i don't think there's anything wrong with masculine or feminine as descriptors. masculine doesn't have to be male, feminine doesn't have to be female, etc. i'm a woman but i like more masculine interior design
I agree! I think Masculinity and Femininity are salient concepts in our society, and when we use them we evoke a commonly conceived aesthetic. Yes they’re gendered terms but we don’t always have to use them that way, or assume that people have to be into one or the other depending on our gender. I’m non-binary and I love traditionally feminine colors but more masculine shapes and forms. It’s a fun combo!
Me too! I'm a bit of a "curated maximalist" (but not in the traditional sense)... I much prefer masculine design over feminine. I find myself browsing r/malelivingspace more than r/femalelivingspace. I just really prefer dark, moody spaces. (Nearly black walls, natural wood/wood grain, dark leathers, metals, etc.) I do love more feminine wallpaper designs though.

I think the "waiting for my forever home" is the issue of buying expensive pieces for the home you have NOW and then having to sell and not make your money back in order to them buy the item you actually wanted that fits in that dream space. I think there is value in not being too far to either extreme, whether it's over consuming trends and not curating 'forever' pieces or also 'compromising' and knowing when to wait vs throw too much money to temporary projects even those funds could go towards getting out off debt and home ownership Dave Ramsey style.
I agree with some of what you said for sure but why can’t you use those pieces in a new place? For example, a beautiful rug, a credenza, a chair, etc could be used in any house. I have bought cheap thing and replaced a few times and then I’ve bought some higher quality solid pieces and I’ll keep them forever.
@@ellaanvari7737 That can be work for some but if you're moving far away then realistically you won't be able to take those pieces with you. When I moved I had to leave behind an important family heirloom bc the shipping was too expensive.

Today is one of my brother’s birthday. (The one who lives in DC). I sent him a cool concert ukulele this year. However, last year I’d sourced a pile of maybe 10 nearly antique travel brochures, maps etc from DC that we’re all from 1930-1935 (I think). I spent a couple hours in a very little very local antique shop pawing through 10s of thousands of post cards, scraps of paper, etc until I had a stack of maybe 25 things very local to him. (He’s in eckington area of DC). Then wittled the stack down to a reasonable number. I thought they were so neat to see prices of things then, familiar to him streets and landmarks and of course finding his now house on the different little maps. I love maps; the older the cooler. Anywho, it took more time than money. I bet it was less than $20 for the items I got him. It’s a unique gift but super personalized to him. It then makes awesome decor. One leaflet, when totally unfolded had a dc map on the back that he framed. I’m rambling, obviously. However, I bring it up because I’m thinking of him on his bday, but also tiny things like that can also really add to the personality of your home decor. Every bit as much as vases, lamps, etc. Anyway, great list. I took a screenshot of two that I plan on following.

I like how you spoke about how the creative /design process means putting yourself out there even it doesn’t always look great. I find people really do “wait” to produce something that is “perfect” but in my opinion, it ends up looking really cookie-cutter. I love environments and pieces of art where you can almost see the process in the resolved product. I’ve just subscribed- I watched your “organisational video” and am hooked 💫
I would say yin (female or moon) and yang (male or sun), capturing the principal without naming genders. I loved this video. Your selections are superbly curated.
I sometimes say yin and yang, with a hat tip to east Asian cultures for the concepts. Everything in the world is a mix of yin and yang, even if it's a tiny bit of salt (yang) which enhances the flavor of a dessert (yin) or a bit of sweet in a savory dish which does the opposite. The pendulum swing of design sways back and forth, too: art nouveau is quite yin and mid century more yang but I love them mixed together for this reason.
I’m an interior designer here are some of my lesser known accounts for inspiration..Alexander Grace Interiors, Norman Peterson, Matthew Rose, Forden & Co Builders!! I think some would align with your style!
I was thrilled to see the room with the antique crazy quilt and red checked chair - I just bought a crazy quilt last week and it's hanging on my wall and it completely made the room. Dated 1884, it brings life to the room and the energy of the maker.
You are such a breath of fresh air mixed with realness and lots of sunshine! I look so much forward to your videos. Thank you for inspiring me and the rest of us to be more creative 🙂...and REAL!
I say put stuff in your rooms that you love, that evoke feeling, of love, peace, happy thoughts, who gives a shit if it’s “professional” looking? It can be that simple❤️
5:40 Couldn't look at anything but the incredible architectural windows in here. I'm freaking obsessed. I might need to get a good corporate job now so I can build my own home so I can custom build these windows.
