- Tenzing Dhamdul's family fled the Chinese invasion of Tibet. Now a research scholar of Tibet based in India, Dhamdul's work is at the same time deeply academic but also personal. He talks to Hindol Sengupta about the Tibet Bill in the US which is awaiting presidential signature and seeks to transform the contours of engagement between the US and China on Tibet. Dhamdul talks about,
- why China is waiting for a time after the current Dalai Lama and why the Tibet Bill insists that only the incumbent Dalai Lama will select his successor,

Some years before the HH Dalai Lama himself made it clear that reincarnation is only his business. Rightly so. The body and soul belong to him and only to him. It was also announced His own monastery - the Ghaden Phodang - could assist His reincarnation matter, if needed. Now what happened to that announcement?
As a modest demage control, all sane and sensible Tibetans should refrain from making useless comments on this matter.

Bruh...you are an ethnic Tibetan..not a Tibetan per se. You are an Indian National. You should know that you will NEVER be able to set foot in Tibet (which you have never anyway)
If you think we are Indian national ask the govt of India to give us the same right as every individual as of Indian nationality and do add our history in academic textbooks so every child in India understands and learns about Tibets history and make us feel included without the people of India not knowing where Tibet actually is In the MAP of this world !!!! Everybody is trying to talk about reincarnation of the present 14th. Dalai Lama. Yet nobody is neither qualified nor have the right to poke their noses in this matter.
It's partly the fault of Tibetan exile authorities to allow many who have nothing to do with this matter to poke their noses.
Now the cat is out of the bag. In the end "all free to poke their noses theme only helps Chinese claim"
The reincarnation is a peculiar Tibetan spiritual business.But it has become everybody's mandun business.
Although with good intention it is a wrong judgement on part of America to talk about the reincarnation of the 14th. Dalai Lama, to counter China. (I don't know whether it was on the request or on American own initiative )
If America is qualified to talk about this matter then why not China, China would retort. China would argue with logic that if America is spiritually qualified, why not China.
Now unfortunately reincarnation is turned into political business and everybody thinks they are qualified to poke their long noses.
It is Godless communist China who politicised the reincarnation issue. If communist China did not politicise the reincarnation issue, it would not have been an issue at all. It is evil communist China which tried to interfere in the reincarnation issue WHICH COMPELLED THE US TO TAKE A STAND ON BEHALF OF THE TIBETAN PEOPLE. The issue of reincarnation is entirely the prerogative of the Dalai Lama himself and nobody else but communist China started to make baseless claims without any basis and that caused the present politicisation of the reincarnation!!! It was a good discussion and Tenzin is knowledgable and expressed his ideas clearly.

No worries ... Tibetans are protected by Law as per Chinese-minority groups of 56-ethnicities. Tibetans are enjoying more personal liberty, religious freedom, and financial prosperity living as respected Chinese Citizens in Tibet-China, than any exiled Separatists living in India or in the U.S., who are facing discrimination, prejudices, no true human rights, and any better job employment & opportunity.
The province of Tibet-China's GDP-per-capita is much higher than any Indian State of similar land mass and population density. The Tibetans living in China are well off living longer and richer than any average Indian today, why would any smarter Tibetan-Chinese want to give up their good life, and join the poorer Indians & Tibetan separatists to suffer in India? ... Is this freedom or slavery in poor and under-developed India?

All along the US efforts is to promote dialogue between the People’s Republic of China and the Dalai Lama or his representatives; so as *to protect the unique religious, cultural, and linguistic identity of Tibetans and their human rights are respected.*
Also, US administrations have sought to press China to ease restrictions on foreigners’ travel to Tibet, where human rights activists say Beijing has engaged in a decades-long campaign to suppress local culture, the Buddhist religion and minorities.
