You can tell you're the type to fully dedicated yourself to whatever it is that you're pursuing. Drums like a computer, looks like a sculpture made in Greece.
This drumming is on such a high level, and to see it executed so tastefully with this strange complex music gives me a total eargasm. Listening to this makes me think about and appreciate music in a new way. I literally had multiple epiphanies watching this.
You're a fucking beast, Travis! You're my favorite drummer and it's a lot of fun watching all the stuff you come up with. Really creative and different from anything I've ever seen. I honestly wish a lot more people get to know your drumming. They don't know what they're missing out on!
Oh man, there are so many things I want to comment about this video. The amazing and, in my humble opinion, unique band and music, the incredible and professional drumming etc. In short, your work is pure inspiration master Orbin!
Damn..........I can't even. Ya. Absolutely loved the little parts you added that contrasted some of the spoken word segments. Was a "weird" over all experience, but very pleasurable. I can't wait to visit Lucy while listening to this. One of a kind sound all around for me. Also, I'd say this is probably your most impressive work so far at least in my opinion. Not sure I'd ever be able to fully learn all the different variations on the cymbals, and other tiny nuances you added. Man.. Fuck ya!
You are so talented man, please never stop playing the drums. Found you from SEA back in the day, so glad I stayed with you and subscribed to your youtube all those years ago. -Ryan
this is amazing stuff. i can definitely appreciate the poetic side of what the "vocalist?" is doing, but MAAAAAN this could really be something with the right guy on the mic. the lyrics are amazing, so just sing it lol. everything else is so exceptional i can still dig it. it will probably grow on me and be one of those things i couldnt imagine being any other way. instrumental copies available?
I would be eager to see what this sounds like with no narrative vocals. It would tell a different story. :D Either way, you guys are fukin crazy talented with what you do. The melodies with all of the guitars work so well together. And Travis' fucking incredible drumming takes it to another level.
Doctor Orbin, considering the extreme level of cultural and musical contents this can be classified as "High-Cultural-Content Progressive Technical Metal", don't you think?
Hi! The spoken parts are written and recorded by Eden Kupermintz, our resident narrator. They are part of a larger science fiction short-story cycle, called Ex Nihilo. You can read that in its entirety here (there are several additional stories that didn't make it onto the record): ledaber.wordpress.com/shared/ If you would like to download the tunes, that can be done here (lyrics embedded for convenience): instar1.bandcamp.com/ :) Cheers for the interest!
Instar, Thank you!! That's really interesting and not the answer I was expecting. I thought it may have been an older more well known piece of work. That's much more exciting that it is a current. It's very well written. I'll definitely be reading it.
Track 4, Narrative Spire, is the only exception. That interlude begins with a poem by Percy Shelley ("One Word is Too Often Profaned") and is followed by second poem by E.E. Cummings ("Sunset"). It was fun to briefly pause from the future-oriented sci fi prose and sling shot into the past.
This is very multidimensional piece of work. It's very thoughtful and thought-provoking. Like I could listen to it once, and be amazed, sure, but to listen again and again and read the poems and the stories and understand all of it together....it's just dense and has depth which is great I think because it provides multiple different ways to engage with one piece of collaborative work.
Hi Travis, great drumming as Always, but how do you experience your VF headphones? I have them too, but sometimes the low end spill is too much in some way... Thanks for your answer and rock on man!!! Cheers, Jeroen.
I only have the kick and some of the kit (via two SM57s) along with my click in the cans, so I'm not picky. I certainly wouldn't listen to music or mix on them, though. Thanks!
Yo travis. What criteria in the music youre playing to determines if you play with coated skins or clear? Or is it just whatever youre feeling like playing at that time?
Several factors: the 'vibe' of the material, if I want more overtones or more 'punch', what I'm performing, etc. Generally speaking, if it's aggressive (prog, metal, etc.) then I reach for clear; if it's laid-back with more space between the notes (rock, jazz, etc.) then I reach for coated.
I do, I always use coated PSIII. I've been taping a piece of towel over the Falam Slams if I need a similar tone but with less attack/punch. The plug-ins that shape the EQ are quite minor, so most of that 'wetness' is my playing and the head.
hey sorry for the late reply. thanks for the info a while ago i bought the same dimensions for my drum set that you have and i wasn't disappointed. i love how k's sound but havent gotten any yet. could you recommend one thing someone can practice that could help them become a better drummer if you could only pick one?
It was an absolute honor to mix your drums with this album, and seeing these parts played after hearing them so much is really something else!
Aw shucks. You did a great job, kudos!
This is my most favorite drum performance ever and it is what inspired me to start playing seriously again. Thanks for sharing.

Hahah, many thanks, man.

What is the spoken segment in this from? I'd like to read it more carefully.

Zappa shirt?
yes indeed

Does this apply to your kick drum as well? Seems like you usually have the coated skin on there

Barehand/barefoot practice, practicing without sticks or pedals. I sell a lesson on this that goes into great detail out of my BigCartel store.
Wow, what kind of sticks are those???
Vic firth ralph hardimon hammers.
Meh, needs more cowbell IMO
Sounds amazing, but the slam poetry kind of ruins it for me. Way too distracting. The drumming is nuts tho.