Aloha from Hawaii.🤙 While I agree that masculine and feminine aren't bad descriptors because they evoke tropes that are easily understood (with variations by culture), I also agree that they feel 'laden' or 'yoked' with potential for appearing insensitive, unaware, or limited. Bummer. If I had to replace the terms I would consider SUPPORTIVE (m) vs NURTURING (f). I think if I heard an interior designer say (while showing me images), "I really like this supportive style for your living room. The structured leather, the substantial millwork, and some architectural plants (think bird of paradise or mother-in-laws tongue) ... all give me a very clear vibe and that vibe is 'support.' Whatever you're in the mood to do, watch the game, take a nap, write a manifesto, take over the world, THIS room in THIS style supports you in conquering your goals. In contrast, I feel like the circular pattern in the floor tiles and this sweeping staircase here in the entry and barely separated from the living room demands a more nurturing style. Leafier plants (think wispy palms, wandering jade, or a variegated croton), flowing sheers (even if they aren't 'in the wind' per se), a delicately carved antique -or- organic sun-bleached table, and a floral or pastoral oil painting." I think I would adopt those words from the designer and use them, too. ALTERNATIVELY, I think SCULPTED (m) vs ORGANIC (f) also work. FIRM vs FLEXIBLE. HARD vs SOFT. RECTILINEAR vs CURVILINEAR. DISTINCT vs INTEGRATED. GEOMETRIC vs LIQUID. PRINT vs CURSIVE. BLOCK vs SCRIPT. ELEMENTAL vs AMOEBIC. Hahaha. I dare you to use the word amoebic to describe feminine! 🤣
Love checking in with you, you bring a calm over me I can't explain. Inspiration comes in many forms, your one of mine. On a serious note, the designers featured here were amazing. especially the English woman and the woman talking about ceilings. I too have over looked my ceilings as part of the over all finished look of my rooms, but recently put wood beams in the living room and an ornate pendant molding around my chandelier to bring the eye up. so that note of design really does work. It has transformed both spaces into a place I would never live without again. On a side note completely off topic, I loved your braids. Stay charming and real, much appreciation!!!
Okay, at the risk of sounding like a creepo; I just found your channel and binge watched your videos over the last few days and I’m in love with you lol. Rita Konig - I love English Cottage Core and to me she's Modern English Cottage Core with a touch of retro/vintage and of course love you too, that's why I watch you. I'm gonna go check out Rita's sight as soon as I'm done here. I don't have an ounce of decor in me, so I need all the help I can get. Thanks again Caroline! :)
Great video for those like myself who love interior design but wanting to learn about different style's..as well as the freedom to be creative. I love that you emphasize there are no rules! Thank you!
I'd love to see a video on other content creators, not necessarily professional interior designers, who have a decorating style in their homes which you like.
This video has me so inspired. I sell a lot of vintage clothing and hard goods on Poshmark, and the staging and photography is my favorite part. I love the mix of modern and vintage and traditional and masculine/feminine styles.
To answer one of your last questions on which of the designers I liked, I've got to be honest that none are really my personal style. What I've valued from your design videos is the way to find your own style, the ways to put together elements you like and create something cohesive, as well as non-style-specific design tips or lessons. The stuff that's agnostic to the specific design but the thought process, the decorating process. Really cool to hear you discussing why you like these designers though, way more specific than my usual of looking for the ~same vibes~
Settled down with my coffee to watch this on a lovely Saturday morning, and lo and behold we have the same mug! Guess the guest one was for me today :)
I LOVED ALL the designers you reviewed here! And... it's ok to say 'masculine' and 'femenine'... these are ways to describe some interiors and I would also use these words... don't even apologize. Saludos from Mexico!
I love love love your content. I am a psych major about to finish my bachelor and a photographer. But I am obsessed with interior decoration and design. It’s the love of my life. Can you do a video on how you became an interior designer? I want to be one but I’m dreading getting a whole new degree.
Thank you thank you THANK YOU...I am relatively new to IG am now following all your suggestions because your video left me wanting to know more about each designer. So generous of you ❤ & I really appreciate it.
Have you considered using yin and yang? Fritjof Capra introduces this duality in his book The Tao of Physics. This concept is also used in fashion (Kibbe and Essences)
You mentioned alternatievs to masculine/femine when describing designs and I usually use: masculine-darker, heavier, rustic, minimalistic, etc and for feminine- airy, light, soft, clean, etc. Focusing on the description of the pieces more so than who it's for. I make candles and I've had to learn that all the ones I would make specifically for women the guys usually liked and vice versa so it's definitely a challenge opening up descriptions sometimes lol Also! I love this laid back chat about different designers you like. I want to have these types of chats with friends but no one wants to listen to me ramble about stuff we can't afford 😅
Hahah “but no one wants to listen to me ramble” girl I relate so hard. Why do u think I was forced to start a TH-cam channel 😂 Love your thoughts on masculine / feminine too 🙌

To me, you are a perfect human. PS. I rarely comment on TH-cam but you are special.
