This is a Cherubino whom the Countess herself would be seduced by! No one has ever looked the part on stage better than Maria Ewing, but I should love to see what Julia would do with it.
She sings the most boring arias in a way that make me fall in love with them like I have never before.. besides the phenomenal clarity and accuracy of sound, the phrasing is Exquisite.. she delivers the melodies to a new maximum
Which boring arias are you referring to? I don't know of any boring arias by Mozart and i don't think Julia sings any boring arias by him or anyone else.
She does sing the occasional boring aria to give it life and charm, as you say: usually virtuoso pieces by minor baroque composers dealing in fiendishnesses without much regard for art. This, however, is hardly one of the boring ones…
How can a melody be rated as boring or not depending on the ability of the performer? It must be the lack-lustre singing not the music itself that makes a difference. This rendition of a popular, not boring, aria from Marriage of Figaro is one of the best.

Sean Gaffney Please, come on! This is not an opera production, it's a concert! Of course she's a soprano, but so many sopranos have sung this popular aria in concerts before, and she has no difficulty in singing the lowest parts of the aria at all. And she's pleasing the audience with a well-known aria as an encore. Let us not put so many boundaries to singers (and listeners), please. Just enjoy the beautiful music and singing!
Julia is considered a baroque soprano and a colouratura mezzo. I don't know how "they" came up with that, but it's been stuck on her and she's been singing that way!
Me parece perfectamente ejecutado.
Rig SF Mozart isn't considered "Early Music" (Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque), it's pure Classical Music (from the Classical period) and doesn't have so much ornamentation as the Baroque (where singers where supposed to add their own unwritten ornaments to the A' parts of the A-B-A' arias). Mozart has much coloratura in many arias, but it's almost always written. "Voi che sapete" isn't supposed to have ornaments, and if you listen to other versions you'll see they don't add them either. As to the tempo, yes, I agree it's bit too slow, I prefer it a bit faster (not much, though... Cherubino already has a fast aria "Non so piú", and there needs to be a difference in the mood of both arias).
Cor Cordis Cor, I know Mozart isn't considered early music, what I meant by my remark is that Ms. Lezhneva sings early music, and I guess, up to Rossini. So she or her coach should know that yes, you do add ornamentation to Mozart. Both vocal and instrumental. In fact, I've even heard ornamentation added to early Verdi operas. I've heard Mozart at the San Francisco Opera, Vienna State Opera, NYCO among others and they ornament. You are right, it's a different and certainly not as elaborate ornamentation than you would hear in baroque or even earlier music but you do hear it. If you listen to some Mozart recordings, conducted by conductors such as Mackerras, Harnoncourt you will hear the way they ornament Mozart's music.
Cor Cordis Listen to the recorded versions of Figaro conducted by Mackerras, Harnoncourt, or if you really want an earful, listen to the version sung by Magdalena Kozena, conducted by Rattle (it's on TH-cam). As you probably know, most ornamentation was left up to the singers, not the composer of the piece. In this instance, however, the ornamentation is by one, Domenico Corri and believe me, it's WAY over the top. Even for me, who generally thinks music of this period should be ornamented, this version is too much. Have fun listening.
Rig SF Just been listening to the versions you suggested. Found Mackerras conducting the Scottish Chamber Orchestra (the name of the soloist isn’t mentioned) but, apart from a couple of “appoggiatura” I can’t hear any ornamentation (what I mean by ornamentation, anyway. I know in Mozart the “appoggiatura” is often used). Also found Harnoncourt conducting Wiener Philharmoniker (Christine Schäffer as Cherubino) and can’t hear any ornamentation either (not even the “appoggiatura”); it’s a very free performance of the aria tempo-wise, that's for sure (too free in my opinion for being Mozart… sounds more like a romantic aria, she even does some “rubato” at times). I did find Rattle’s one with Kozena as well and yes, for the first time in my life I heard what I call “ornamentation” in the “Voi che sapete” aria. Interesting as an experiment and as a singing exercise for the talented Kozena to show her skills, but I still think it’s not appropriate for Mozart… it even adds the ornamentation during the first verse (part A), not allowing the listener to understand what the basic melody is. Seems more like "variations on a theme" kind of composition by this D. Corri. I agree with you, it’s too much. On a funny note, even Bartoli (who is the "Queen of ornamentation") sings "Voi che sapete" without any ornamentation whatsoever, must be for a reason! :-) Anyway, I appreciate your suggestions, and thank you for them. I think we won’t agree about ornamentation in Mozart, but it’s ok to disagree when both parts have their own right reasons to have their own opinion. My favourite Cherubino is that by Tatiana Troyanos (Karl Böhm conducting Der Deutschen Oper Berlin). The aria is kept simple, but oh the emotion in that voice! Needs no ornamentation whatsoever. Mozart knew how to write wonderful melodies in their simplicity!

Do you know of any version of "Voi che sapete" with ornamentation? If you do, please let me know... I'd be curious to listen to it.
