I saw this movie in IMAX, and it was awesome. What it lacks in deep story and character arcs, it makes up for with awesome references, colorful action and great, non cringy humor. It's definitely the best movie Illumination has put out yet.

@Cosmic.Tropics that's a problem I feel with most movies. They might have an interesting premise or world but won't show much of that world, i.e. keeping the main story within a city or two instead of showing beyond the city.

I thought the movie was a solid 7.5/10. I have a lot of problems with it, but also a lot of good things to say too.
    Pros:
    - Feels like it was made by fans for fans
    - Visuals are absolutely stunning
    - Voice acting was surprisingly decent, even Pratt and Rogen I found to be pretty okay
    - A majority of the jokes I found funny, nothing that I actively groaned at
    - The finale was downright epic, and I will die on that hill
    Cons:
    - Pacing issues, movie felt like it was going too fast
    - Felt like it was too short, which in my opinion it was
    - Definitely needed more of characters interacting with each other
    - There was a lot of original music which was cut for random 80s songs, which sucks
    - Apparently they didn't credit a lot of the people who helped make the music, including Grant Kirkhope who made THE DK Rap, which is scummy in my eyes

Tbh it was kind of jarring how fast the pacing was at first watching the Mario Movie. Like by the time Mario and Toad met were already meeting Peach with the training course scene. Still I had a lot of fun with this movie and ended having a huge smile on my face leaving the theater.

I loved it, was happy for the whole thing. it did feel like maybe they had a sequel planned from the beginning and left some stuff out on purpose. Get the characters to a certain place to really tell a story (and give them more depth) in the next movie. Maybe even just giving us a basic introduction to this new cinematic universe, it seems like it has alot of possibilities. I would like to see Luigis mansion as a movie...I think it could be a great story.

I do not have much of a stake in this movie - but I have however, been an avid Zelda fan since childhood. I hear rumor that a Zelda movie is on the horizon, and being made again, by illumination.
This really concerns me, as I feel like Zelda, while not some sort of grimdark, does carry more seriousness to it than Mario.
I'm happy that many Mario fans got a movie they felt resonated with their love of the series. For us who are Zelda fans though, I know we want more story, more drama than there was in this film.
Again, don't go overboard with it, but a film set in the world of Hyrule calls for a heroic adventure, not a comedy with humor that undercuts every serious moment.
I will hold a spark of hope. Perhaps this movie will come. Someday.

    • @seanmyster6
      @seanmyster6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

I feel like Dreamworks (also owned by Universal now) would be the better choice for making a Zelda movie, since they've already shown that they're capable of making more serious heroic fantasy stories, such as Kung Fu Panda and How To Train Your Dragon.
But, if Illumination can prove themselves worthy in that department as well, then more power to them.

  • @MungkaeX
    @MungkaeX ปีที่แล้ว +5

Fair review. I would argue that part of the appeal Mario has beyond a simple Everyman is the typical Blank Slate character archetype so prevalent in games intentionally so the player can imprint on the character no longer seeing the character on screen they are playing as much as their own avatar. Clearly that is a detriment in a more narrative focused medium like film compared to the games, but that does partially explain why they may have been reluctant to develop his character too much as to break that connection between what “I” as the “player” projected onto the character.
Another interesting aspect of this characterization is Mario’s tenacity to pick himself up and try again and again and again. I think it was the Completionist in his review who brought this up in relation to how we as “gamers” try again and again and again in the games till we are successful.
Finally as a parent I can’t recommend this film enough. My 7 year old loved it, and I never once audibly nor visibly cringed at any point in the film. That is an exceptionally high bar for modern kids films, and I appreciated it. The fact my son wants to see it again shouldn’t surprise anyone; but I genuinely would like to see it again at least twice more (once going frame by frame picking the screen apart for each and every Easter Egg and a second time just to enjoy the ride again).

@@Scarabola Kamek in general was underused with how they even bothered to include him at all, the shot at the beginning where he's gleefully looking over Bowser's destruction had me (sadly) hopeful we were gonna explore a side of Kamek and Bowser's relationship we don't usually get, which is that of a mentor and/or surrogate father (which could then be used as a parallel to how the Mushroom Kingdom sees Peach, and she was taken care of by Toadsworth, who was sadly a cut character). Or the alternative, which is that Kamek was just controlling Bowser to expand on the Koopa Troop's domain for his own self gain. Clearly, i probably thought of the Yoshi Island implications more than the writers.