I'm shifting my design tastes to fit my lifestyle needs in my new home (starting from nothing) I'm not even taking my prized dinosaur bone. Anyway, my old style was traditional with heavy emphasis on natural elements and now I'm moving toward Japandi. These masculine designs are so intriguing, they might be the happy marriage of my through lines! Thank you for sharing!
What visions, I can't wait to dig into some of these sights. Studio Hinton had the coolest bathtub. All I can say is "WOW." Can't wait to see your next feed, thank you again. A fun way to send Saturday with Caroline and coffee at work.
i know you posted this a while ago, but if you're still looking for suggestions for alternatives to "masculine" and "feminine" for design, here's mine: Firstly, i think those words as style descriptors don't have as much meaning as other descriptors (such as mid-century, scandinavian, industrial, shabby chic, french country, art deco, etc). Even if the space doesn't fit into another existing style, using "masculine" and "feminine" doesn't actually provide too much information since every single person has a different perspective of what those words mean; and when we pay attention, the aspects we connect to those words are completely based on social constructs of what being a man and a woman is, even if not intentionally (we might describe a room as "masculine" if it has harder edges, colder tones, and as "feminine" if it has delicate patterns, warm colors, as examples), so we end up propagating those ideas subconsciously; and we can see how these things are connected because there are so many women who happily embrace liking "masculine" styles but we rarely see the opposite. Since they don't really work as design styles, try to identify what elements make you want to describe the space with one of those words, and use that as the one-word descriptor instead. Examples of words that can be used to describe the overall feel of a room: Sculptural, ornate, linear, contrasting, earthy, textured, geometric, organic, translucent, cozy, moody, airy, etc. Trying to find more descriptive words might even lead us to a deeper exploration of the space. And not everything needs to fit into a one-word style, as most awesome designs usually don't (including the ones you design). You ended up describing the rooms you used "masculine" for in more detail afterwards and it worked amazingly to give me an idea of what elements actually inspired you in them. Also i'm non-binary and this shit is hard as fuck for me too, there's a lot we're unlearning every day. i'm a new subscriber and really love your videos ~
I just stumbeld across your channel and literally binge watched your videos. Love your way of showing your ideas and thoughts- I really get university vibes, because I'm learning so much.

That means SO much to me Brenda, thank you! I take a lot of care in the sponsors I choose and I’m so glad it comes through in an enjoyable way ❤️
Your humor plus beautiful braids. What a treat !
I like that you like anything else than white, sleek and minimalist. I just hate anything that reminds me my office. At home, I like to feel homy.
I would say yin (female or moon) and yang (male or sun), capturing the principal without naming genders. I loved this video. Your selections are superbly curated.
Yin and yang were the words I thought of as well!
Ah you’re the best, thanks Ciara!! So glad you’re here and I can’t wait to check these out❤️❤️❤️🥰
@@Caroline_Winkler no problem! Also just realized it’s Petersen with an E haha!
I have genuinely never wanted a thrive market membership until you talked about the dates😂😂
Hahaha the dates are a whole lifestyle. I’m so glad you understand
I was thrilled to see the room with the antique crazy quilt and red checked chair - I just bought a crazy quilt last week and it's hanging on my wall and it completely made the room. Dated 1884, it brings life to the room and the energy of the maker.
you're seriously becoming one of my faves on here!! I appreciate all the inspiration.
Thanks girl, I’m so glad!
A stunning excursion. This is a visual feast... A virtual EYEgasm. Thank you SO much!
You are such a breath of fresh air mixed with realness and lots of sunshine! I look so much forward to your videos. Thank you for inspiring me and the rest of us to be more creative 🙂...and REAL!
Yes!!!❤️❤️❤️ love this, thanks girl!
YES to Rita Konig and Heidi C! So much inspiration from those ladies. Also loved hearing about some new to me designers 💛
Ahh I knew you’d love them! Hope you’re doing well lady ❤️still loving your channel
Rita is one of my favorites!
Rita Konig is a favorite designer of mine. I smiled when you featured her in your video.
Ooooo, very interesting! Thank you! (I’m fine with “masculine” and “feminine” as descriptors.)
