The drivers in Salem are the worst
It amazes me how these ppl have obtained a driver's license if they can't cause accident by either showing no consideration for others or not paying attention

We’re currently in western Kentucky. Way off the beaten path. The weather is generally quite nice. Humidity can sometimes get a bit sticky. Our small city only has about 800 other souls. About 20 minutes from Paducah and 2 1/2 hours from Nashville.
Keep up the good work. I’m a new subscriber. 😊

Salem is an interesting city. It spreads across two counties (Marion and Polk) separated by the Willamette River.
I owned a house in West Salem (Polk County) not far from the high school. It was a beautiful neighborhood with a natural spring fed creek running through many backyards.
The city itself has been traditionally clean and the architecture of the capital building is unique. The cherry blossoms 🌸 are stunning.
A good percentage of the population are state of Oregon employees. I worked briefly for ODOT and found it to very much be us vs them. Bizarre dynamics.
The police department is poorly trained. They regularly hire brand new officers and put them on the streets with a training officer without attending the police academy. They have 6 months to begin an academy and Salem PD uses this time to the detriment of the people and the new officers.
Lastly, I don’t think Salem sucks, but it needs to hit the gym.
You said the homeless crisis is unavoidable. With all due respect to you I disagree. This pacifist government in the state provides the homeless with shelter, food stamps, SSI and in many cases debit cards 💳 preloaded with $3000-5000 each.
There is a difference between compassion and letting the inmates run the system into the ground.
Homelessness has many causes. Mental illness and drug addiction are the primary causes of homelessness. Instead of preloaded debit cards, how about investing in mental health services and drug addiction services? Offer services to help push those people toward independence and self sustainability.
It is a complex issue and the homeless should be treated with respect and dignity.
    Great video!

@@SalemOR What type of lifestyle do you want to have? Which community works best for you? North, south, east or west? Do you have kids. Which school do you want them to be in. Do you make enough income to support the lifestyle you want. Those are serious questions to ask yourself before moving here. Do you enjoy going to parks? If so Salem is not for you. I wouldn't consider any park for kids in this town unless you live in a rich community that has a community park. Honestly Keizer is better than Salem these days, but there. Lol

And that's not saying much about Keizer. Keizer is grosser by the day. It's a retirement community primarily but recently some gang from California has just arrived and are tagging everything. Right in front of me at a stop light on River Rd the other day. A masked man came out of nowhere and tagged a sign by us really fast, and ran. The crime here is getting bolder. But the cops here don't mess around. But if LA spreads like a disease here and bleeds in, I fear they'll just stop doing anything altogether like Portland and other crappy BLUE states.

After living in Salem since 2001, I can say that it is depressing with a lot of drug and alcohol problems. So yes, there are homeless people in Salem. One thing that it had going for it was the lack of traffic, however as more people move here that is just not the case anymore. Obviously from a Portlanders perspective commuting by car here seems like heaven, but for the locals traffic has increased. Take for example the line to get across the west Salem bridge during rush hour. In terms of restaurant options, things seems to be improving with new options that did not exist here before. I just hope Salem does not get completely gentrified leading to the locals being displaced.

Well, since you have only lived in Salem since 2001, I will forgive your ignorance. I have lived in Salem since 1975. The Marion Street Bridge has always been a problem for traffic during rush hour. Even in my childhood, getting across that bridge during 5:00pm traffic was a pain. But going down Lancaster during 5:00 traffic is a pain. Going down Keubler (before they widened it) was a pain. What city this size doesn't have traffic issues at 5:00pm Monday through Friday?!?! We all know what a joy the Portland-Metro area is during 5:00 traffic! Hell, even Keizer has traffic issues around 5:00pm. Please stop your double-standards. One standard is one to many.

That’s a great question. Downtown is a destination so people do end up hanging out in the area. But to your point there isn’t a lot of natural foot traffic that flows in from the surrounding neighborhoods.

i am 26 years old and i have lived in salem my entire life. (born 1998) i dont remember the homeless problem always being like this, if my memory serves me right there were way less homeless people here when i was a kid but around my early teens is when it started to ramp up a lot.
marion square park has always been a large epicenter for homeless congregation, as well as underneath the bridges right nearby.
i vividly remember when i was a little kid asking my dad if he would take me to that park and he would always say no because there were too many homeless people there sleeping on the playground equipment and whatnot.
i assumed that the reason most homeless people congregated in that area was because the union gospel mission was very close by for many years until they tore it down recently. now the arches building right across the street from marion square park is where i see lots of homeless people congregating. (that building used to be a codwell banker building that my uncle worked in).
the recent law legalizing all drugs hasnt really helped the issue much in my opinion. i feel like people hear that this city is a safe haven for drugs and they flock here. i see homeless people either shooting up or smoking from oddly shaped glassware out in the open almost daily.
besides those few blocks of downtown i would say salem is a very nice, clean, and safe place to live. the rest of downtown inhabited by local businesses is pleasant to patronize on a nice sunny day and most people here do not litter.
i wouldnt want to live in any other city in oregon honestly.

WHERE are the homeless! I think I saw ONE during the entire walk!! This Salem tour reminded me of Boise, one of the CLEANEST cities in the country! It's abominable for IGNORANCE to speak out so asaertively. Whoever made that comment about Salem had to be ingested with hallucinogens. Geez.

This video just about had me wanting to sign on the dotted line. Lol
For all intents & purposes, I am leaning toward convincing my sweetie that Keizer is best for our needs. But I also love all the neighborhoods you are showing in South Salem. Keep up the great work❣❣❣

Based on what you've communicated so far, I feel like Keizer would be the best fit for your need of having easy commutability. And although selfishly I love Keizer, Newberg is pretty charming too.
Both are worth considering. Very different, but both are great in my opinion.

Looks so bland and sad. Makes me sad:( I would like to add your attitude is what the place needs and if more people embrace positivity, maybe such people will find solutions to give these places a more uplifting atmosphere:)

Salem is amazing. Homeless are in every town. I just enjoy my 5 days of work for 2 days off just to pay my bills most weeks it's 6 days work one off. I enjoy slavery😂🎉 modern slavery. Makes it sound a tiny bit better

Bend has gone bananas. I don't even know what to think about the cost of living there, it's way too similar to the Bay Area now. I remember when it was just a little hole in the wall town.

Oregon is a great place to live, but isn't the right place for everyone.
I'd recommend visiting the State to ensure it meets your needs. Where are you watching from?