I saw this with my five-year-old son. His first time at the cinema. He loved it, and I had a great time as well. Yeah, I agree about the paper-thin plot, but generally I had a blast.
For me, it would've strengthened the film if Mario and Bowser had faced off early on, where he then loses Luigi during that battle. That would've made a rematch so much stronger. There's no connection between Mario and Bowser at all, and while I do like Bowser's incredibly-thin motivations (felt almost meta), it would've been nice if there had been a stronger reason to face off. But yeah, was good. I've got that stupid Peaches song stuck in my head now though (thanks, Jack Black :P).

I think there's a good foundation for a lot of the characters, the problem is that the movie kind of rushes through establishing their characters and the relationships they have, so there's not much time for us to truly get to know them. I ultimately think the movie works in that I get who these characters are and why they do what they do, but I really think the movie would have benefited from a longer runtime so we could get more invested in the characters and it doesn't feel like it's in too much of a hurry to get to the big action-y setpieces.
I will say there's more to Mario in the movie that you give him credit for, though. He's not completely a blank slate, he's an ambitious and adventurous character, eager to try new ventures and tackle new obstacles even when he's discouraged by everyone around him. Something else the movie also drives home really hard is Mario's determinator personality, no matter what happens, he never gives up, which compliments his ambitious personality. I'd say it's a good translation of the Mario from the games, in that it helps explain why this otherwise blank slate character is so gung-ho on journeying out to rescue the princess from Bowser, especially compared to his more reluctant brother, Luigi. Actually, that's another aspect I really liked about Mario, how protective he is about his brother; maybe this is just coming from me reading those scripts for the live action Mario movie, but not only am I fine with there being no conflict between Mario and Luigi, I love that their love for each other is one of their defining qualities, in that Mario will constantly do what he can to protect Luigi, and Luigi will do whatever he can to support Mario, whether it be the actual bad guys or even their own family going against them. So no, I don't think Mario is completely "generic" in this movie, but there's definitely room to flesh stuff out more.
I will agree with you somewhat when it comes to Toad, though, and that's mostly because he's not given that much to do. He helps out once or twice, but otherwise he's just kind of there. There IS still to suggest a deeper personality, like how Toad is also adventurous and eager to prove himself, but none of it is explicit and requires some reading between the lines. On that note, I'm in general agreement with most of what you said, or at least I can see why you'd critique certain parts and don't really have anything to say in its defense. My general experience with the Mario movie is that it was a lot of fun, I was enthralled the entire time, and I'd gladly see it again. Aside from pacing issue, the only thing I didn't really care for were the non-Mario songs used throughout the movie. Some were fine, but others, particularly when they used "Take On Me" just felt out-of-place to me. The Mario and Nintendo fan in me wants to give it a 10/10, but I'm settling for a 8/10 here.

@@ColinLooksBack If you want my opinion on the Rabbids: they at least have a reason to exist compared to the Rabbids. As for the Lorax, the only thing in the movie that opposes the source material (and the message in general) is a b-plot that made Thneedville look sunny and clean when the book depicts it as desolate and polluted.
Also, in actuality, Mario is more like his inspiration: Popeye. Both have real-life jobs that are dangerous to common folk, they use edible food as powerups to enhance their capabilities, have a love triangle with a rival over the same female lead, who in turn can be a capable character in her own right, and had been viewed as a virtuous hero not by being a normal person in everyday life, but rather a chivalrous superhero defending the weak and fighting bullies.

They know that all they need to make people come out in droves to see this movie is the references and the spectacle. I thought the movie was okay, it had some entertaining characters, those being the Kongs, Bowser and his Koopa army and the disturbed Luma, well crafted animation and original music, but I’m critical of the use of the need of popular actors as the characters, the use of 80’s music in some scenes and the excessive references to the other games in the franchise. It honestly makes me want to one day produce and write my own animated adaption of an IP that doesn’t feel like some modern big studio/corporation mish mash.