We have the same taste big up from the uk love you I’m fully subscribed
❤️🙌big hug to you in the UK 😍
I say put stuff in your rooms that you love, that evoke feeling, of love, peace, happy thoughts, who gives a shit if it’s “professional” looking? It can be that simple❤️
💯🙌
Rita Konig. You could listen to her for hours. Thank for this video.
Studiomellone and Brian Paquette are right up my alley. Thank you for sharing this.
I loved seeing who you admire. Terrific idea for a video.
Thank you, I am following all of them myself now. I love design and architecture.
1000better is most inspirational to my current design focus. The others are great. I looked at each one you suggested!
Loveeee her
I love it!!! I love how timeless the designs are!! So many are too trendy!!!
Okay, at the risk of sounding like a creepo; I just found your channel and binge watched your videos over the last few days and I’m in love with you lol. But wait there’s more hear me out: In a long lost soul sister I never knew I had kind of way. You’re hilarious, and real, and beautiful, and interesting, and so dang cool, and really special and I wish you lived in Portland so we could be besties :) haha! Anyway I just wanted to send my encouragement because your videos are great and also tell you how awesome I think you are because there’s too much hate out there in the world and there should be more building each other up! 😊 Have a great one!
yes, agreed, mugs you love, need to be in at least 2's to share with a guest xo
I love your personality and tips. New sub ❤
Been watching your videos for weeks. Been seeing that mug for weeks. Just bought three....
Great video for those like myself who love interior design but wanting to learn about different style's..as well as the freedom to be creative. I love that you emphasize there are no rules! Thank you!
I'd love to see a video on other content creators, not necessarily professional interior designers, who have a decorating style in their homes which you like.
love this idea!
If you have a mug that you're crazy about, buy another to share with a guest (and as a backup in case you or someone else breaks the first one)
Wow accurate. I need the insurance for sure
My favorite TH-camr - keep it up! ❤️
Dohhh thanks Morgan❤️❤️🥰
This video has me so inspired. I sell a lot of vintage clothing and hard goods on Poshmark, and the staging and photography is my favorite part. I love the mix of modern and vintage and traditional and masculine/feminine styles.
Ahh yes I just love a mix!
I adore Brian Paquette! I hear what you’re saying about the masculine/feminine dynamic. It is hard these days. And that Mellone! Wow
Settled down with my coffee to watch this on a lovely Saturday morning, and lo and behold we have the same mug! Guess the guest one was for me today :)
Ahhh!! Girl we mind meldin’
Loved it and so thankful we have you on TH-cam - love your new bedroom design as well, gorg!
Ah thanks Rhiannon!
She has a great laugh!
I LOVED ALL the designers you reviewed here! And... it's ok to say 'masculine' and 'femenine'... these are ways to describe some interiors and I would also use these words... don't even apologize. Saludos from Mexico!
Thanks for sharing! I love all the inspiration, including yours!
Aw thanks!
I love love love your content. I am a psych major about to finish my bachelor and a photographer. But I am obsessed with interior decoration and design. It’s the love of my life. Can you do a video on how you became an interior designer? I want to be one but I’m dreading getting a whole new degree.
Slowly watching all your videos. You’re awesome
Thanks for the insta inspo
Thank you thank you THANK YOU...I am relatively new to IG am now following all your suggestions because your video left me wanting to know more about each designer. So generous of you ❤ & I really appreciate it.
Have you considered using yin and yang? Fritjof Capra introduces this duality in his book The Tao of Physics. This concept is also used in fashion (Kibbe and Essences)
Loved this video I do follow some of them. Oh and you look precious with those braids 🙋🏻♀️🙋🏻♀️🙋🏻♀️
Great recommendations, thanks 🙏
if you haven't already, can you make a video explaining how you got into interior design?
I will! ❤️😍thanks for the request, I think I need to
@@Caroline_Winkler yayyy can’t wait!🤩
You mentioned alternatievs to masculine/femine when describing designs and I usually use: masculine-darker, heavier, rustic, minimalistic, etc and for feminine- airy, light, soft, clean, etc. Focusing on the description of the pieces more so than who it's for. I make candles and I've had to learn that all the ones I would make specifically for women the guys usually liked and vice versa so it's definitely a challenge opening up descriptions sometimes lol
Also! I love this laid back chat about different designers you like. I want to have these types of chats with friends but no one wants to listen to me ramble about stuff we can't afford 😅
Hahah “but no one wants to listen to me ramble” girl I relate so hard. Why do u think I was forced to start a TH-cam channel 😂
Love your thoughts on masculine / feminine too 🙌
Finally got time to watch this! Very nice-it love historical design with any odd or modern twist. Soon, we'll be looking for your designs! I believe in you! Keep on steppin! 🐾
Thanks Jane!
