      ok, but one thing that needs to be said: the story of Planescape Torment is already finished, it wasn't written to have a sequel but to be a standalone story. I've talked to other Torment fans and they all agree that attempting to continue the story of The Nameless One and his companions would never work and is a horrible idea that even a great studio would not likely be able to salvage.
      What could instead be done, however, is an anthology kinda thing. A different story revolving around different characters that is also set in the same setting and that recaptures the spirit of Planescape Torment, with the focus on story, the complex but engaging philosophical questions, and just the overall unique feeling the original had. We all know how much it often sucks when companies try to force sequels on stories that didn't need them, but with a different story and cast, I think something truly great could be crafted.
      But also, tbh, I don't know if Larian are the right people for this one. BG3 and DOS2 are fantastic games, but they're very different from PS:T. Larian doesn't really have much experience with designing a game just like Torment. The only people I think I could truly trust with this task are the guys who made Disco Elysium, that's a very similar game that managed to recapture many of the things that made Torment great and was just as successful.

      @ronben-ezer8373 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      another thing i'd absolutely love to see is a remake of the original game, with modern graphics, full voice acting, and use of the BG3 engine to solve many of Torment's original problems (which mostly stem from gameplay/age/combat). I don't want the dialogue to be changed in any significant way, a masterpiece shouldn't be messed with, but all the stuff outside the dialogue and story could be improved to create a true masterpiece of a video game

    I wish they were releasing a proper Manual of the Planes as part of this, with details and fleshed-out 5e rules for all of the Outer Planes. I'm sure the Gate Towns will be useful microcosmic starting points, but still.

      Unfortunately, WotC is not doing that. However, Planescape will be opened up on DMs Guild when this set is released, and there just might be something exactly like that covering a lot of this released then. ;) It's not an official WotC hardcover, but checking the latest draft from the team I'm working with, it's looking really cool and will hopefully fill this gap for a lot of people.
      And if not, I'm sure there will be other writers and other teams writing similar products for the planes, so hopefully there will be something out there eventually to meet everyone's tastes.

    • @ether4211
      @ether4211 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The 3.5 edition DMG had a chapter on the Planes that included example locations and rules for extra planner adventures that are easily translated to 5e. Most of the 3.5 and even a lot of 2nd edition lore and rules require only minor tweaks so it's probably a good thing that they're focusing on new lore/content over reprinting what already exists.

    • @flameknightdragon

      issue is you should not need to buy older editions to get this info

    • @ether4211
      @ether4211 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@flameknightdragon at least it's better then forcing people to rebuy the same books in multiple editions because WOTC totally rewrite the rules/history every few years (ala Magic the Gathering and 4th edition). Because there are a ton of books on Planescape already it makes sense to focus mode on updating statblocks so that you can grab any old adventure or sourcebook and run it under 5e - or just fill in the blanks using the free lore on the internet with whatever rules work for your campaign. This is what our DM did for Planescape/Dark Sun/Spelljammer and the old rules are pretty straightforward - healing is stronger in Positive Planes, elemental spells are more powerful in the associated inner planes and abilities like Divine Intervention won't work in Sigil. It's a 'perk' that DND has over Pathfinder that there is 'no wrong way to rule on how the outer planes work in your game so you can make them as complex or simple as you like. Eg I ran Ravenloft with just a PDF of the 2nd edition Domains of Dread book and google and swapped out the old stats for whatever 5e ones worked at the time.

    Honestly the thing that made Sigil unique in 2e was the kriegstanz, the philosophical cold war between the Factions for control of the city. Sure the Lady of Pain ruled but belief was power and if you could tip the scales anything was possible (shout out to Duke Rowan Darkwood). Will be very interested to see what they do with the factions beyond the planar philosopher background.

    After butchering Spelljammer I hope you guys have learned a lesson in properly caring for us the consumers instead of making a quick buck out of nostalgia. This one is specially important to me as a Planescape campaign was my introduction to DnD back in 3.5. The art looks promising at least.

      The problem for Spelljammer was too much was left on the cutting room floor, as evidenced by miniatures for a character not in the adventure (Prince Xavra in the Temple of Light box). This set has more pages but still far less than the 2e original box let alone it’s many expansions, hopefully they did a better job at getting the most important parts kept in, but it will still be too short.
      What Spelljammer needs is a supplement like Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenloft with more character options (Dohwar PCs for example), items, additional ship optional rules and lots more lore (Realmspace system details for example, major factions for another).
      However good this will be it’ll still be just the bare bones of the setting, but hopefully they can be convinced to do a sizeable supplement afterwards to get more meat onto those bones.

      @@marimbaguy715 I still don't understand the boxset format. Erberron had over 300 pages and it was one book all about the world and how to create an interesting game in that world. 96 pages of this is dedicated to an adventure that should have its own separate release and use those pages for more player options and world building. It just seems like a way to trick people into thinking they are getting more than what they realize. Idk, I guess Im just jaded after the Spelljammer release which was a giant nothing sandwich lol.

      So a key part of the lore is that Sigil is the center of the entire dnd multiverse and is a place where gods are locked out but the portals open up everywhere! This is why another nickname for Sigil is "The Cage" because once you are in Sigil it's often much harder to find your way back. This is why you get Angels/Devil's hanging out because their gods can't interfere, and it's a city built on refugees/outcasts/rebels and extra planner adventurers as 'all doors eventually lead to Sigil'. It's basically fantasy New York where every creature across the multiverse is either visiting, trying to escape or just make a living. So a Mindflayer bakery makes a lot more sense when you remember that there are a lot of zombies, undeads and monsters who want to be fed...and thus a market to sell your brain pies.

    To those who are unhappy there is no races or new subclasses, all i can say is this, dont worry. Planescape's strength was the weird possibilities found in the city. You will have a good time here (mostly, just dont walk up and ask the Lady of Pain on a date) and besides, have we already exhausted all the player options already? There is 50+ subclasses now or so, go try those out first.

    I get the reasoning, but it is WEIRD.
    You have all of an infinite multiverse, every reality, every possibility... and every single tine they use the same example of an angel meeting a devil at a bar. An idea that is decades old, and that they refernced at least three times.
    Infinite.
    Possibility.
