I think the reason why the shark didn't engage the people at the beach was because of how calm they were so the shark didn't take a chance, because when predators see prey, they swim or run away but when they don't, there's something wrong, of course this doesn't happen all the time, and that doesn't mean you can now walk camly passed a lion and it won't attack you

The reason the aquariums put stingrays, fish, and other creatures in the same tanks as some of their sharks is typically because they feed the sharks enough to where they feel that the sharks don’t have to consider the other prey items in the tank as “food,” and won’t eat the other animals. That’s what I hear, at least. Still seems like a pretty dumb idea.

Wow the swimmers never even saw the HH. I saw a 6 foot bull shark in crystal clear water in south Alabama. It was sneaking up behind me. I was alone on the beach and waded in to get wet. Something, I believe God, told me to turn left. I’d been facing out to sea. Waist deep water. It was between me and the shore. The minute it saw I saw it, it veered out to deeper water and I went to the beach. It’s was not a good thing. I was being hunted. That is not a good feeling. I broke the cardinal rule. Never get in the water alone. No one was on the beach. My sister and boyfriend had gone for a walk. July 1992.

Large aquariums put together a realistic ocean environment. However, they also generall hand feed all of the sharks in order to reduce the chances of sharks feeding on the others. Disney 's Aquarium does this. Which is why you can scuba dive with their sharks and be relatively safe. Of course as in this situation with the hammerhead shark... the unexpected happens.

I went with my best friend and her family on a beach trip when we were 12. We were in the ocean far enough out that we were in the water up to our shoulders. Two guys came up to us a little and told us to not freak out and don't move. We were surrounded by a group of jellyfish! We had no clue. They were the small ones that you can pick up by their tops and toss them away from you. The boys got enough of them away from us that we had a path we could escape from. Hammerheads aren't much of a danger to humans. The water was clear and it could see they weren't his prey, that's why you saw it turn away. Hammerheads often hunt in shallower waters because they love sting rays, who also often hang out in shallow water. Especially around where I live. We've had a good number of hammerheads coming almost right up on the beach and if you walk the beaches here in the late afternoon and it's really clear, you almost always see sting rays (or step on them, as I have several times. Sometimes they bury themselves in the sand and you don't know they're there til you feel it squirming out from under your foot). However we've never had even an accidental bite by a hammerhead. They can move quick in their zig zag pattern in short Burts before having to rest before trying again- they're not going to waste their short energy burst on you.
