fighters is corruption. Every defense contractor and Russian Air Force General is trying to skim a bit of the budgets for these programs. Too many corners get cut, and everything is made on the cheap. The Soviet Union had stricter controls for its weapons manufacturing, but today's Russia is a full kleptocracy, where everyone is trying to enrich themselves. This can be seen in Ukraine, where Russia's once mighty army is unable to field enough tanks, or access spare parts. Many tanks, munitions and spares that should have been in Russia's inventory, were sold off by officers and ministers.

    If I remember correctly there are actually some cold/heat tests that require the pilot to be inside the aircraft during the test. However their safety is obviously priority, they would not be covered in icicles XD. Billie Flynn (RCAF retired) was a test pilot for F-35 and actually has a story where his canopy was temporarily frozen shut because they were testing the aircraft in -40 celsius to make sure all the electronics and engines functioned properly (source: Fighter Pilot Podcast, Episode 121, "Whats Up With The F-35?")

      Option B: The cold/heat tests happen as part of a disciplinary/punitive measure against the test pilots (also dangerously stupid).
      Option C: The cold/heat tests do not occur within the actual plot of Born to Fly but are a dream sequence experienced by the main character designed to illustrate the mental stress of his job through metaphor.
      Option C might actually be an interesting creative choice, so it is, sadly, the unlikeliest to be the case.
