I feel like 40k is popular because of the whole aspect of building and painting then playing the game. so you have stuff you can do and be involved with on your own, in the building and painting. Then you can have fun with friends playing with those models. So you have social and personal aspect when you don't have friends to play with. IMO

Agreed, and then that plus the IP is killer I mean the IP is what got me interested in 40k, the only other mini game I played was battletech

I was hooked reading a friend's White Dwarf in science class 1987.
Bought some lead blister packs( back when they had 3-4 figures) and a box of 30 plastic beakies...with the last stand of the Crimson Fists... on the boxtop. Great hobby, community.

Tabletop gaming is fun for me because it's a combination of a few things I love
    - Painting + building things
    - Gambling (pray to the dice gods)
    - Strategy and tactics

My favorite episode so far, the rules are important yes, but ultimately it is the person with whom you are playing with which is the most important aspect.
    For me the order is:
    Friends
    Minis
    Rules
    Stay fantastic!

Indomitis, Assault Intercessors, Bladeguard Veterans, the new Chaplains, they all screaming Black Templars!! The Lt. with the Power Sword is almost a perfect Primaris version of the Emperors Champion. Heck, the Chaplain on Bike even has some chains around his book, that is so Black Templars!!

It's fun to me mostly because of Customization. When I play video games, the experience isn't worth it if I can't customize my character. The tabletop is that, except infinitely greater. I can clip off a space marines arm and just say it got blown off and nothing would change.
The setting as well keeps me enthralled. Space marines are a uniquely 40k experience that I love to return to, even in video games without Customization.

Water Slide Decals advice from a model builder...
Gloss clear coat where the decal will go first.
Place the decal with water or setting solution. Dampen the surface first.
Once placed, absorb excess water/solution with the edge of a ripped paper towel.
Use a softening solution, applied carefully with a brush. This literally starts to dissolve the film, allowing it to REALLY form to the surface. This can be done multiple times (carefully) as the decal dries if needed.
Matte clear coat over the top after all is dry.

I'm a penny pinching person but Warhammer 40K is very special to me. Ive always said and thought that the reason why the little pieces of plastic are still worth it is because its an experience. What faction do I like? What of theirs looks cool? What strategy sounds fun? Then you get the minies and you're asking how will I pose and assemble them and what will the paint scheme and basing be? I think what truly makes them precious is that there's a piece of me in every one I build and paint.

X-wing is fun because you get to put yourself in the pilot seat and fly maneuvers all while imagining your in the Star Wars universe. Super epic for any Star Wars fan. X-wing was my first table top game and I love it, even 2nd edition. I think you will enjoy Star Wars Legions, same epic feel as X-wing when all your minis are painted and on the table battling! I still have yet to play 40K or AOS, but from what I have read of the rules so far, Star Wars Legions isn't that much different... anyway enough rambling, great video! Thanks for all your content. I think what makes a game is it's world and the flexibility of customization in that world. Star Wars, 40k, AoS, and Rangers of Shadowdeep have great rule sets, but it's more about the depth of the worlds they're in and the accessibility to create a custom narrative for your forces/characters. This freedom to create builds the engagement of the gamer and forms the community around it. Even non-miniatures games like Magic:the Gathering present creative opportunities in the form of custom formats and even custom art cards. While the mechanical parts of the cards must remain the same, many casual play groups allow and encourage artists to customize the art on the card.

Some games are better than others but what it really boils down to is who you are playing with. There are some people that I could play Monopoly with and have a great time- there are other people who find ways to ruin games by being overly competitive, paying more attention to their phone, or generally being "that guy". Good games are nice, but good friends are what makes the experience special.

I can't really hold you accountable to painting all of Indomitus. I bought it when it came out, so that a friend of mine and I could start playing. With everything that happened last year, I haven't really done much with it yet. So I'm basically just buying up models at the moment in hopes of some day getting to play something. Good thing I enjoy building and painting. I just picked up my copy of Dominion, and I have decided that orks will be my army of choice in 40k after reading and watching videos about them, so I have an ork start collecting box with some gretchin, and meganobz. So I have no room to say anything as I just Jumped in. On a side note I'm trying to get some people locally into the games by getting a paint group going. Then we can all learn, play, and paint using my models so if they decide it's not for them. I'm the only one with more than time invested.

I've heard that Monopoly was never meant to be good, it was meant to cause arguments and highlight the flaws in capitalism.. which is kind of weird it's so successful. Everybody knows it takes forever to play and causes arguments, but it's one of the most popular board games ever made.
And I remember GW in the UK whenever you'd go to a store they were always playing games, having painting evenings, getting people jazzed about it all, involved in the world. So you're probably right about the social aspect. It's like playing pool.. how much do most people care about the game? Most people just hit the balls and sometimes they go in the holes.

I partially agree that the fun is more on the players... but some games are awfully tedious. I played a couple of turns of Squad Leader (VERY detailed WWII game) with a high school friend... we both liked war games, we both liked combat, we both gave up. It was mind numbing.
I think many of us will allow some leeway for bad rules if the game is "inspirational" in some way. Star Wars is a good example - so much lore and emotional investment you're bound to like it if you like the background. Same with WH40K. They still need to be functional, but can get away with a bit of silliness in the nuts and bolts.

Agree on the rules things. Marketing is a big part of it. But there's also a cascade effect that impacts popularity. If someone very influential gets into something and promotes it enthusiastically, it can make a game. I think Privateer Press makes some great rules for games but the models aren't my favorite to paint and their marketing is awful so their games don't do as well as they ought to.

I disagree, if the game isn't fun then it won't being a classic, maybe that's why there are no classic wargames, because the new generation of wargamers just care about theme.
Having fun because you enjoy the silly company of your friends does not accurately reflect how much fun you're having. Try playing monopoly with strangers and see how much silly fun your gonna have!!!!!

Jay, I'm a gamer of the first-order. GW makes shitty games, mate. Any game that is based on an IGO-UGO system is seriously compromised. I really wish you focused more on other companies and other games. GW makes fine models, but between bad rules and bad business practices, the focus on this one company actually does the hobby harm.

I wonder how alternat activation works out for large amounts of models? I have tried to play large games of X-wing and keeping track of initiative can become challenging.