You got me at Muji. ❤️
Caroline! I’m dying!!! I’ve been binge watching all your videos and came to this one and DIED when you mentioned my sweet friend Stef Turner! I messaged her IMMEDIATELY and told her how you’re my new best friend and and that she needs to stalk you like I have been the last few days!
Hi, I stumbled on one of your videos a week ago and immediately subscribed (I am a subscriber of only 2 channels and yours is my 2nd). Interior design is one of my passions and I love your designs. I learned a lot. I also enjoy your mix of contents. I am in tech as well and it is just so cool to find your channel. Love your video on quitting job. Please keep doing what you are doing.
Love that!!❤️ love hearing how you let your taste evolve too🙌
Rita Konig is the bomb!
What visions, I can't wait to dig into some of these sights. Studio Hinton had the coolest bathtub. All I can say is "WOW." Can't wait to see your next feed, thank you again. A fun way to send Saturday with Caroline and coffee at work.
Thanks girl❤️❤️
Heidi C is fabulous, I love and adore wallpaper, so stunning
Good for you doing a lot of sponsorship this way you can save money. I taught my kids how to save since their privat schools never taught them
i know you posted this a while ago, but if you're still looking for suggestions for alternatives to "masculine" and "feminine" for design, here's mine:
Firstly, i think those words as style descriptors don't have as much meaning as other descriptors (such as mid-century, scandinavian, industrial, shabby chic, french country, art deco, etc).
You know what, I think @stefmturner hit the nail on the head for me! And apparently I like feminine spaces 😃 Thanks for sharing!!!
There’s a good vibe in your video🙂
Yond interiors!! My fave
i feel u. pinterest is like a trend forecaster while instagram is more curated imo ☺️
Totalllly. A little too trendy too be my main inspo source, but I do still love Pinterest!
Need to know where the wallpaper is from in your video right before you introduce each designer? Love it, love your videos, adore you.
Oh it’s William Morris! Same designer as did my ceiling wallpaper. Lots of retailers sell William Morris prints, I got mine from Spoonflower! So glad you love it!❤️❤️
Love these designers! Found a few feeds to follow! Thank you so much! I love the art hung under the windows.... may have to try an unexpected art spot.
I looove love love how you hype stuff up
As usual, very kewl, informative, entertaining and I get to spend time with you which, to me, is just precious. I think we were sisters or at least best friends in a previous life, lol And I like Rita Konig a lot!
Judith you are always the definition of kewl. Honored to be sisters in a previous life 🥰
@@Caroline_Winkler Thanks, sister! BTW, in a previous life, I worked for a company in NJ that did prepress work for Condenast and Hearst publications. My job was to have the ad pages ready for printing for House Beautiful, Town & County, and Home and Garden magazines. Fun but very stressful.
Oh that’s wild!!! Wow I can’t imagine what that was like.
I am so happy you vibe with Rita Konig....and Andre Mellone could totally get it. btdubs i'm pretty sure that Andre is the person that started the "studio" trend...now so many designers call their firms "studio...(insert last name)"
Really enjoyed this video. I'd never heard of any of those designers. Would love you to do more (designers). Yes to dates in the freezer !!! Been rewatching ur old videos n my heart broke for you when I saw Danny (I, too, parted with my dog as part of breakup of long term relationship and it still hurts 18 years later) 💔 Congrats on new sponsors. Hi from Australia 🇦🇺 xx
Favorite part of my Saturday’s! 🤎
Brian Paquette a fav of mine.
Dates in the freezer?!?!?!?!🤯 Grrl, GENIUS!!
I am based in Seattle, WA and one of my favorite local designers is Michelle Dirkse :)
Ok I liked the “hot” guys dad!!! 😝
And…I must be a designer cause I actually hung a picture on a knee wall one time! Just look at me!!!
Caroline you’re my favorite!!!
🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
This is just refreshing 💙
❤️
I follow a lot of artists on instagram, and I like to use it to look at pretty things. every once in a while when I'm not happy about my feed, I start unfollowing the accounts that no longer post pretty things (in my opinion, aka the "nonsense" 😂). Your bonus tip is the best honestly 👌
🙌 I am also obsessed with dates 🙌 love this video, and was surprised that I actually follow some of these designers already! Love hearing your perspective on designs though, since we definitely see things and notice things differently.
