  • One of the few interviews Barbra gave to promote her film Nuts, in 1987. She was alone for the first part and later with co-star Richard Dreyfuss.

I think she should have at least been nominated for the Oscar for that performance. It was brilliant!!!

I think the main aspect of Barbra's personality. abilities, talent, etc. that is often overlooked is that, despite her often intense, serious, almost professorial attention to detail and truth, she is a very funny person and can so easily be funny and make people laugh in her movies and in real life. And, again, in addition to her serious side, she really enjoys a good laugh.

Brolin says she has the most wonderful laugh. I totally agree. And voice. And profile. And personality. And moves.

I've always thought that Nuts was an underrated movie. Barbra's acting was top notch. This was a very creative time in her career just before work on Yentl.
I know this next comment may be superficial but I can't help noting how much Barbra's hair changes. I like this wild longish mane with loose wavy curls look coming out of her permed short hair look of A Star is Born look. I wish someone would do a video that documents Barbra's hair through the years.

What I remember most of these interviews (i think I remember getting up at the crack of dawn 3 different times to turn on the VCR when her segments came on) was her lion's main hair, her telling Gene she's an old broad now, and the ferkakta electric bath tub the tabloids said she had, but she didn't and thought she'd get electrocuted in! Haha! And these three memories have stuck with me ever since I first saw these in 1987. I haven't watched it here yet. (And I will!) But those 3 mem'ries I've never forgotten for 33 years now! Funny, I don't remember much what Richard said. LOL! Thanks Gustavo for getting these interviews out again. Mine are tucked away somewhere.... someday, somehow I'll get to them again. 🤪

Ms. Streisand kindly wrote me a referral for an American Film Institute grant and agreed to join the Bosrd of the Women`s Film Educational Project an archive I began when devising seminal gender in film courses at USC in the Seventies. The idea was to create an archive dedicated to women who work behind the camera.

Shalit did the best interviews with Streisand ever. She liked him and she trusted that he wasn't going to try and ambush her with "gotcha" questions, as "serious" journalists like Mike Wallace famously did. Consequently, she's relaxed and infinitely more open and forthcoming with Shalit, as opposed to defensive and cautious with Wallace. Also, Shalit didn't just go to the clippings files and ask the same boring questions she's been asked a gazillion times - and still gets asked after 50 years. No wonder she looks bored even at the start of many interviews; she knows she's in for another string of cliches.

She is so precious. The fixing of Gene's bow tie. Endearing. Taking Dreyfuss' taunting in stride...down to Earth. I need to find a nice cute girl from Brooklyn. That may possess just the smallest fraction of Barbra's qualities. A no-nonsense, intelligent, modest, funny and quirky sweetheart. Could also hum a tune would be nice....

I remember when I was working NBC (my first job) there was a producer a Greek man named I think George Voustitous (something like that). It was my first job. I was PA to Len Probst and Peter Flynn on the `Emphasis` live radio show. Barbara Walters was one of our 5 weekly presenters. I recall he said to me once `You are just like JOAN CRAWFORD`. At the time I thought he was Nuts. Nuts because it was 1967 and I was (I thought) carefree and modern. Crawford was some old witch from the Forties. A few years later I wrote `Down With Myth AMerica` are reference Crawford as a `careerist` one of the 4 antifeminist stereotypes that keeps repeating. Fast Forward 1972 I invited Crawford to the class I had devised and was teaching NYU on gender in film. She agreed to come. So everything comes full circle.

I can see why Barbra was sensitive to interviews. The two guys discussing why she was thought to be difficult, must not have been too easy for her, in this interview. Yes, if she were a guy, that wouldn't even been discussed!! Makes me mad too being a woman. And basically, this interview was based a lot on that question. Richard Dreyfus in the end, was kind of making fun of her....anyway, it must be very difficult in general to hear that critique over and over. On the flip side, she gets a lot of accolades for her work because she is so good at whatever she does...She really is a great role model for young women, even now in 2023.....women, be who you are!!

Nuts is an outstanding movie, its one of my favorites. Have it on dvd. Barbra's performance is phenomenal. I can relate so much to her though as i feel misunderstood and im a male. Very opinionated, speak my mind. I feel if you dont, people treat you like dirt. But also if you do speak your mind, people don't want to hear that either. But its ok for others.. Barbra is not like everyone else and the same with me. We are unique.

Streisand was great in nuts, but the movie had no commercial appeal. Those flash back scenes were effective (which we will see more of in the The Prince of Tides). But they were ever so brief and the movie hence was too static, mostly indoors in full settings like the court room and hospital . Sure, TOP rate cast, performances but held no appeal to the general movie goer.

I love Streisand, don't get me wrong at one time I thought she could walk on water LOL but a lot of times in her movies ( especially from the eighties on...) she undercuts her performance by preaching to the audience. Nuts was a great movie until the very end where she gets on her preachers box and underlines the point of the movie in case we didn't get it. She does this also in Prince of tides, and the mirror has two faces. I feel like screaming at the screen OK Barbra we get it. It feels like she talking down to the ignorant masses and ends up destroying what was a powerful movie.