absolutely loved this movie & would recommend it to fans/newcomers alike.(deserves all the praise it's gotten/being in the 5th top animated movies.:3)
while i had issues like i wish luigi had a subplot escaping(with how luigi's mansion was going to be in it/the castle having those vibes and king boo appearing would've loved luigi running into him alongside boos/portrait ghost,e. gadd or escaping to the desert kingdom meeting daisy.),we saw a few more kongs(with how even eddie the mean old yettie from the cartoon appear would've liked to see lanky, tiny or candy with how even kiddy appeared.),the middle could've been a bit longer(replace the yoshi valley to give the stinger more weight/mario attempting to ride one and the cut part of the cheep cheep bridge.),a few characters appeared(with how toadette and toadsworth who hasn't appeared in years were going to be in it but don't find as bad as recent paper mario.) and the pop songs in a few areas could've been cut(i love take on me but that version of jungle hijinks should've been in it.) i heavily disagree with the character angle(disney's films have that problem more with character especially in the cgi ones like frozen being bare or showing they can't work outside the 1st movie/showing it's huge flaws from over-saturation.).
the pros completely outweighed it's small flaws as the plot was simple but well handled(compared to how nonsensically convoluted the 1993 movie was it's more people/critics definitely need to realize stories and games don't need to be a 100 hours long to be a story as a lot of disney plots even during the renaissance are bare or not that deep as they are pretty basic.) ,the characters are strong(illuminations problem alongside being generic was the characters outside gru in despicable me not being that developed at all, pandering, missed the characters likability or are jerks.).
as i loved mario(prefer charles but did like him and chris did a good job in the context of the everyman feel mario shares with mickey mouse that he wasn't basic.),toad(prefer him over the games/makes me want toadette in shorts with him as i loved how loyal he was to his friends.),kamek, spike(like he goes from being a spiteful from them leaving jerk to actually having respect for the bros. cheering them on/would love wario & waluigi working for him.),bowser(loved mario having a unknown rival aspect to it but also keeping his adorkable love of peach with that funny song while showing he can be a threat even more than the games that i'd want to see his relations with the koopalings/jr.) ,the nihilistic luma(with how peach's origins had her not be from the mushroom kingdom/originally being her relative makes me wonder if rosalina will be tied to her and even more what she'll be like.).
dk(like it showed the difference between their series and seth rogen was great as him that i'd love to see a spinoff to see the other kongs as i loved diddy, dixie & chunky being a trio and be awesome seeing king k. rool.)/cranky(do think they could've directed his voice more like the dk cartoon as he sounded like bentley from sly cooper at points but liked he had a better relationship with his son compared to how ornery he is in the country games.),definitely princess peach(had a few issues at the beginning mostly the "he's not important" line but she wasn't too perfect compared to disney princesses/rey as it showed the difference between the worlds which the toads also showed, taking care of her kingdom with the toads loyalty to her and am so glad she joined the adventure as the pointless kidnappings need to just stop already which a zelda movie better take note with as she's worse with it,thought her relationship with mario was adorable that compared to the games having cold feet that i really want to see them in a relationship but am also happy seeing them as friends and loved her beginnings explaining how she became the princess.) & especially luigi(his relationship with mario was just as adorable as the games & loved charlie day as him that i really want princess daisy in the sequel seeing the perky, sassy tomboy's sweet relationship with the green thunder.)
alongside the marketing(really loved and excited me just as much as the movie itself especially the figurines that i hope we see more of for the sequels/other nintendo series films.:3) the references that i didn't lose focus compared to others(where the 1993 tried way too hard.)/recent disney has less character than it(considering mickey hasn't even gotten his own real film.) and am excited for it's potential with sequels & nintendo pictures for other nintendo series(really want a star fox or kid icarus film/anime with pit & palutena meeting the mario bros. as i loved that reference so much.) that i'd really love to see as this movies a A-.(maybe even lead to a super smash bros. adaptation if built up properly like what detective pikachu's producer brought up that i agree or even just a crossover with movie sonic as both gave their series a breath of fresh air to be introduced and loved.)

The only thing I disagree with you on is Peach; I think maybe, if they had gone with the classic plot, it could've solved her characterization problem. She could've played a more active role in sequels, allowing us to watch her journey and grow along with her, instead of making her another Mary Sue right off the bat. (Which by the way, is the exact same problem Disney has with their remakes.) But that's just how I see it. Otherwise, I still think you were exactly on-point. Maybe you should do more reviews! =)

I saw it in 3D last night. I just enjoyed the refferences and got most of them. But it is nothing more than visual fluff with a charismatic Bowser. I was just along for the ride, and half an hour later I forgot most of the plot. It was a fun event, but

Never saw either. Secret Life of Pets just didn't look all that appealing. I didn't really care for the first Sing, so I didn't bother with the second.

@@georgerobertson7010 I barely remember the first one. Haven't seen the second, not really planning on it, either. In general, I think the first Despicable Me and this Mario movie are the only the Illumination movies I've really liked thus far.

I like horror movies, but I'm not too interested in seeing this one. I'm not totally opposed to a scary Pooh movie, but I hear that this one's just not that good. If I'm going to watch a Winnie the Pooh slasher, I want to have a really fun experience.

They ''Mary sued'' Princess Peach. Of course they did. It is to disrespect the Mario character(and the male audience by proxy)

I disagree about her being "Mary sued"(which has lost its meaning) because she's been a badass in the recent games and even her OWN spinoff game. And it didn't affect the Mario franchise and the "male audience".
